The Haunted Neighborhood: Behind The Mask-Cracked Sky
James and Candy stand outside the door, dressed all in black.
"Are you sure about this?" James asks with a sigh.
"It's the only time of year that we don't have to hide. It'll be fun." Candy says optimistically. He doesn't understand how she can be so cavalier about the this.
James sighs again and closes his eyes, allowing them to drain of their cognac color, and allowing his canines to extend into fangs. He can literally feel the color evaporate from his skin as he becomes the one thing he hates the most.
"Feel better?" Candy asks, amused.
"No. Not really." He says disappointedly.
"Me neither. But we are what we are now. We can't go back." Candy says, tilting her head back and allowing her own face to contort into its undead form. She steps forward and knocks on the door, to which their neighbor, Carla, opens it.
"Hey guys, great costumes!" She exclaims. "Why don't you come in?" Once she says those words, the physical barrier against them opens, and James and Candy enter. They're quickly greeted by Carla's husband, Josh.
"James, Candy!" He says, hugging James and kissing Candy's cheek.
"I love those costumes. Vampires are actually one of my primary areas of interest." He informs, adjusting the plastic sword atop his head.
"Really? How so?" Candy asks, tapping James' shoulder. Since the pair had been turned against their will, she had tried so hard to find a brighter side for James to look at.
"Well, what's more fascinating than an undead soul being condemned for all eternity?" Says Josh with a chuckle.
James' half-smile drops and Candy wraps her arms around him. Josh quickly senses the shift in mood.
"What's wrong? What'd I say?" He asks, looking between them.
