CHAPTER 17
(Edited)
'She sure was something, nothing like I remembered her,' James thought while parking the car into their garage.
At first, he was scared that Autumn would recognize him, and call him out, but luckily for him, she didnt. It took her a while to catch onto what he was doing, but at last, she finally did. She stood up for herself; something she used to struggle with when she was younger. Clearly, something made her change and thank goodness it was for the better.
James was both, content and worried that Autumn didnt recognize him; worried because he couldnt understand how she forgot him and content because he could talk to her without her run away from him. After almost two years of not seeing her, James heart shattered. He thought that he would be angry with her, scream at her, call her a coward; getting rid of so much repressed anger towards her, but he didnt. It felt like a breath of fresh air when he saw her. James couldnt believe when the boys told him that she didnt remember them, he had to see for himself; they werent lying.
James walked into the house and sighed happily, 'she only became more beautiful,' he thought. James could see that there was something wrong with her; he knew her better than she knew herself. There was pain behind her mesmerizing eyes, pain that only one would notice if they paid attention; she got good at hiding behind a mask.
'And she called me out on being fake,' James chuckled.
The reason behind Autumn misremembering them was something James needed to get working on he couldnt understand how she would forget them, it had to be something medical.
Honey, Im home, James yelled to know one in particular; knowing that the boys would be sitting in front of the television.
Halo my love, Shawn greeted him, batting his eyelashes.
James gagged and slapped him upside the head. Dont call me that.
Dustin chuckled at their antics and stood up from the couch to greet James properly; he was a bit shorter than James with brown curly hair falling messily on his face. His muscular figure was better built than both James and Shanes, even though he was younger. He was eighteen and Shane only a few months older than him. James was the oldest of the four; being twenty-one, his brother was nineteen, but the leader of the group.
How did it go? Shane asked James, referring to the meeting with Autumn.
He scratched his neck, nervously. Uhm, it went alright.
She handed your ass on a platter, didnt she? Shane smirked.
James rolled his eyes and sat down. Yes, she did. Feisty little girl.
Both Dustin and Shane bend forward from laughter, they couldnt stop. You owe me fifty bucks! Shane held his hand out to Dustin and smiled triumphantly.
Dustin groaned and swore under his breath. How did you know? He took money out of his wallet and paid him.
Ive known her longer than you; she might have moved, changed and forgotten us, but her personality will always be the same.
I dont get why I had to go though, shes mean, James groaned. Shane stopped the game and stood up stretching, showing off his muscles, his black hair falling in his eyes.
A long flat-screen television hung on the wall to Shawn's right and across from it a black leather couch that Dustin was occupying. Behind Shane was a single chair and James was sitting on the loveseat, in front of him. They lived in a two-story house, five boys in one house got a bit chaotic.
Look mate, you know, Autumn the best. You guys were the closest. Like two peace in a pod.
James looked at Shane, running a hand through his hair. But why didnt he go, they were dating, he knows her better?
Shane sighed and turned towards Dustin. Who did she always go to when he messed up? he asked.
James, Dustin answered.
To prove a point, Shane asked again, Who did she go to after a fight when she felt alone and broken?
James,
I can go on," Shane shrugged. Dude, you were always her go-to.
James sighed, defeated. I get it, it just, it sucked not being able to hold her and tell her how much we miss her."
Before James could tell them about what he saw in Autumn, Ryan walked in. His broad shoulders filled the doorway, he leaned against it, crossing his arms. James and Ryan looked quite similar, except James had blue eyes in comparison to Ryans brown ones. His hair was spread messily, over his face, his gun was sticking out at the back of his jeans with his white shirt slightly hiding it.
He ran his hands through his hair, pulling it up in the process. How did it go? Ryan asked calmly.
James groaned, internally, he didnt hate his brother, just the things that he did most of the times. He was glad that Ryan decided to take the lead in their group because he didnt really want that on his conscience. The thing that James did despise about his brother was the fact that Ryan blamed Autumn for everything wrong that happened since she left.
It went fine.
Ryan raised his eyebrows, challenging him. Would you like to elaborate?
Not really, James mumbled, but told him anyway, he knew his brother wouldnt stop until he told him everything. Autumn didnt tell me anything. She also said you should crawl back into the hole you came out of. James said with a slight smirk.
Ryan gasped, shock evident on his face. She remembers? The look on Ryans face made James want to laugh, but he held himself back.
Although she doesn't remember anything, she was aware that I tried to interrogate her. Somethings off though, she didnt show it willingly, but I noticed that she seemed in pain.
James thoughts wandered back to that morning; every time Autumn would laugh, she held onto her sides, she scrunched her face as if to keep herself from voicing out the discomfort. Ryan walked deeper into the room, standing closer towards James. His entire aura screamed authority, and when he got angry, he would even scare the boys. They weren't easily scared, that said something.
Pain? Ryan asked, his face showing no emotion.
He didnt really care, and that angered James. She loved him, and it didn't even matter to him. Dustin and Shane showed more emotion towards her than he did. Selfish prick! James clenched his fists, to keep himself from punching him.
Yeah, the kind of pain that you usually would get when you receive a beating.
Maybe shes fighting again. The boys said in unison. Dustin bit the inside of his lip he knew something was up but didn't mention it.
Ryan gritted his teeth. Whatever shes going through is well deserved, for leaving in the middle of the night like a snake, breaking promises she made. Shes probably throwing herself around because thats all shes good at. James snapped; jumping up from his position, he pushed Ryan against the wall with his forearm, shocking him.
Dont you dare talk about her like that, she must have had a reason. You didnt deserve her, and Im so glad she left your sorry ass, James yelled at him. He punched Ryan in his stomach, and he toppled over wheezing. Shane and Dustin ran towards James and grabbed him, holding him back.
Calm down, man, Dustin said. He knew that James would have beat Ryan up until he was unconscious, but he deserved it. She loved him, and he couldnt be bothered.
I hope you die alone! James puffed out, trying to break loose out of their grip. Ryan held onto the wall, standing up with some struggle.
She did have-
What is going on here? a voice interrupted him. A young boy stood next to Ryan, helping him up. His green eyes looked around the room, awaiting answers.
Your father is an ass, James stated in a heartbeat.
The young boy gave his father his signature look that screamed, 'what did you do'. Ryan shrugged and stayed quiet. James pulled himself loose and headed towards his bedroom, shooting his brother a glare. Before he got too far from them, he heard the green-eyed boy ask, if they had found her. His father said no, lying to him. James couldnt understand why they couldnt tell him the truth about Autumn. Why all the secrecy? James was confident about one thing, and that was that he would get to the bottom of it, and Autumn would see her son soon enough.
