Author’s POV
Jae-yong opened the door to let his colleague enter the restaurant, then led her to the seat he had reserved a day earlier.
“I’m so amazed by your taste in restaurants, Jae-yong,” Sohee remarked as she looked around, clearly impressed by the surroundings.
“I’m glad you appreciate it, dear,” he replied, grabbing the menu from the table.
“Oh, stop talking so formally, Jae-yongie,” she pouted slightly, her playful tone contrasting the formalities of their earlier conversation. “It’s just the two of us now. We can talk casually and comfortably, right?” She placed her hand over his on the table.
“Let’s order!” Jae-yong exclaimed, gently pulling his hand away. “What do you want to order, Sohee?”
Sohee’s expression shifted slightly. She murmured her order, her voice tinged with sadness. They then continued to chat about their day and the cases they encountered during work, all while enjoying their meal.
Meanwhile, Namjoon was busy stifling his laughter, unable to get enough of hearing about his best friend’s chaotic daily workplace conflicts.
“The worst thing is, that damn printer works perfectly for everyone else. But guess what?” Sohee continued, now visibly frustrated, cutting into her steak with more force than necessary. “The only problem head is me! What is wrong with me?” She threw a dramatic glance at her companion.
Namjoon, still laughing, held his side. “I’m sure you did something wrong or messed with that poor machine,” he teased.
This earned him a cold stare. “Are you even on my side right now?”
But Namjoon couldn’t care less, chuckling loudly. “Of course, I’m not!”
“Ha-ha, I’m just trying to find something funny in my chaotic days,” she said, sipping her glass of soju. “Guess what? Let me laugh, and tell me about your calm, peaceful life, Kim Namjoon.”
“Well, I recently got a new job,” he replied, his voice dropping to a serious tone.
“And your bookstore?” Sohee asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I sold it,” he replied simply.
“Really? So, where is this new job?” Sohee asked, already popping the last piece of steak that Namjoon had cut for her into her mouth.
“In your company. We’ll be working under the same roof from now on, Ms. Jeon,” he said calmly, finishing his whisky. “Aren’t you excited?”
“Not really,” she teased in return. “Which department?”
“Surprise!” Namjoon teased, reaching for his coat from the back of his chair and preparing to leave.
“Oh, come on, Nam. Tell me!” Sohee whined, gripping his hand. “Jeballllll…”
“It won’t be a surprise if I tell you, darling,” he said in a low voice, pinching her cheek affectionately.
“Who gives a damn about surprises? And stop pinching! It hurts!” she complained, rubbing her cheek.
“Well, I do,” he replied with a wink, before turning towards the door. “I’ll see you tomorrow at work, dear colleague.”
“Ah! Namjoon, I’m the man to—” Both of them froze when Saera unintentionally blurted out her words. “Sorry…” she mumbled, feeling embarrassed. “I’m sorry, Nam. It just slipped out—”
“It’s okay. Bye!” He cut her off with a smile and waved.
“Bye!” she said softly, waving at her retreating best friend.
Namjoon waved back, then turned to leave but accidentally bumped into someone.
“Sorry, sorry…” A girl whispered, looking down in embarrassment.
He bowed apologetically but received no acknowledgment as the small figure quickly ran away.
“Don’t break people, Kim Namjoon!” Saera teased from behind him.
“I’ll try!” he called back, before exiting the restaurant.
Saera watched his figure disappear, feeling a twinge of sorrow. She had unintentionally reminded him of painful memories. As she was about to leave, she heard faint sobs coming from a corner. Curious, she followed the sound and found a young girl sitting alone, crying uncontrollably.
“J-jogiyo, are you okay?” Saera asked softly, bending down to the girl’s level.
“N-nee, I’m f-fine… It’s just t-that I got rejected by the person I loved for so long,” the girl mumbled, wiping away her tears.
Saera felt a pang of recognition. She had been in this exact situation a couple of years ago. But at least she hadn’t cried over it.
She hadn’t cried in a long time.
Saera sat beside the girl, gazing up at the sky before speaking gently, “I totally understand what you’re going through. I’ve been in that situation before.” She paused, giving the girl a reassuring smile. “But in my opinion, no one deserves your tears. Time is the best healer.”
The girl looked up at Saera, her eyes beginning to sparkle with gratitude. Saera stood up, offering her hand to help the girl to her feet.
“You’re more precious than you think, dear, and so are your tears,” Saera added warmly.
The girl nodded, wiping her tears away with a newfound determination. “Thank you, I’ll cherish them.”
Saera smiled and waved before heading toward the bus station.
“Ah, can I know your name, please?” the girl called out behind her.
“Saera. Nice to meet you,” she replied with a gentle smile.
“I’m Sohee. Hope we’ll meet again,” the girl said, her voice filled with hope.
“Me too, Soheessi.”
Sohee watched Saera disappear from sight, the older woman’s words echoing in her mind.
“She's right. After all, he’s not the only man in the world, right? I’ll find someone who’ll love me as I deserve,” Sohee thought, her heart lightening as she walked back home.
*****
“Nayeon, can we talk, please?”
“I thought you wanted me to fucking leave you alone?” Nayeon replied dryly, her tone uninviting.
Saera stood in front of her colleague’s desk, trying to make amends for her earlier outburst. Not that she believed her words were wrong, but the way she had said them was.
“Look, I was really annoyed that day, but that’s no excuse for the way I spoke to you. I’m sorry.”
“No need to explain. I understood perfectly well that I’m a source of annoyance to you. You can go back to your desk now,” Nayeon responded coldly.
Despite the chilly reception, Saera couldn’t help but feel that Nayeon deserved a second chance. After all, she was the first person who had tried to befriend her. They were, in a way, friends.
“I’m really sorry, Nayeon. Please, forgive me.”
“When someone admits they’re wrong and asks for forgiveness, you should forgive them, Nayeonssi.” They both turned to the source of the voice.
“That’s just my opinion, nothing mandatory,” Taehyung added with a smile. “Saera, come to my office when you’re done, of course.”
“Yeah, sure.” Saera nodded, giving a polite acknowledgment to her colleague before turning back to Nayeon.
“Go fulfill your duties, Ms. Jeon,” Nayeon said with a firm tone, rising from her desk.
“I have a boyfriend!” Saera suddenly declared loudly, ensuring that everyone in the room heard her.
This was the one thing that could grab Nayeon’s attention and break the ice between them.
“What?! No way! What’s his name?” Nayeon’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Ah, Namjoon. K-Kim Namjoon,” Saera mumbled his name, the only one that came to her mind.
“Pardon?”
“Ah! He’s here. Saera, this is the new model we were waiting for. Kim Namjoon.”
“Your boyfriend is a fucking model, Saera?!” Nayeon exclaimed.
Well, I didn’t know either, Saera thought to herself, her mouth dropping in shock.
