Chapter 2 Coffee Maker
Barbara Laws POV:
I arrive at the office on time Monday morning. This was a relief since the traffic was crazy. I also brought coffee and purchased an extra one for the boss. I thought it would be a good way to start my first day. I smiled as I entered his office and set the mug on his desk.
"Miss Laws, what is this?" My boss asked.
"Mr. Jack Nickelson, it is a double latte with spearmint, and two scoops of cook whip," I said.
"I see, you did well. I am pleased that you managed to get my coffee order right. I am impressed," He replied. "Well, good I aim to please, sir," I remarked.
"I will let the sir remark, slide for now," He said. "For now, we need to go over your duties. You must see to it to answer all my calls, remind me of appointments, put any files I ask for on my desk, and bring me coffee daily. As for lunch, you will have to pack it, which I see you failed to do, or money to purchase it throughout the week. It is the start of the work week, so, here, you take this for today's lunch," He stated and slipped some cash into the right side pocket of my dress.
"The dress is professional which is good, but it lacks a certain beauty. No matter, you may use the change from lunch to find something more suitable," He remarked.
I got to pull out the files he asked for, place them on his desk, answer two calls, and take notes. I reminded him that he was to go home for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
"Yes, Miss Barabra Laws I know," He groaned. I had no idea why he should react in such a way.
Tasha chose to enter his office. She twirled her hair and flashed a smile in his direction. I shook my head. Talk about unprofessional. She was not being paid to be a flirt with the boss.
"Tasha, what brings you here? Is your office on fire or something?" He asked. "Oh, the contrary, Mr. Nickelson, the coffee maker is down. Frank reminds me of this about every ten minutes. He is getting on my last nerves, sir." Tasha said. "Hmm, I see, then, Miss Laws you will see to it the rest of the staff is brought coffee too until the coffee machine is up and running again," He said. "Tasha, you are dismissed, now get back to work."
Tasha rolled her eyes in annoyance as she left the room. I could tell she was not thrilled to be dismissed so quickly. What is the deal with her, I thought.
I worked hard. Soon, it was time for lunch, so I headed to the lunch room. I ate a salad, a baked potato, and some chicken tenders. I drank some iced tea. After lunch, I entered the area where the work clothes were available for purchase. I paid for a new dress. I cringed at the shrugs the lady who handed me the receipt gave me. I left the room and entered the restroom. I changed into the dress, placing the previous one into the trash can. I could not be caught wearing an"ugly" dress again. I went back to work.
I noticed the boss eyeing me in surprised. He grinned as he held up both thumbs in approval and said, "Good improvement, that dress is lovely, and it makes you look dashing."
I did not respond because I did not want to give him the wrong idea. I was not here for a relationship with him, or anyone else. I was only here for the job.
