Chapter 46

(Y/N POV)

I know you.

"So what's the deal with Nina?"

I knew I shouldn't be asking, but since the topic of our past was brought up, I wanted to know some questions I had been holding in.

"Nina?" he repeated, "oh."

"Go on."

"I actually don't know what happened to her. I broke off our friendship a few years after the incident, and she moved to Mexico or something."

"Wow. thrilling."

"I guess you were expecting something more climactic?" he asked, chuckling, "karma didn't really take its toll on that one."

"That sucks, honestly. She messed up a lot."

"Well.... I did too."

"Darn right."

I smirked, and tapped the dashboard with my fingers. Shawn Mendes was playing on the radio, so I wasn't complaining about the music choice.

Aidan and I drove a little longer, and I started to notice the trees were starting to disappear. We must have been going to an urban-style place, since the forestation was clearing away.

"We should be there in a few feet," he said, glancing at his Waze app. He had the destination anonymous, so I couldn't figure out where we were. I noticed some cars pull into a small driveway park, and Aidan started to pull in after them.

Guess we were all going the same place.

We kept driving until we reached a clearing in the woods. A huge screen was set up at the far back, cars were already pulling up in front of it. As he slowly drove to get a spot, I noticed popcorn stands lined up a few cars down.

"Holy crap," I mumbled, "is this a drive in movie?"

"Yeah. just like in the 50's."

"Woah. I'm not disappointed now."

He smiled happily as he pulled the key out of the ignition, the car thudding to a stop.

"I'm glad you like it," he said, "do you want some popcorn?"

"Of course, but one problem."

"Yeah?"

"You parked the car backwards," I pointed out, "we're facing the wrong way."

I expected him to look surprised and turn the car around, but he shrugged and hopped out of the car to grab the popcorn. I couldn't tell if this boy was stupid or not.

As I was waiting for him to come back, I felt my phone buzz in my pocket, and I pulled it out to check what was going on.

Amelia

Hey

A wave of confusion and doubt washed over me, and I swiped to clear the notifications. I shook my head in distaste, disappointed in my step-sister.

In the span of seven years, she never sent me a text. Now that the article has been published and more people know about Aidan and my friendship, she thinks she can mooch off of that?

There was the possibility that she didn't know and had just decided to say hi, but that seemed to be impossible. The circumstances were too strange for that.

"Hey, you look stressed."

I turned to see Aidan standing outside of the car with two bags of popcorn in his hand. I smiled weakly, and popped open the door to let him in.

"Yeah, but don't worry about it," I said.

"Are you sure?"

"The only thing you should be worried about is the fact that we are still parked backwards."

He smirked, and ran a hand through his wavy brown hair. This boy was up to something, and I was slightly excited to figure out what he was hiding.

"The truth is," he said slyly, "we aren't."

"Excuse me?"

"Get out of the car."

"Okay, that was commanding."

He chuckled, and waited till I rolled my way out of the passenger seat. I motioned for me to head towards the trunk, and I watched as he popped it open with his free hand.

Inside the car, the back seats had been put away and he had a whole camp set out. Blankets and pillows were arranged in an aesthetic pattern, and a whole picnic basket was tucked in the back.

"Woah, this is-"

"Wait that's not all," he said, grabbing a remote out of his pocket.

He hit a couple buttons, and suddenly a string of yellow light bulbs lit up the trunk. This was probably the most adorable and kind thing anyone had ever done for me.

"Took me an hour to set up," he said, "do you like it?"

"I love it. It's unbelievable."

"Go ahead, hop in."

He held out his hand, and hoisted me up into the car's rear. I plopped down on a light blue pillow and let out a relaxing sigh. This was amazing. We had a clear view of the movie screen from where we were, and the smell of the freshly made popcorn was heavenly.

"What movie is this, again?" I asked.

Aidan bit his lip excitedly, and he shuffled around his pocket for two tickets. Handing one of them to me, I read the title:

13 Going on 30

"Just like the old days," he whispered, grabbing my hand.

I didn't let go.
