Chapter 12: The Assassin
I stared at Astrid's grave in horror. Who would do something like this?
I knelt down in front of her tombstone beside Hiccup, rubbing my hand gently against the cold stone.
"I'm so sorry." I whispered both to Hiccup and to Astrid.
Hiccup shook his head in despair. "There's nothing I can do about it... She's gone."
"No she isn't. No matter what, man, she's always with ya." Jack reassured, patting him on the back.
I smiled at him sympathetically.
"Thanks." Hiccup mumbled, getting up from the grass.
"Hiccup?"
"Yeah?"
"You said there was a kingdom close by from Berk?" I asked carefully.
He nodded.
"And someone from there... You know.." My eyes darted between him and the grave.
He nodded briskly.
"Do you know who?"
Hiccup hesitated. "She's like an assassin, they say. She always works at night with a pack of bears as her defense. Her ability to shoot arrows is incredible. The farthest she shot was from 3 miles away."
"Can you describe her?"
He took a deep breath and nodded. "Long red curly hair. A Scottish accent. Not like us vikings though. She has a long bow with carvings on its side, her arrows sharp and ready to kill. And she always where's a black hood."
"What's her—" I paused when Jack placed a hand on my shoulder. I looked up at him and I already knew he wanted me to stop talking. I glanced at Hiccup and understood why. He was shaking bad.
"I'm sorry Hiccup." I started. "I just want to help you and your village..."
He forced a smile and stopped shaking. "Its okay, I want to stop them too, but its impossible."
"How?" Jack asked. "You got like thousands of dragons and what does that kingdom have? Bears."
"Its not like that." Hiccup said. "They always attack on a full moon."
"And?"
Hiccup scratched the back of his head. "And, on a full moon our dragons are powerless. Yeah that sounds crazy, but they are. Somehow the assassin... She curses our dragons with some sort of spell."
"So that's how she always got away with her raids from your village." I said half to myself.
Hiccup sighed in response. "She's impossible to beat."
"She only curses dragons right?" Jack asked.
"Yeah why?"
Well then that means my powers won't be cursed, same goes with Jack.
"Because." I answered. "You got some weapons with powers on your side."
"Who?"
"Us." Jack and I said at the same time.
We both formed a snowball in our hands showing them to Hiccup.
He gaped at our powers.
I laughed. "I was born with them."
"And I earned them." Jack said proudly.
Hiccup chuckled. "You guys are awesome. But you don't have to help, you should get back to your kingdom."
"And leave you to deal with an assassin and bears?" Jack scoffed. "I don't think so."
"We're all in this together." I said confidently.
Hiccup sighed in relief. "Thanks."
"Anytime." I smiled.
Whoever this threat is, they better be sorry once they meet our powers. Never again will someone die because of this. Not when I still have breath in my body.
I brushed my blonde braided to the side.
You all better get ready, because new powers has come to Berk.
