Chapter 14 - Rescued From Nothing
=Lucas' POV=
I tied the vine around my foot and the other end around a block I had placed down, then broke a block in the roof. Rainbow and Nightmare launched into battle as I lowered myself down to Sabre.
Of course I wanted to fight and have Rainbow Steve rescue Sabre, but the steve had insisted on the reverse. I took out my pickaxe and pried the bars open. "Psst! Sabre!" I whisper-shouted, offering Sabre my hand.
He took it and I pulled him out, helping him onto the vine and climbing up after him. Once we were on the rooftop Sabre glared at me.
"Why is Rainbow fighting!?" He hissed.
"He insisted!" I replied.
"And you just let him!?"
"What else was I supposed to do!?"
"I dunno, force your way?" I slapped him after he said that. "Not even a thank-you? so ungrateful!"
"Okay," Sabre gave in, "I deserved that. Thanks, Lucas." He rubbed his cheek. I nodded. "Come on." Sabre followed me off the roof to the entrance of the castle. "RAINBOW STEVE!" I yelled, "COME ON!"
Rainbow took one more swing at the Nightmare King before bailing. Except Rainbow Steve didn't make it.
Sabre and I both screamed as Dark Steve appeared behind him, stabbing him in the back. It all seemed to happen in slow motion as Rainbow collapsed, Dark Steve's soul disappearing as he possed our friend once again.
I ran forward, my pickaxe colliding with Nightmare's face as Sabre took Rainbow Steve, rushing him back to the Rainbow Town. I saw something out of the corner of my eye, but before I could do anything, the figure lunged.
But not for me.
"RUN, LUCAS!" Shadow Steve shouted as he held Nightmare back. I scrammed immediately. Wait. Why would Shadow Steve help me!? Wasn't he a bad guy? And wasn't he dead?
I shook it off as I got it to the Rainbow Town. Sabre was already done bandaging Rainbow Steve as I walked in. Rainbow as barely awake as Sabre was helping him drink some water and putting ice packs on his wound.
Sabre was crying and muttering something along the lines of, "I'm sorry," "you'll be okay," and "not again..." over and over. All three of us were soaking wet. "Sabre," I said. He looked up at me, sniffling and shaking.
"Go get some sleep. I'll take care of Rainbow." I ordered. Sabre reluctantly got up and pet Rainbow Steve's head, then hugged me and went to his room. I sat next to Rainbow's head, petting him softly.
"You know you'll be okay, right Rainbow Steve?" I asked. He shook his head. "No? and why is that?" Rainbow took a shaky breath. "I-I have a f-feeling that something r-r-really b-bad is going to happen..." he stuttered
I got that on the floor to Rainbow's eye level. "Hey, I promise I won't let anything bad happen to you from now on, okay? I tilted my head to the left so I could match his head position.
Rainbow let out a little laugh. "Okay, Lucas..." he said before falling asleep. I smiled and sat on the chair next to the couch, just before passing out myself.
=Sabres POV=
My hand shot up, grabbing someone's wrist. I opened my eyes and got up, pushing Rainbow to a wall. "And just what do you think you're doing?" I asked. Rainbow growled at me, struggling against my grip.
"Now, Dark Steve," I said, "you chose a weak body with a strong consciousness. That just plays against you."
Dark Steve simply laughed from inside Rainbow's body. "I chose the body that would make you weak." he then punched me in the chest, sending me flying across the room.
"Now, Sabre," he said mockingly, "either you can fight me, or you can save little Lucas. He doesn't have much time left~"
My eyes widened. "WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM!?!" I screamed. He shrugged. "Y'know, the usual. Stabbed him through his heart and such." Dark Steve made a stabbing motion.
I got up and pushed him over, barreling down the stairs to Lucas leaning against the wall, pressing bandages to his chest. "F-fight h-him..." Lucas managed to get out.
My expression hardened and I nodded. "I'LL FIGHT!" I yelled.
Suddenly the scenery around me changed. Dark Steve stand in front of me, possessing my friend's body. And this time, he wasn't letting go that easily.
I scanned my surroundings, pulling a Rainbow Dagger out. we were on a hill with a flat top, perfect for a battle. I looked behind me and just barely made out the Rainbow Tree of Life, and I could only see it because of the tree's bright glow at night.
I whipped my head back to Dark Steve as he began to harness Rainbow's powers, starting to float in the air, lighting going off the two of us.
"Holy cheese..." I squeaked.
