Chapter One
The sound of arguing filled my ears.
My eyes fluttered open and I looked sat up in my bed. I let out a yawn and stretched. I bit my lip slightly before standing up. My feet hit the soft carpet of my bedroom floor. I sighed and walked over to my closet. I hummed in thought and changed into this:
I walked out of my room and stood in the hallways. I could hear people yelling in a slightly hushed tone. My eyebrows furrowed as I quietly crept down the stairs. I could make out that it was a male and female. "We have to tell her Kimberly!" The male exclaimed. "Shes not ready to know yet!" She yelled back. I walked down further and the stair creeked.
I froze as the talking immediately stooped. "Viviane, is that you?" The female called. I could hear the voice clearer now seeing as I was closer. It was obviously my mother and father. I didn't respond to the question, it went dead silent. "Viv darling, come out please" my father said.
Hesitantly, I walked down the stairs and into the kitchen. I looked between the two of them. "How much did you hear?" My mother questioned me. I raised an eyebrow. "Nothing" I lied. "Do you know how rude eavesdropping is!" She exclaimed. I huffed. "Want to know whats also rude? Talking about someone behind their back" I gave her a slight glare.
She rolled her eyes and my father cleared his throat. "Viviane we have something to tell you" he said in a serious tone. I looked over at him. He had never called me Viviane before. I sighed and looked at him expectantly. He glanced over at my mother. "You're adopted" they announced at the same time. My eyes widened in shock as I looked between them in disbelief. "Very funny" I said in a sarcastic tone. "Sweetheart we're not kidding" my dad stated.
My eyes widened. "This has to be some kind of joke!" I sputtered. "We're not joking, now do you want to hear the truth or not?" My mother snapped. I could see she was trying to be nice, but by the aggravated look she gave my father it was obvious she wasnt happy. "Fine" I sighed with a frown. My mother looked over at my dad before starting. "It way many years ago, you were just a baby...." her voice trailed off.
Flashback...
It was completely dark outside. The only lights that truly illuminated the darkness were the stars lighting up the sky. A knock was heard on the door. The door creaked open and the light from the house shined out. A man wearing a dark cloak stood on the porch of the house. The hood covered his face, his identity hidden. In his arms held a small, baby girl. He rocked her gently in his arms.
When the door opened a young couple stood there. They were Mr Winter and Mrs Winter. He studied the pair, his eyes gleaming with tears. "Please, take my daughter" he pleaded as he gently placed her in the womens arms. She looked at him in surprise. "Her name is Viviane Rose" he said in a hurried tone. He looked back at the woods as his eyes showed slight fear. "Watch her, please" he sighed and looked down at his daughter. He caressed her face gently. "Goodbye, my little flower" he whispered. He placed an envelope in the fathers hands. It was decorated by swirls and many bright colors.
His signature was written in small letters in the corner of the envelope. Barely noticeable, but still there. A single tear fell down his face as he dashed back into the night. The baby started to cry as he left, the young couple was startled. The mother rocked her gently, as they walked back inside the house. The door was shut behind them, the outdoors going back to being complete darkness.
Present time....
My mother sighed. "We would have told you sweetheart, we just didn't think you were ready" she said quietly. I was frozen. My entire life, was merely a lie. An act kept up for so many years. I couldn't believe it. My father studied me. "Viv darling, say something" he told me, his eyes pleading and slightly glossed. I looked in his direction. "You lied to me, for so long" I frowned. I felt the anger slowly begin to bubble up inside me.
He looked at me. "It was to protect you" he said. "From what? The truth, its obvious I cant believe anything you guys say anymore!" I exclaimed. My mother glared at me. "Watch your tone!" She scolded. "Or what, you'll lie to me again?" I huffed and started to storm off.
"Don't you want the letter?" My dad asked and I froze. I slowly turned around to see the letter lying there in his hand. There were swirls on it that seemed to be faded, and the once bright color was now dull. I took it from him and walked back up to my room without a word.
I sat down on my bed and stared at the letter. I bit my lip as my hands shook slightly. I gently opened the envelope and took out the letter. My hands shook. I sighed before starting to read.
My little flower,
You have no idea how sorry I am. For not being there, for not seeing your first steps or hearing your first words. For not being able to watch you grow up in my arms. Im sorry I wasn'table to be there. If you're reading this, im assuming that you have come of age. There are so many things I want to tell you, that I can't explain through this. Im sorry to say, that your mother has died during the madness of our lives. She just wasn't able to make it. I have faith that you will find me soon. I love you so much,
Love, .......
I squinted at the letter. The signature was written in ink and had been smudged. I felt something wet drip down my face. My hand went up to my cheek. I had been crying and I hadn't realized it. Before I knew it, uncontrollable sobs were leaving my mouth. I was so upset about everything. About my father abandoning me, about my mother who had died, and about my so called parents who had lied to me. My eyes fluttered shut and I ended up crying myself to sleep.
