Act 1: Scene 2

Claudius King of Denmark spends a few words for the dead brother and talks a bit of his marriage with the Queen Gertrude, thanking everybody for their advice.

Then he talks about the problem they have with Fortinbras that plans to attack them now that their last King is dead.

He says that they are going to inform Fortinbras' uncle, the King of Norway, of Fortinbras plan, and they'll ask him to stop his nephew.

He then sends Voltemand and Cornelius to bring their request to the King.

As the two go away, the King asks Laertes what he wanted to ask, and Laertes answers that he wants to go back to France.

The King agrees to let him go, and then the Queen scolds Hamlet and tells him to stop acting like he is the only one to suffer.

The King reminds Hamlet that everyone loses their father, but that is wrong to behave like this, so he asks him to stop being so sad, and to not leave them to go back to Wittenberg.

The Queen also asks him to not go.

Hamlet decides to obey.

Everyone goes away but Hamlet, which starts talking to himself, saying that he hates that, after only two months from his father death, his mother has already remarried to his uncle.

Then Horatio, Marcellus and Barnardo arrive.

They greet the prince and they tell him about the ghost of the late King.

Hamlet decides to go to the platform where the ghost appeared, hoping it'll come back.

The three sentinels leave.

Hamlet promises himself to figure out what's going on.
