He says that he the King made a bet with Laertes.

The gentelman leaves and Hamlet tells Horatio that he'll win.
Everything is ready.
The King puts Laertes' hand in Hamlet's hand, and Hamlet apologises for his action, saying that it was his madness' fault.
Laertes accepts his apologies, but still wants to duel for his honor.
Hamlet is fine with it, and Osric gives them the swords and they get ready.
Some servants with flagons of wine arrive, and they begin.
Hamlet hits Laertes twice.
The Queen drinks the wine from the poisoned cup and offers it to Hamlet without knowing that it is poisoned.
Hamlet refuses the cup, too focused on the duel.
