CHAPTER 2

(Edited)

The wood underneath me was cold but I got used to it quickly. My entire body was tingling; it happened every time I walked into a library. It was as if my body knew how I felt around so many books. The excitement and anxiety to read every single book overwhelmed me; so much so that I decided to leave my table and look around the romance section. I didn't know why I decided on the romance section, because I personally thought it was a big joke. I didn't believe in love at first sight or in any of that 'girl meets boy, they fall in love and live happily ever-after,' it was a load of bull. Love wasn't a fairy tale. It was not perfect or everlasting. It ends, and when it does, you're left with a broken heart that not even super glue can fix. That was my perception of love, but I still read it, hoping that not every person out there had a horrible love insight like I did.

I walked around the aisle some more, taking in the amazing smell that books gave off and with a few new books in my arms to read, I started walking back to my table. When I found my table, I took a seat, very slowly, trying to lessen the pain in my body. To pass the time I decided to take out my sketch pad, before I started drawing, I put my newfound books in my bag. I was completely unsure of what I was drawing but it was taking my mind away from the excruciating pain that coursed through my entire body. My attention got pulled away from my pain and the mysterious drawing in front of me; towards a couple arguing a few feet away.

I looked up from my paper and my eyes met with the guy who was arguing but I looked down too quickly to recognize him. In my attempt to not get caught eavesdropping; all my hair fell in my face and when I tried to move it away, I ended up slapping my bruised cheek. To make matters worse when I hissed out in pain, I drew the mystery guy's attention, towards me. This time when our eyes met, I didn't look away, I got lost in his eyes. They were like a blue abyss, and I could feel myself getting completely sucked into a bottomless pit.

"Ashton, freaking Stone!" Lilly screeched.

There was only one guy in this entire school with eyes so hypnotizing and that was Ashton Stone. Ashton and his entire band of misfits were incredibly handsome young men, but he was the only one with hypnotic eyes. Unfortunately for me, he broke the gaze between us and got back to his girlfriend, so I decided to continue listening-in on their argument.
"It's over!" Ashton exclaimed, rather loudly.
His girlfriend, Mia, whined. "But why baby?" she asked him. Mia started to caress his arm, and I huffed with irritation because her big head obstructed me from a clear view of Ashton's beautiful face. Ashton shook her arm off and took a step back, becoming clear in my view.

"I can't do this anymore woman, you're driving me nuts." He ran his hand through his dirty blonde hair, pulling it backwards, frustration evident on his face. Ashton's sparkling eyes drifted towards me with a dimpled smile in tow. It was like my body had a mind of its own and I started blushing like a schoolgirl on a sugar rush. I was definitely not the blushing kind of girl but for some unexplainable reason, Ashton just made it happen. What shocked me was the audacity he had to send me flirty smiles while he was breaking up with his girlfriend. The nerve of some guys!

"Oh loosen-up; he's just being friendly",
Lilly commented with a sly smile.

Instead of scolding her, I decided to leave her be and continue being a snoop. I moved my body closer to the edge of my seat and turned my head slightly to the left to hear them better. What Mia did next made me lose all the respect I had for her. "But I... I don't understand. Why? What did I do wrong Ashy?" she begged him for answers. I rolled my eyes shaking my head. No girl begs a guy for anything, not ever. There wasn't a single guy on this planet that I would ever beg for. Why would you stoop so low and let a guy see what hold he had over you?

"That's enough Mia!" Ashton demanded, glaring at her.

He realized he was talking much louder than he should have; he looked around to make sure people were not staring at them and moved closer to her, whispering the next part; luckily for me, I sat close enough. "We've been going out for over a month now and every time you see me talking to a girl you go crazy, blaming me for cheating on you." Ashton sighed, rubbing his hand over his face, clearly tired. "I can't even have girl friends without you trying to ruin their lives for just looking at me."

Mia opened her mouth to say something, but Ashton stopped her immediately. "I don't want to hear it. Just leave!" he pointed a finger at the door, indicating for her to go through it. He shook his head. "I'm sorry but I can't deal with you anymore." Mia bowled her fist and glared at him.
"This isn't over," she said, her voice cracking at the end. With the last word in the air, she stormed out of the library leaving a frowning Ashton behind. Who said nothing interesting ever happened in the library?

I looked away from my entertainment and focused back on the picture I was drawing. I tried figuring out what I was drawing but my mind was a bit distracted. I had mixed feelings about Mia. On the one hand, I was totally team Ashton because girls shouldn't be so clingy and suffocating. On the other hand, it looked like Mia really liked Ashton and maybe she liked him so much that she didn't want to lose him. Nonetheless, no girl should ever beg a guy to stay if he didn't want to, besides, there were plenty of fish in the sea.

A dark shadow fell over my paper, drawing me away from my train of thought. I stopped my pencil and contemplated looking up. On the inside though, I was begging for the owner to disappear. The chair in front of me got pulled out, scraping against the tiled floor. I took a deep breath, finally deciding to look up. My breath got caught in my throat and I found myself instantly drowning in the bluest blue. My pulse quickened, and my hands became sweaty and clammy. My throat felt as dry as the Sahara Desert and I suddenly ran out of a vocabulary. His looks had me in awe and wonder; completely speechless. Ashton Stone was a sight for sore eyes, and he definitely knew it.

"Hi," he said, smiling innocently.

I stared at him, unable to speak. It was kind-of funny, how I found one of the guys, who had been making my life a living hell for the past two years, attractive. So much so, that I couldn't even come up with an insult. So much so, that he had me blushing by just smiling at me. It had to be because of his boyish charm. He just had this innocent, cuddly persona that anyone would love.

"HI!" I stuttered out. I was probably staring at him for a few minutes and that's the best I could come up with. Absolutely ridiculous!

Ashton stared at me, folding his arms in front of his chest, revealing his muscular form. He looked about six inches taller than me and extremely well built; he must work out twenty-four-seven. I turned my head slightly to the right and inspected him some more, giving him time to do the same to me. It was the first time in two years that I had checked him out. I usually just glared towards him and his friends and inside my head I would throw a party of appreciation; dancing for joy at the beauty he had for eyes. I was glad that I just got this opportunity to stare at him because blue was definitely his colour.

"Do I know you?" Ashton asked, scratching his jaw. He had the looks and then he went and put his foot in his mouth and asked something as ridiculous as that. Now I had to be my usual sarcastic self and be rude to him.

"Do you honestly want me to believe that you don't recognize the girl that you and your friends have been bullying for the past two years?" I asked, glaring at him.

His face softened, showing regret for his actions. "I'm trying to make amends here. Throw a guy a bone, would you?" Ashton asked, hopefully.

I looked at him and contemplated forgiving him. He honestly did bully me the least, besides I had a feeling that I wouldn't be able to ignore his boyish charms. Who could? I gave him a simple nod and his entire face lit-up like a Christmas tree.

I tried to hide my smile by saying, "By the way, 'Do I know you' is not an apology." I pointed out.

Ashton smiled sheepishly and leaned forward. "I'm not good at those." He shrugged. "What are you drawing?" he asked, looking at my paper. I smiled and this time I let it slip through.
I looked at him and his eyes were filled with curiosity. He was so nosy; he reminded me of a little boy new to the world. I looked down at my drawing and found myself staring at Ashton's reflection. On my paper I had unknowingly drawn Ashton; his perfect wavy hair, sparkling eyes, and pink plum lips.
"Bags!" I swore, in embarrassment. I looked up and found him smirking at me. The smug look on his face had me blushing scarlet.
"I even look good on paper," he said, leaning back on his chair, folding his arms over his chest. Lilly wanted to agree with him, but I covered it up with an eye roll.
"You need to cool down your ego; it's in my personal space." I quipped, smugly.

Ashton grinned shaking his head; not taking my sarcasm into offence. I beamed with happiness; a guy that didn't mind my smart mouth. I looked at him and noticed how his posture hadn't changed once since he came to sit down. He was relaxed and laid back. His sense of humour was astounding and for a guy who just broke up with his girlfriend he sure seemed happy. Instead of asking him about it, I looked at the time and decided to start packing my things away. While putting my book away, my eyes caught sight of my class schedule, and I saw that I had math class next. I closed my bag and only left one book on the table for me to read. I sighed and slumped back into my chair, annoyed. Ashton startled me by clearing his throat.

"Why don't you like math?" he asked. I gave him a confused look; still startled because I momentarily forgot that he was still sitting there. He explained, "You mumbled 'stupid math' under your breath."
"Oh," I said, feeling like a complete idiot. "I like math; I just don't like some of the people attending the class."
"Who could possibly be so horrible to get on your bad side?"

When those words left Ashton's mouth my mind froze on images; of three annoyingly rude guys. There was one with coal-black hair and two blonde brothers who looked like twins but were a year apart. They are stupid hormonal boys who believe the world revolves around them and just because they're good-looking any girl will jump into their pants; no questions asked. They're incredibly stuck-up and throw money around hoping it could fix all their problems. Little do they know that money can't buy them a better personality, I ranted in my head.

"Damn you're feisty," Ashton said, pulling me back to reality. I wanted to ask him what he meant but he beat me to it. "Who knew that such a tiny little thing like yourself could have so much pent-up anger over three guys?" he asked, looking quite amused.

I groaned and banged my head on the table. "I just said all of that out loud, didn't I?"
"Yes!"
"Why didn't you stop me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "I just badmouth your friends and the look on your face is more of congratulations instead of I'm going to beat you up." Ashton chuckled and gave my hand an awkward pat.
"First of all, I don't hit girls; I'm offended that you think I would." He pouted. "Secondly, everyone has the right to an opinion; even if they are wrong." I rolled my eyes.
Ashton smiled. "I think you just need to get to know them, and then you might change your mind."
I scoffed, "I doubt it."

Ashton shook his head, his hair falling in front of his eyes. "So, would you like to get frozen yoghurt after school?" he asked, changing the subject. I looked around the library and saw that it was emptying out, which indicated that the first class was about to start. I looked at the time and realized that an entire half hour had passed since Ashton sat down and I didn't mind one bit. He really does grow on you.

"With you?" I asked, absentmindedly.
Ashton smirked, "No, with Michael." I glared at him, and he laughed.
"Didn't you just break up with your girlfriend?"
He shrugged. "Well, I'm heartbroken and you're good company."
I smiled at how cute he was. "Mmm, you're extremely sad; I can see the tears."
Ashton placed his hand over his heart and brushed a fake tear away. He looked so serious that I burst into a guffaw of laughter; the kind that made your stomach hurt and even though my entire body was already aching, and this was making it worse; I was enjoying it. Who knew that a boy like Ashton could make me feel better?

"So, is that a yes?" he asked, hopefully. "Just keep in mind that this is how you'll make it up to me for badmouthing my friends." he blackmailed.
I smiled slightly. "So much for free-will," I mumbled.
He playfully stuck his tongue out. "Free will is overrated."
"Fine," I agreed. "But I have work at three, so I won't stay long."
Ashton stood up and stretched his body. "It's fine; I'll even drop you off afterwards."I also stood up and fixed everything so I could leave it like I found it.
"Meet me at my car after school," he said and left the library. I didn't have time to answer him, so I just stayed quiet and cleaned up."Btw, you're quite cute when you're angry, Feisty." Ashton said, reappearing from behind the door. He blew me a kiss and disappeared behind the door again.

I smiled and shook my head; my heart filled with content for the first time in a few years. This boy was going to drive me crazy. Did he just dub me...Feisty? Why did I get the feeling that I was going to have to engrave my name on his car?

"Why do I get the feeling that your life just got more complicated from this point-forward?" Lilly asked.
