Jolt

When I was little, I wrote a story about a race of humanoids who lived underground. They could shoot electricity from their fingertips. They built up an electric charge within their bodies, and if they didn't discharge it, they experienced pain. So they would go off to isolated areas to discharge in private, where they wouldn't harm anyone. One of them was named Jolt. His father was the king. Jolt was a peaceful guy and they all lived harmoniously.

And that was it. I showed my mom the story, and she said it was nice, but "nothing is happening here. There's no story."

I recall my thought process when I wrote that story so long ago. I was a very conflict-avoidant kid. In my head, I imagined a world where parents didn't argue and shout all the time, where sisters didn't get spanked for something they didn't do, and where I lived with confidence instead of cowering in my room. So I wrote about Jolt and his nice family where nothing bad ever happened.

But without conflict, you have no story. I learned this that day. And today, I know that all those unfond memories make me who I am now. That is my story. And without it, I might have turned out to be a pretty boring person.

What about you? What kind of weird stories did you write as a child?
