Chapter 53
(Edited)
"Is this where you plan to kill me?" I asked Michael, who was holding my hand and pulling me after him into some dark part of the woods. Not creepy at all!
"Why on earth would I tell you that. Mind the log!" He pointed at something in front of us. "What murderer ever tells his victim that?"
"A very considerate one," I mumbled, pulling my jersey closer to my body, shivering. I continued following after him, removing branches out of my way and trying not to step on dangerous things on the ground.
Michael held a branch, so it wouldn't smack me in the face while I passed. "Well sorry princess, but I'm not considerate. Besides, why would you like to know where you die?" He asked, confusion written all over his face.
I shrugged lightly. "Because I would want it to be a nice-looking place."
Michael chuckled but stayed quiet. We were currently walking into the woods on our way to our date apparently. Why our date was in the middle of nowhere confused me, but I followed, nonetheless. I was incredibly excited and even dressed up. Nothing fancy though, I just put a bit of effort into it, Emily would be proud. Now onto the million-dollar question; Why was our date in the middle of the woods? I was about to ask him again because I was slightly irritated, but before I could, he suddenly stopped and turned around to look at me.
"Close your eyes."
I gave him a sceptical look but did as told. I stood with my eyes closed for a few minutes. Michael was fumbling with something unknown to me in the near distance.
"I promise if you plan to leave me here alone and make a run for it, I'll kick your butt!" I yelled out to him. His laughter could be heard to my right and then silence. A few more minutes past and Michael hadn't come back yet. Michael's arms wrapped around my stomach, and I jumped, being startled.
"I would never leave you," he whispered. "Now open your eyes."
I opened my eyes and what I saw in front of me was so beautiful, magical even. I thought it was going to be some cliché picnic near a river or a small waterfall like I've read in so many books. Although those were beautiful scenarios, I wanted something different. And different I got; an abandoned amusement park in the middle of the woods.
It wasn't an entire amusement park but a small one. There were fairy lights all around us, lighting everything up. There was a giant Ferris wheel on my left, and because it was dark previously, I couldn't see it. In the middle, at the far end, was a table with candles and a basket on it. There was on my right, an old broken-down ride. Even though it was old and broken, there was a vintage feel to the entire area. But what I loved the most was the way the woods wrapped itself around this area. It made its own little dome around the small park and what made it so beautiful was the fairy lights that intertwined within all the branches. I was so overwhelmed with my surroundings that I momentarily forgot that Michael was here with me.
When I looked away from the lights and down to Michael, I found him already staring at me, our hands intertwined.
"You like?" He asked with the biggest smile on his face.
His smile was so bright I could have sworn he was shooting a Colgate commercial. His dimples were prominent, giving me butterflies all over. I was at lost for words. I didn't know if I should continue staring at his happy state or blubber like an idiot, looking for the right answer. Instead, I answered him with a shake of my head. His eyes beamed with joy and his smile grew wider.
He looked over to the Ferris wheel and grabbed my hand. "Come on." He pulled me towards it. My entire body was bubbling with excitement.
"How did you find this place?"
"Well I was drunk one night and drove into this area." I shot him a scolding look and he smiled sheepishly. "My father and I got into a major fight." He tried to reason.
I glared playfully, and he smiled. He motioned with his head towards the picnic table, and I followed with a smile.
"After dinner, I'll take you on the ferries wheel."
"It still works?" I asked, shocked, taking a seat in front of him.
He shook his head. "When I first found the place, nothing worked, but after some improvements, everything worked." He explained.
Michael pulled a basket closer to him and removed some containers. Dinner was perfect; it consisted of all my favourite foods, pizza and burger with coke.
I smiled. "You sure know how to treat a lady, don't you?"
Michael pushed some of his hair back and smirked. "I live to please!"
"And here I thought you pleased to live!"
He glared. "Ha-ha, funny!"
I winked. "I thought so."
I looked around the area, taking everything in once again. It was honestly beautiful. There was so much mystery around us, the machines were old, but it had character. It spoke a silent story.
"Why would you stick around?" I looked away from everything and stared into Michael's beautiful eyes.
He looked around and gave a small smile. "When I saw it for the first time, it reminded me of you."
"Of me?" I asked perplexed.
He bit into his pizza. "Well, you when you were four," he explained.
"So, my four-year-old self reminds you of an old abandoned amusement park?" Amusement laced in my every word.
Michael choked on his pizza with a laugh. He spits his bite out to the side, and I scrunched my nose in disgust. When the pizza was gone, he laughed even more than before.
He took a deep breath to calm himself. "That's definitely not what I meant and thank you for trying to kill me."
I chuckled and raised my eyebrows. "Then what did you mean?"
"When you were younger, this type of place was your favourite." He explained. "You used to love going to amusement parks and going on rides, spending time with your brothers and me, but those horses were your favourites." I turned around and stared at them.
They were newly painted and shiny. The lights were reflecting on them, and it made a sort of disco vibe on the roof of it. I felt bad for Michael because here he sat reminiscing about our younger years, but I couldn't even remember anything before the age of five. The smile on his face was so warm and loving I couldn't break his spirit. So, I masked my sad face and replaced it with a small smile.
"That's beautiful." He shook his head, agreeing.
We ate silently for a bit longer, admiring the beauty that nature had given us. It wasnt uncomfortable between us; we could sit in utter silence for a very long time and enjoy each others presence. I looked up from my plate, and into Michaels beautiful eyes, I smiled.
"I dont want to start something, but I feel that we need to talk about the whole bracelet fiasco."
I sighed and braced myself. "Ok."
"I understand why you did it, but I cant live with the fact that you got hurt. I know that you dont want me to do anything or say anything, so we need to compromise. I wont get involved or push things as long as you tell me when youre hurt so that I could at least help you feel better." He looked at me with so much emotion in his eyes that I wanted to jump into his arms and tell him everything, but I couldnt. So instead, I settle with making a promise that I would let him know when Im hurt.
I wasnt going to tell him the details or when things happened, but I couldnt lie to him anymore. It was a big step for him. I knew that if he had his way, he would beat them to a pulp and call the cops as well. But I couldnt let that happen, not when I was so close to freedom.
"Are you done eating? "He asked, standing up. I shook my head and followed his movements, cleaning up the table.
"Where are we going?" Michael took my hand and led me towards the Ferris wheel.
"Up there!" He looked up, pointing at the furthest point.
I swallowed loudly, my eyes widened. "Are you sure?" My voice shook with fear.
Michael's eyes lit up, and he smirked. "What's wrong Princess, afraid of heights?" He taunted.
I wanted to tell him the truth so badly, but I was a stubborn person so, instead, I shook my head no and strutted up towards the seat. I buckled myself in and shot him a smirk. Michael chuckled and with a shake of his head, he pressed the button on his remote. The cart started moving upwards, and I wanted to puke. Why did I lie? They say when you're afraid of heights, and your high up don't look down, but they never tell you that you don't have a choice. Your entire body can't help but look down; a deep want to be on the grown, near safety. My heart started to raise every time we moved higher. I was sure Michael sat next to me, but my fear wouldn't let me focus on anything else.
And then, it stopped. The Ferris wheel stopped at the very top. My hands grabbed the railing with an immense grip, and I could feel myself getting lightheaded. If it wasn't for my fear, I could be enjoying the view. I was sure it was beautiful, but instead, I sat shaking like a leaf.
"Autumn," Michael's voice called, trying to get my attention. "Baby, look at me." Michael pulled my chin towards him so I could look him in his eyes. His green eyes sparkled more than usual, and I realized it was because of the reflection of the moon.
"Breath!" He instructed.
I slowly forgot the fact that I was remarkably high up and instead got lost in Michael's eyes. They were a light green right now, and it felt like they were telling me a story. Everything about him was perfect.
My eyes roamed all over his face, taking everything in. I liked everything about him; from his black hair that hung in his eyes -most of the times - to his chiselled jaw and sparkling green eyes. He was a beautiful creation. Here he sat in front of me, and I couldn't understand how Elizabeth could leave him, how she chose someone else over him.
I couldn't even imagine a day without him, and he wasn't even my boyfriend. I couldn't see myself living here without him in my life. We've known each other for almost two years, and these past few months had more meaning than those two years. Yes, we knew one another when we were little, but it didnt count because people grew and changed. Nonetheless, I appreciated the second chance we got to be in each others lives.
"I lied, I'm extremely, afraid of heights," I confessed.
Michael pulled my face closer and left a lingering kiss on my forehead. "I know." He pulled back and smiled. "I knew even before I brought you here."
I looked at him, confused. The urge to punch him was strong. "Then why bring me?"
"Because the view is worth it."
I slowly looked away from him and stared out in front of me. From up here, we could see so far away. I stared at everything in awe. The lights of the town were breathtaking at this time of night. They sparkled so brightly, lighting everything around it. The stars above us shined just as beautiful.
"Breathtakingly beautiful," Michael whispered.
I looked at Michael and found him already staring at me. From the look in his eyes, I realized he wasn't talking about the lights. I blushed and looked away. Michael moved some of my hair behind my ear, and I looked at him again.
"You have no idea how frustrated you make me," Michael confessed, and my heart broke a bit. I fumbled with my hands, and he continued. "How angry you make me. So angry that at times I want to pull my hair out."
"What's your point?" I asked, trying to contain my anger but moved away from him.
He pulled me back. "That even if you make me angry or frustrated, I can't stop myself from falling for you."
A small, unexpected gasp left my mouth. "You... You're falling for me?"
"Without a doubt." He smiled, showing off his dimples. He took both of my hands in his. "I know this is our first date, and people don't usually do things this way, but I don't care." He rambled on.
I squeezed his hands, urging him to continue.
He turned serious. "You are an incredible person, and you deserve the entire universe, but I, unfortunately, cant give it to you. So, Ill settle with giving you my heart, if youll have it." My eyes widened, and my heart quickened, was he saying what I think hes saying. "Autumn Young, will you be my girlfriend?"
I stared at him and realized how nervous he actually was, and I couldn't help but like him even more.
"You're smart!" I commented. Michael looked a bit hurt because I didn't give him an answer but played along anyway.
"Why do you say that?"
I chuckled. "Because you made sure to ask me up here so I wouldn't have another choice but, say yes."
Michael winked; his shoulders calmed down, realizing I was joking around. "Well, I have to make sure I get what I want."
I intertwined our hands and sighed contently. "Well if I want to survive, I should probably say yes."
"Definitely." He smiled a toothy smile.
I chuckled, and instead of answering him, I moulded our lips together, giving him the answer he wanted.
