Deep Space Horror-Jack And Stephanie

Why Commander Jack Dempsey volunteered for a solo expedition through space, he'll never know. Maybe he thought he could do it. After all, he'd been on his fair share of expeditions with his colleagues, how hard could it be?

Well, it's hard. He had been steadily going stir-crazy for the last two days and still had another to go. Tethered down and zipped into his sleeping bag for the night, he reclined his head against the wall, his only cushion the back of the bag.

Ground control had a funny way of waking him with Kenny Loggins' Highway To The Danger Zone, so his routine consisted of squeezing his eyes shut and hoping for sleep until he heard that music again. All had been silent in the cabin as he slowed his breathing and waited.

                                  "Revvin' up your engine

                                    Listen to your howlin' roar

                                    Metal under tension

Beggin' you to touch and go."

The sound of the radio coming to life jerked Jack out of his light slumber. Was it time to get up already? He removed the straps from his arms and stumbled out of his sleeping bag, making his way to the front.

"Ground control, hello?" He asked, but the only sound on the radio had been some sort of interference.

"Commander Jack to Ground Control, hello?"

                                    "Headin' into twilight

                                      Spreadin' out her wings tonight

She got you jumpin' off the deck

                                      And shovin' into overdrive."

The music came blasting through the radio once again, this time with a female voice singing along. Except the female voice sounded so much louder...

Jack whipped around and there was a face he hadn't seen in years. Sitting cross-legged on the floor was his old girlfriend, Stephanie. She had been picking at her chocolate brown locks and singing along, even after the radio had again cut out.

"Stephanie?" Jack asked, his voice crackling a little. He didn't understand. She had died in high school. He knew for a fact. He'd accidentally killed her.

"Jack!" She greeted with a smile, standing up and crossing over to him. Stephanie threw her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek.

"You-you should not be here. You were dead. I must finally be losing it." He rambled.

"I'm still dead." She said nonchalantly. "Remember? You were the one driving."

                                   "I never forgot. I couldn't." Jack rationalized.

"But why, how are you here?"

"'Cause I'm a spirit." She explained with a shrug.

"Okay, next question. Why are you here?"

"Because I'm going to take you."

"T-take me? Where?" Jack struggled to ask.

"To Heaven, with me." Stephanie replied with a smile.

                                    "But I'm not dead."

"Jack," Stephanie whispered. "Your circuit board's dead."

His heart plummeted as he looked over at the board, where several light-up buttons had gone dark, and the radio returned to crackling. Stephanie put her arms around him, and Jack laid his head on her chest, accepting his fate.
