CHAPTER 3
(Edited)
How did people usually remember important stuff and kept them safe inside the brain until the very last moment when they needed information? Small things like the colour of a strangers hair that they briefly met, a ten-digit phone number of a hot guy that they have been recently stalking and so many other things. That clearly showed how amazing the brain worked.
There was so much data that went into your brain daily. The brain, on its own, sorted out what was mandatory and what it could discard. Clearly, something went wrong in the making of mine; I couldn't remember small, important things. Not my phone number, yesterdays food, my childhood friends, and definitely not my locker combination, yet my horrible past still lingered, fresh in my mind.
I could study my butt off for any test and ace it, but for some reason, all the other information disappeared. Maybe I had short-term memory loss? I should probably have it checked out, but for the time being, all I could do was bang my head against the locker, hoping the impact would make it pop open. When nothing happened, I gave up and just laid my head against the cold metal.
Why did this always happen to me? I was usually so organized and had everything that I couldn't remember written down, but now I couldnt remember where I put my locker combination. What made everything worse was that I would be late for math.
Lilly snorted, 'because youre just dying to get to math.'
27-7-14, A sweet, familiar voice, whispered into my left ear. Without turning around, I punched in the digits, and the lock popped open.
I turned around with the biggest grin plastered on my face. Youre a total lifesaver. What could I possibly do without you? I praised her.
She flicked her hair behind her shoulder. I know Im amazing. She winked and opened the locker right next to mine.
'Emily Jones', my best friend in the world, was a stunningly, beautiful girl. We were nothing alike in the looks department; she was tall and slender with brown, straight hair that somehow always looked like it was shining in the light. She had this sophisticated thing about her no matter what she wore but still managed to look playful and sexy at the same time. She was extremely outgoing; if she liked a guy, she would go after him. No insecurities would stand in her way. That was something we always butted heads on; I was insecure beyond belief, and she couldnt seem to understand why.
Emily stared at me, suspiciously rubbing her index finger against my bruised cheek. Are you wearing base? She asked accusingly. She reminded me of a mother catching her daughter wearing make-up for the first time.
I took a step back and hissed, glaring at her. Her eyes widened, and she panicked.
Im so sorry, she apologized. Are you okay? Did this happen over the weekend? She asked, shooting questions left and right without breathing in between. Emily grabbed my arms and looked for more bruises.
Why didnt you tell me?
I pulled myself away from her and rolled my eyes. Because you didnt ask, I answered her sarcastically.
Emily glared, not liking my answer.
Im fine besides, Ive had worse. Lets drop it okay? Instead of answering me, she pulled me towards math and ignored me all the way.
Technically I lied when I said I didnt have any friends. I had one friend, and it was not by choice. I didnt even want to be friends with Emily at the beginning. I was new, and she was a persistent girl that stuck and grew on me. I tried everything to get away from her, but she wouldnt give up.
'Talk about being a blood-sucking leech,' Lilly comments drily. Dont start, Lilly.
One thing led to another, and we became great friends; so great that she decided to walk into the bathroom one day, while I was dressing and saw all my bruises. Naturally, I had to explain, but I was slightly starting to regret it. But I had to admit it was nice having someone to talk to besides Lilly. Someone I could rely on, that knew all my secrets; well some of them anyway, and whom I could trust completely.
I poked Emily in the ribs after we sat down in math class. I love that dress on you. I joked, trying to ease the tension I created.
I looked at the dress and realized it looked familiar. It was a black and white flower-printed, sleeveless dress with a thin black belt in the middle, it stopped mid-thigh and puffed up at the end.
You have the same one in your closet, you just refuse to wear it, Emily informed me with a playful eye roll. Her eye roll was code for you are forgiven, stop flattering me.
No wonder it looked familiar; we bought it the same day when she decided to kidnap me for a shopping spree. I had so many things in my closet that I was never going to wear, but did she stop? No, of course not. Emily Jones did whatever she pleased.
Good morning, students! Our math teacher, Ms Williams, greeted us. Her small figure entered the room with a bright smile on her face. Her blonde hair was tied into a bun making her head look bigger than it already was, and her grey pantsuit fit perfectly with her hair making her look like a lawyer.
I looked around the classroom, absent-mindedly answering her greeting. Chairs scraped against the tiles as students took their seats.
'What are the chances that he wont show up today?' Lilly asked.
'Very slim, old chum,' I answer her, disappointedly.
Ms Williams turned and wrote on the chalkboard, Trigonometric functions, and since it was something, I was good at, I decided to look out the window and not pay attention.
Her classroom was on the first floor allowing the sun to brighten up the room. Ms Williams painted the room entirely green; my favourite colour and it was contrasting very nicely with the suns reflection.
Emily and I sat in the left middle corner, away from everyone else as per my request. The three whose names I didn't want to mention sat in the right back corner talking and laughing all the oxygen out of their lungs; focusing on math wasnt one of their priorities. Luckily for me, there were only two of them sitting back there.
'Jason and Mason Loud', Lilly sighs dreamily. So much for not naming names!
Anyway, Jason and Masons parents were on the top-ten list of the wealthiest people in the entire world. Their father was a marketing genius; he owned about five successful companies of all sorts all over the globe. Their mother was a famous renowned designer and owned a few clothing stores in Milan. I honestly didnt know what a person could do with so much money. They could definitely retire early; Jason and Mason wouldn't even have to work a day in their lives.
My thoughts got interrupted by a loud knock coming from the door. My breath got caught in my throat, and my hands started shaking. I move them under the table quickly, I could feel my heart was on overdrive. There was only one person who would show up late for class and knock as if he was trying to kick the door down.
'Michael Woods, the most mouth-watering boy to ever exist', Lilly said, dreamily.
I had to give it to her, he was definitely a fine specimen, but unfortunately, his personality made him ugly.
Arrogance, check!
Bad manners, check!
Biggest ego on the planet, double-check!
To top it all off, he was a bully and only to me. He called me names and pulled horrible tricks on me and nobody else. If only this good-looking guy had more to him.
Thank you for gracing us with your presence, Ms William said sarcastically.
Michael salutes her with two fingers. Youre welcome. He ignored everyone around him and walked to his seat.
Even his voice is sexy!
When Michael sat down; he and his friends jump into a serious discussion. I couldnt help but stare at him; his presence pulled me in like a magnet. His dark, black hair lay messily on his head, giving him a laid-back look, but I was sure he was one of those guys who spend hours on their hair. He had a black shirt on and blue jeans; ripped at the knees. He had this bad boy persona going on, and it made him even more attractive.
Michael must have felt someone stare at him because his head snapped up, and our eyes met. His deep, green irises burned a hole into me from how intense it was. His face was blank, but there was some unexplainable emotion that lingered behind his eyes. His eyes were the perfect colour for any girl to get lost in. He looked me up and down, eyes calculating. It became so intense that I couldnt handle it anymore and looked away.
Michael: 1
Autumn: 0.
The class had been going on for twenty-five minutes now. Emily was sitting beside me, focusing on the work that Ms Williams was explaining. I honestly couldnt understand how she could concentrate with all the talking and laughing coming from the back. Didnt it bother anyone that those three were talking up a storm and disrupting the rest of us? I couldnt take it anymore, it didnt seem like Ms Williams was going to do anything about it, so I have to. I slowly started to turn around; to tell them to stop being disruptive, but Emily grabbed my arm and stopped me.
Dont intervene, its not worth it! she whispered in my ear.
I huffed and turned back to the front. Emily just didnt want Mason to get into any trouble. She had been crushing on him since pre-school, and I was sure he felt the same way, but he was kind of oblivious. Instead of telling them to keep quiet, I turned and glared at them, but off-course, I was a lucky girl, and my glare got noticed by Michael. He opened his mouth to say something but changed his mind at the very last minute and looked away.
Michael 1:
Autumn: 1.
When my class was over, I bolted out of there so fast that I didnt even say goodbye to Emily. Now I stood, stuck in traffic. I really needed to get to biology, but unfortunately, I was surrounded by a herd of elephants. I pushed some kids aside and squeezed between others when out of nowhere, I got elbowed in my left ribcage. I sucked in a deep breath and grabbed onto someone to keep myself from falling to the ground. My entire body was on fire, and I was struggling to breathe. I looked around for the culprit when I saw his black hair sticking over the crowd. Michael looked back at me and regret was written all over his face, but it disappears as quickly as it came, he shook his head and turned the corner.
I walked to biology and found a seat in the very back corner. I slumped my body over a table and held onto my ribs and repeated the mantra The pain will stop as many times as I needed to. I was concentrating so hard on trying to get the pain to simmer down that I missed my teacher asking me a question.
Miss Young, Im sorry to disturb your daydreaming but would you mind answering my question? Mr Fits asked sarcastically.
I stared at him, trying to figure out what exactly it was that he asked me, but I couldn't answer him. His face turned red from the fact that I had just disobeyed a direct order.
Ill try to keep my aching ribs out of your biology class, I thought sarcastically.
Its when a cell duplicates, during which one cell splits into two identical daughter cells, and it has four stages, A familiar voice answered. I turned my head and realized that the answer came from Michael.
'Did Michael just help you?' Lilly asked, shocked.
Why would Michael help me? It was only about twenty minutes ago when he jabbed me in the bloody ribs.
Mr Fits raised his eyebrows at Michael and said, Thank you, Miss Young.
Michael shrugged. Shes too stupid to answer the question. Im just trying to move the class along. He sent a wink my way and smiled smugly.
He helped you, to humiliate you!
