" Hello. This is Hannah Paige, scientist at World In Catastrophe: Time Travel Department. This is the last log I'm entering. Today marks the success of my experiment and..." I trailed off. I inhaled slowly trying to stop any more tears from escaping my eyes. My throat felt hoarse and dry, I coughed then proceeded, " a-and the death of my sister, Ava Paige,  the highest-ranking official of World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department. 

         I stared at my reflection on the computer screen. With smudged make-up, blood covering my white lab coat and rebel tears running in salty rivers down my chin and flushed cheeks,  I was a mess. No matter the numerous times I've experienced grief and lose, it never got easier and this was certainly the most painful. 

       My mind, now a storm of depressing thoughts of both hopelessness and helplessness, was being abused with heartbreaking flashbacks of what were once happy memories. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I spoke and opened up like I had never before. " Both driven by determination to be the best, my sister and I always competed. Who was the brightest? Who would be more successful? And now, who would find a much-needed solution and save the world? But even so, we loved each other."

      Guilt brewed in my stomach as I realized how little I'd done to show my love and adoration for my older sister. It was believed we were but another family  torn by hatred, rivalry and the approaching end of the world whilst the truth was far from that. I looked down at my hands, fingers fidgeting and painted red. A loud sob racked my body yet somehow I continued, " We both wanted to save the world but my sister and I, we never agreed. I despised the methods she used and she hated my ways too. But deep down, we loved and supported each other." 

      A sigh escaped my lips. " She deemed time travel impossible, a machine found only in the pages of a good sci-fi novel. Foolish and irresponsible, she used to call me for going through with my experiments. Heartless and evil, I used to label her experiments. She would always defend herself but I never believed turning kids into experiment rats was the answer. "

       I sniffled loudly but kept going, " My previous fear of her being killed by one of her own experiment subjects was proved wrong, instead she was coldly shot dead by her trusted friend Janson. " I spit his name with venom in my voice. I turned away from the camera and held my head in my hands. I was trembling as I tried to calm my body down. 

     Suddenly, a need for revenge and vengeance filled my senses.With wide eyes and new determination, I snapped out of my dilemma. "But hope has been restored. The time machine works and it is time to proceed with my plan. I'll go back in time and stop the Flare. I'll ... I'll "  I gulped. "I'll kill Janson and get Ava back."

     " Hello. This is Hannah Paige. I did it!" I grinned at my camera with pure bliss. " My machine has proved capable of transporting both people and objects back in time without altering their contents. " 

    My heart was beating fast and loud as excitement took my breath away. " I went back and avenged my sister and now, she's alive. She's alive!" I repeated more to myself and emitted a laugh. 

     Aided by relief and driven by purpose, i focused. " Fear not for I haven't forgotten my plan. I will defeat the Flare before it even begins. I promise I'll save us all. "

    Ava walked into my laboratory. Just the sight of her with her hair pulled back as usual made the side of my lips tug upwards. In this moment, I had no doubt that together we would save the world.

       "Hello. This is Hannah Paige. I fa-failed. " My voice cracked but I refused to cry. As shame and guilt now ran in my blood, I kept my head down not daring to face the camera. " I failed the world. The Flare was not stopped and is now starting to spread again. "

      " I'm seeing the horrors all over again. I'm losing loved ones. The world is losing its humanity." Only once I tasted the saltiness of my tears did I realize I had failed at keeping my emotions at bay as well. My lips quivered, " I'm a failure and everyone will face the consequences with me. "

     " I'm a-afraid. " I breathed out. Hiccups started shaking my entire body and I just stared ahead. No more hope, no more words. That's when Ava barged into the room, out of breath and a crazy look on her face.

    "Sister, no more tears. " She grabbed my hands and pulled me to my feet. " I have a solution to all this. The immunes..." I shook my head and turned away. I knew very well where this was heading for we've had this conversation before.

    Determined, she turned me around and explained her idea.  She spoke quickly and clearly, confidence oozing from every word. "No!" I protested.

    "No?" She looked confused and disappointed. "Surely, it will take time but I'm certain it'll work."

     Looking in her eyes, I knew I couldn't muster another lie so I told her the truth. How I was from the future, how her experiments killed countless children. How we both found a solution but far too late. I tried to convince her to come with me, to go back in time together and try this again. As long as we had that machine, hope would be found.

    However, she looked at me as if I had lost my marbles. With a firm voice, she said, " You could work on your fantasy if you want but I'm going through with my plan."

   She turned around to leave but I caught her arm. "No! I won't let you hurt those kids again!"

   Fury and rage crossed her face and she yelled, " You yourself said my way worked. Those kids' sacrifices will not go in vain. My plan " She pointed to herself. " is bullet proof."

   Frustrated, I replied angrily, " Far from that actually. A whole group of kids, one of them being the cure, escaped your so-called perfect plan!"

   "You're just jealous you're not as clever as I am!" She screamed.

   More hateful words were exchanged in our heated argument. Having enough, I turned my back to her to realize the camera was still recording. Suddenly, agonizing pain spread through my body. However, my heart suffered even more when I turned around and realized Ava shot me.

   "I won't let family cloud my judgement of what I should do. Goodbye sister." She exclaimed, dropped the gun and walked out the door, leaving me heartbroken and alone to die. With sharp gasps, I clutched the gun and my stomach, and wobbly made my way into my machine. Fear paralyzed me as I thought of how this changed everything.

    Things were worse than I presumed. Ava drove herself insane but the crazed woman still managed to find the cure earlier than last time. Sorrowful sobs left my lips as I realized the effects of my words. She made sure no one escaped and no one ever made it out to the Scorch. She didn't just turn the kids into experiments. She broke them.

    My legs were shaking as I finally found my sister in her laboratory. I knew I didn't have much longer. I fell to my knees. "Sister!" I struggled to smile, despite of everything I still loved her.

    Shock crossed her features and she gasped audibly, "Yo-you're alive?"

    I could only reply with a nod. "Hannah, I found the cure! I told yo-" She was interrupted when a notification appeared on her computer and the robot spoke, " The continuing of the trials have been approved. "

    I gasped and my heart felt stepped on. "You already found the cure, why continue torturing the kids?" I demanded an answer.

    "But I want more. The kids are too damaged now anyways." She answered unfazed by her own cruelty.

    My sister has become a monster that must be stopped. I couldn't let her hurt those kids again. With trembling hands, I held her gun and aimed for her head. "I won't let family cloud my judgement of what I should do. Goodbye sister." I spat her own words back at her and pulled the trigger. Peacefully, I stared in her lifeless eyes as I took my last breaths, knowing the world was saved and my conscious was finally clear.
