If you're confused on the story, basically the main girl is the messiah and she and her friends travels to the tower to stop impending doom on the world. Upon arrival, her friends stole the nine blessings from her and when she reached the alter, she found out the blessings were actually curses/punishments. Her friends knew and couldn't let her suffer through them so they took her place that's why they acted greedy. To save the world from dying, there has to be nine sacrifices and the shadow you saw at the alter was the previous messiah. There was a theory that the new nine sacrifices and messiah freed the previous messiah and her friends who were suffering from the punishments.
Which means the current messiah's friends will suffer the punishments. There was also another theory that there was a tenth punishment and that was loneliness/heartbreak/sadness, which is what the messiah suffers.
