Chapter Five: Tests
I woke up in yet another room. Still white. Still alone. Still small. Ish. It's bigger than the other room I was in, but still rather small. Maybe a medium sized room. I looked around. There was nothing in here but the bed in which I sat, and me. A door opened in the wall to my left and I froze as the guard walked in. It was the guard that had call those horrible doctors to do that 'surgery' if it could be called that, on Percy.
"Hello, Ms. Chase. How are you?" I stared at him. "My name is Dr. Roberts. I'm your doctor and the person that will be administering all your tests. I'll also be your guard. Though any of this might change in the future. I'm not the one in charge. Dr. Montoya and Dr. Ivy are. They are Mr. Jackson's doctors."
Dr. Montoya? Dr. Ivy? My gym teacher and my history teacher are evil scientists-doctors who kidnapped my friends, my boyfriend and me? What!?
"You mean... My gym teacher? And my history teacher? They're crazy people who kidnap and experiment on kids?" I asked, incredulous.
Dr. Roberts laughed. "Even worse, they're crazy government people who know about the existence of the Greek gods and want to kidnap and experiment on their demigod children." Oh no. Oh no. Oh shit! They can't know that the gods are real. They probably think they know, but are only waiting for one of us to slip up and confirm it.
"The Greek gods are real!? Really? Are you okay? Or are you all just worshiping a dead religion? My friends and I aren't demigods! What would that be like anyway? Would we have cool powers and the ability to appear and disappear?" I asked, making a joke out of it. "Maybe you all really are crazy. Just, not the crazy you think."
"I will get information out of you yet. And the others are going to get information out of your friends." Dr. Roberts snarled. "But for now," he looked at his watch. "It's your social hour. You get to meet with all your friends!" He laughed and grabbed me roughly, yanking my arms behind my back and throwing my over his shoulder.
"Hey! Put me down! Let me go! Or I swear to God that I will beat your ass!" I screamed at him and fought as he carried me out of the room and down a hall to another hall. Then through that hall, and another hall, and another hall until we reached our destination. He threw open a door and tossed me into the room. I landed hard on my butt and jumped right back up onto my feet.
"Get back here you bastard! Get the hell back here so I can kick your sorry ass!" I screamed and pounded on the door when he closed it. "Shit!" I yelled and hit the door one more time before turning away. I saw all my friends staring at me. Thalia, Piper, Hazel, Jason, Frank, Nico, and Leo. I started to cry.
"Annabeth!" Thalia cried, running over to me and scooping me up in a big hug, letting me cry into her shoulder. Everyone was here except Percy. But what were they going to do to him? What were they doing to him right now? Where is he? Why is it always Percy? It's always Percy.
"Let me go! Where's Annabeth? What the hell have you done? What the fuck do you want? Let me go or I swear to God that I will hurt your sorry asses so bad that you will be begging for mercy! I will hurt you so bad that death would be a blessing! Do you hear me? If you've harmed a single hair on my friends' heads, I will become your worst fucking nightmare!" A raspy voice yelled from outside the door. I ripped myself away from Thalia's grip and threw myself at the door.
"Annabeth! Annabeth, stop!" Jason called to me. I stopped ramming my shoulder to the door and looked at him. I realized that Jason, Frank, Nico, and Leo were stuck on one side of a wall of glass that ran down the middle of the room. Thalia, Hazel, Piper, and I were stuck on this side.
"LET ME GO! WHERE THE HELL IS ANNABETH? DO YOU HEAR ME?! DO. YOU. HEAR ME!?" A voice roared right outside a door into the boy's side of the glass-separated room.
"Percy! Percy, I'm in here!" I called out to him, rushing over to the glass wall and pressing myself to it.
"Annabeth? Is that you?" Percy's quiet voice said, right outside the door.
"Yes, Percy! Yes, Percy, it's me!" I cried, hot tears sliding down my face.
"Annabeth! Are you okay? Did they hurt you?" He called in to me. To the guards that were undoubtedly holding him with much difficulty he said; "I SWEAR TO GOD, THAT IF YOU HURT HER I WILL KILL YOU! I WILL KILL YOU, DO YOU HEAR ME? I WILL KILL YOU!"
Percy's swears grew louder still as the door was thrown open. The guards staggered into the room trying in vain to keep their holds on a thrashing Percy. But now that Percy had seen us all, had heard my voice, he was uncontainable. He roared and ripped his arms from the guards' grasps. He whirled and punched one in the face so hard, I heard his nose break and blood gushed out immediately, splattering all over Percy's chest. He still had no shirt on. The other guard he punched in the gut. That guy doubled over and struggled to suck in even a single breath. Percy grabbed his head in his hands and brought his knee up to hit it hard into the doubled-over guard's forehead. The guard slumped over and was out cold on the floor.
Percy stared at the broken-nosed guard who watched with his back pressed against a wall, his eyes wide and terrified. Percy snarled and took a step toward him. He shrieked and ran to the side of the unconscious guard. Grabbing the other guard by the arms, he quickly tugged him out of the room and slammed the door shut. We all heard the click as it was locked.
"Percy..." I whispered, pressing my hand against the glass, trying to break through and get to him.
"Annabeth!" Percy whirled and stared at me. He ran over to the wall and smashed against it, trying to get through to me. I could tell that he was barely keeping his powers in check, barely stopping himself from causing an earthquake and bringing the wall down, or exploding the pipes and making mass confusion, or whatever it was that he could do to break the glass or get us all out of here.
I noticed that Jason, Frank, Nico, and Leo were all staring at Percy's back in horror. Thalia, Piper, and Hazel were staring at him too. But Percy either didn't notice, or didn't care. His eyes were all for me. They scanned me and looked me over for injuries.
"Annabeth, Annabeth, Annabeth," He whispered my name like a prayer, saying it over and over again. We stared at each other for gods-know-how-long, and the other demigods on each side of the glass were silent.
"Percy..." It was Thalia who finally broke the silence, her voice careful. "What... What happened to your face? How... How can you walk?" Percy tore his eyes from mine and stared at the daughter of Zeus, then looked around at the other faces that were staring at him in horror and fear. He sighed.
"Percy, do you want me to tell them?" I said quietly. He looked at me again and shook his head.
"No, I should." He said.
"If you ever want me to take up, just tell me. I'll do it no problem. I know how hard it was to watch, but you had it worse. It was done to you. Whatever you feel most comfortable with." I told him. He fitted his hand over the glass to match mine.
"It's alright, Annabeth. I'll tell them. You probably couldn't do it without breaking down into tears, and then I'd feel terrible because a) It's my fault you're telling the story b) It's my fault you have to tell the story at all and c) I can't be at your side to hold you and comfort you. I can't be there to wrap my arms around you and give you strength." He sighed again, then turned around, showing the girls on this side of the glass his back.
It was laced with metal, wires, and tubes. "Because of the serious burns I got from the fire," Percy began. "The 'scientists' decided, 'oh hey! Let's see if we can save this boy by giving him metal legs and a metal face!' When Annabeth had her panic attack and they brought me in, I was able to calm her down. We had this whole conversation, and she yelled at the guards to get me some water. They left and soon after, I guess I passed out."
"I freaked out. He wouldn't wake up, and he didn't respond, and he had been letting me take care of him, he never insisted that he was okay, and his eye was dull and sad, and he looked like he had given up. I was so scared that I was going to lose him." I told them. "While he was out, the guards came back with a glass of water and something wrapped loosely in white cloth. The guard pulled out needles and some knives. He stuck one of the needles in my arm and I couldn't move. The other guard dropped the glass of water on the ground, the glass shattered and the water was all over the floor. Then the guard with the needles stabbed one into Percy's arm." I filled everyone in on what had happened when Percy had passed out. "Percy woke up."
"Thanks, Wise Girl." Percy said, placing his hand back on the glass wall between us. "I woke up and the guard talked about my back being broken, so he had called the doctors in to perform a 'surgery'" Percy put air quotes around the word surgery, and I suppressed a giggle. Surgery was definitely not the right word to describe what they did to him. "And one of the guards picked Annabeth up and placed her on the bed that was in the corner as doctors came in with stuff. She had to watch as they basically just chopped off everything below the small of my back. And they replaced part of my face."
Everyone stared at him with open mouths, eyes as big as saucers, and all-together shocked expressions on their faces.
"Well then. That says how you guys have been. Has anyone else got anything else to share?" Jason was the first to come out of his stupor. And we all talked. All of us were careful not to mention or bring up in any way the gods or anything to do with Greek or Roman mythology. We talked until the door on they guys' side of the glass wall opened and a guard walked in.
"Hour's up, punks. Let's go." He said. But my eyes weren't on him. They were on Percy. He was wide-eyed and beginning to hyperventilate.
"Shit!" I said shot to my feet and dashed to the glass wall. Percy had backed up and pressed his back to it, cowering. "Percy. Percy, baby. Baby, it's okay. It's over. He's gone. Baby, listen to me. Listen to my voice. It's okay. Fight it. You're stronger than the flash-black. You're strong enough to beat this. Come on, baby. Come on, fight it. You can do it. It's alright. He's gone now. He can't hurt you anymore." I pressed my hands against the wall and talked to him, trying to save him from the flash-back. "Come on, Seaweed Brain, look at me. Look at me, Percy. Fight it, Percy. Look at me. Focus on my voice. Anchor yourself with me. Look at me, listen to me, Focus on me, Perce. You can do it." I kept saying encouragement to my boyfriend as the other boys threatened the guard and made him back off.
Slowly, Percy fought with himself, turning to look at me. Trying to focus his fractured gaze on my face, listening and anchoring himself with the sound of my voice. "Come on, Percy. Come back to me. You're almost there, Perce. You're almost back. Just a little harder, try a little harder. Just a little farther and you're back. Come on. You can do it. Come on, Seaweed Brain." His faraway gaze returned to stare at me, and his breath returned to normal. He gasped and squeezed his eyes shut, leaning on the glass wall for support and as a way of trying to get to me.
I muttered more things to him for a minute, then I turned and glared at the guard. "Percy, I'm not Gabe, okay? I'm not talking to you, and I will never hurt you. Got that?" I muttered to my boyfriend. He nodded, probably knowing that I was about to go off on the guard.
"You son of a bitch! What the Hell is wrong with you? You fucking bastard! How fucking dare you give my boyfriend a fucking panic attack! You piece of shit! You're an asshole and I'm going to beat your ass the moment you come close enough! I will kill you for that! Asshole! Bitch! Bastard! Fucking dick!" I screamed at the guard and he backed up hastily, fear evident in every movement.
"S-stay away from me! S-stay away!" He said and ran out of the room. I turned back to Percy.
"Are you okay? You alright now?" I asked him gently. He nodded and took a deep breath.
"Y-yeah. Yeah, I'm good now." He said, standing up straight and opening his eyes. I smiled and his face lit up in a smile as well. I glanced at the others who were staring at me from the exchange I had given the guard. I saw what was behind them. I gasped.
"Guys..." I said. Unbelievable. Did... Did he really do that? Is this really happening? Is it really possible?
"Annabeth?" Percy asked, looking worried.
"Look... Look behind you. The... The door..." I couldn't get a full sentence out. Everyone swiveled to started at the door.
"Oh my God..." Thalia muttered, remembering to keep to the 'there's-no-such-thing-as-the-Greek-and-Roman-gods!-What-are-you-guys-talking-about?' façade.
"It's... It's wide open." Piper said.
"Percy! Run out the door and look to see where the guards are. Jason, go out after he says it's okay. Open our door. Frank, help Jason with the door. Leo, you too. Nico, help Percy guard them. You're both intimidating, even without the big swords. And even dressed in all white." I started giving orders, a plan for escape coming together in my head. "Thalia, work on the door from this side. Piper, stand right behind her and be ready to leap out and use your charm-speak to help get us out of here. Hazel, you're with me." No one questioned my directions, they all did exactly what I told them. Percy ran out the door and looked down the hallway, then called back 'Clear!' and Jason dashed out, running to our door. I could hear him fiddling with the lock and pounding on the door. Thalia was doing the same thing. Leo rushed out after him, joining him at the door. I saw Thalia jump back clutching her hand as she shrieked.
"Leo! A little warning next time! That hurts!" She yelled through the door. Nico dashed out into the hallway with a terrifying glare as he disappeared from my view. Piper was muttering to herself and pacing behind Thalia, who was now shaking her hand and cussing up a storm. But I focused on Hazel and the glass wall in front of us.
"Hazel, I want you to focus. Use the mist to make it look like nothing is happening. The boys are standing in the other room, the door is still closed, Jason and Piper are pressed against the glass trying to get to each other, so are Percy and I and you and Frank. Thalia and Nico are pacing around the room, glaring dangerously at the doors and cursing like there's no tomorrow. Leo is sitting in a corner, trying to calm us all down, fidgeting with his hands and his feet bouncing around like he had twenty cappuccinos. Come on, Haze. You can do it. Imagine it. Make it real. Come on..."
