My Top 20 Favourite Wrestlers of 2024:
Tastes change as time goes on throughout time, especially when it comes to wrestling, but I feel confident in what I've got written down here as being my top 20 wrestlers of 2024. Fair warning, this is not in any particular order compared to the previous page. And, I'll be honest, this could potentially be a multi-part one at some point if I choose to (for now it's a single part list), but I hope you like it regardless. This won't be including tag teams, as that could be a separate, albeit possibly shorter list later down the line.
Also, feel free to tell me who your favourite wrestlers for 2024 were. And, no, it doesn't have to be 20, I just picked a random number for this one.
Fair Warning: If this does become a multi-part list, I may not write why for those as the writing part is difficult for me, and it took me weeks to finish this one sadly. :(
#20: Session Moth - TNT Extreme Wrestling:
Okay, so Session Moth is one of 2 wrestlers that I remember from the TNT Extreme Wrestling show that I mentioned in the previous entry, with this entry - Session Moth - and the next entry- Lucy Sky - being the ones that come to mind first (the reason I don't remember more is because I'm really bad at remembering names, unless I've heard it, seen it written down or in front of me, and/or said it multiple times. It's something I'm open about when I talk with new people away from the computer and social media...when I'm confident enough to actually talk to someone, obviously).
To be honest, most of the TNT Extreme Wrestlers on the show I went to see in October very much would make this list, and if I ever figure out their names and I do a part 2 to this list, I will no doubt include them on the list.
In the case of the first 2 entries though: I really enjoyed their matches and their wrestling styles at the show, and they were both really nice as well. In Session's case, she got to main event the show I was at, which was the first title defence of her TNT Women's Championship against (and I had to look this up just as I was writing this, because, again, memory failed me on the name) Harley Hudson - who I found out through my brother and from a chat he had with Hudson when fans were getting pictures taken with the wrestlers that she (Hudson) was a part of TNA's UK tour shows in 2023. The more you know.
The match was short admittedly, but it was fun regardless, and a part of me liked the fact she was using "Everytime We Touch" by Cascada as her theme song. Plus she was a really nice person in the brief time I spoke with her before getting a picture with her. Sometimes it's the simplest things and reasons why I end up liking a wrestler.
#19: Lucy Sky - TNT Extreme Wrestling:
Lucy Sky took part in the second match of the afternoon at the Wrestlebox event, defending her TNT Ignition Women's Championship. I loved the match from top-to-bottom, and part of the reason I really liked the match was because their music didn't work for their entrances, so Sky's opponent came out to Triple H's "The Game" theme song instead, and Sky came out to Shane McMahon's theme song, and they both just went with it and had fun with the entrances and music as well, which me and my brother both found funny, but also really appreciated them just having fun with the music problem.
Again, sometimes it's the simple things that I like.
#18: Becky Lynch - WWE:
When it comes to WWE's "Four Horsewomen", Becky and a certain former "Doctor of Hugganomics" (as she once called herself) are easily and without a seconds thought my favourite "Four Horsewomen" out of the 4, even if I don't mind Flair and Banks/Mone all that much too be fair.
Sadly, Becky hasn't spent much of the year wrestling, as she would leave WWE following the main event of the Raw after King & Queen of the Ring 2024, and has stayed away from the ring since then. And to be honest? I completely get it. And if there's anyone that has earnt a rest from carrying the Women's Division for lord knows how long now, it's "The Man" Becky Lynch. (It's fine if you're not a fan of hers by the way, we're all different in who we like).
The highlights of her brief few months in 2024 include her Wrestlemania 40 Night 1 opening match with then Women's World Champion Rhea Ripley - with "The Man" reportedly wrestling whilst having a very high fever, and Rhea not long after having a panic attack, and yet both put on an amazing match with each other regardless! A testament to them and their fortitude/commitment to their craft - and winning her 5th Women's World Championship (formerly the Smackdown Women's Championship for the 4 previous times she'd held the belt previously).
Some people weren't a fan of Becky winning Rhea's vacant title, and that Liv should have won it at the time, but I was all for it honestly. I didn't think Becky would hold the belt for long admittedly, and I had in the back of my mind that she was probably going to be a transitional champion (which was proven right weeks later), but to me it made sense for Liv to beat Becky to win the title at King & Queen of the Ring. Plus, given that Becky left not long after losing the title, it was nice to see Becky hold a title again for a brief time before she departed the company.
Hopefully Lynch is enjoying her time off, and hopefully we'll see her in the ring again at some point in the future.
#17: Liv Morgan - WWE:
I will say that I wasn't completely a fan of the Liv and Dom stuff half the time, but even that had its moments for me, and I think WWE has gone to the Rhea vs. Liv well maybe once too often this year: But despite all that, I've really enjoyed Liv Morgan's year in WWE this year, and seeing her really get to show her stuff as an annoying and desperate/scheming heel and getting to hold the keys to the metaphorical tower as Women's World Champion this year has been rather enjoyable.
Now, yes, I do see where people come from when they say that live holding the title for as long as she had with as little title defences as she's had has hurt the Women's division for Raw somewhat...and if I'm being completely honest, I don't think her association with "The Judgment Day" has been a good thing for either side, nor has her bringing Raquel Rodriquez back as her bodyguard really helped Raquel...but her heel work, her improvements on the mic and as a hateable character over this past year, and the fact she's - at the very least - being booked 10 times better than her initial Smackdown Women's Championship title reign from 2 years prior: It shows that WWE has, at the very least, learnt from their mistakes made in the past 2 years with Liv's booking post-Money In The Bank 2022, and she's become someone that the promotion is at least getting behind, and I'm all for it.
Also, I have to say her little mini-feud with Nia Jax and Tiffany Stratton leading up to Crown Jewel, as well as her on-and-off feud with Becky Lynch early this year, were things that I rather enjoyed, which might have partly helped in why Liv has been one of my favourite female wrestlers for WWE this year.
#16: Jon Moxley - AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling:
I will say this before I start: I had put Moxley on this list here, I think, before Moxley had won the AEW World Championship for the 4th time, or before he faced Orange Cassidy for the title at Full Gear, I can't recall which was the case. But either way, Moxley was always going to be in my personal top 20 regardless, if in large part due to his work with New Japan (and somewhat in AEW) as the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion this year.
I for one didn't expect Moxley to walk out with the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship when he faced off against Tetsuya Naito this year. I assumed that he was going to be a sort of token title defence for Naito - a strong defence, but not one that would have led to a title change perhaps - but I was still pleasantly surprised to learn that Moxley won the belt regardless.
I assume that not everyone was okay with the title reign, but I was a fan of it, and I thought that the belt looked rather good on Moxley.
I will say that I think his current gimmick has had its moments, and I wasn't against Moxley winning the AEW World Championship from Bryan Danielson (I didn't think he'd win it so soon), but for me the earlier run with the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship was enough for me to secure him on the list. And to be fair, I've always been a fan of Moxley. Whether he was as Dean Ambrose or Jon Moxley.
#15: "Timeless" Toni Storm - AEW:
I will start this entry by saying that I had this format and list sorted out before Toni Storm retired the "Timeless" Toni Storm gimmick, and returned to being her OG self on the December 11th 2024 episode of Dynamite. Either way, though, I still would have Storm on this list, as "Timeless" Toni Storm has been a large part of my enjoyment with AEW, or one of the acts that I enjoyed about AEW to be honest, in large part due to the gimmick itself and the world and characters she built around the gimmick with Luther, Mariah May, Thunder Rosa, and Mina Shurikawa.
I was probably one of the large majority of people that just didn't know what to make of the gimmick at first in 2023, but it grew on me a lot in 2024, and it's a shame it came an end after over a year, but I'm glad Storm got to have some fun with the gimmick.
Here's hoping the company doesn't drop the ball with Storm, but we'll just have to wait and see.
#14: Cody Rhodes - WWE:
I'll be honest, Cody's position on this list is more of a symptom of Cody as a character sort of...souring on me a little, if I'm going to be brutally honest. Largely in part due to his feud with "The Bloodline" during the summer and autumn, him winning the Crown Jewel Championship over Walter, and I'll be honest, him retaining the title on a couple of occasions where the champion probably should have won (admittedly this is a more recent nit-pick because I was rooting for Kevin Owens to win the belt).
That being said, I do still very much enjoy Cody Rhodes's matches for the most part - especially his matches with AJ Styles - and I did somewhat enjoy the Wrestlemania build-up and both main event matches for Wrestlemania 40 this year, and Cody has still had a rather good reign as WWE Champion this year. He's still one of my quiet favourites, and I feel I had to mention him, but there are others higher on the list.
#13: Will Ospreay - New Japan Pro-Wrestling and AEW:
Will Ospreay, like another entry on this like, is someone who quickly became someone I gravitated towards and became a fan of very quickly (around 2017 to be exact, which was when I first heard about him via WCPW/Defiant Wrestling), and honestly it hasn't changed since. He was easily one of my favourite Gaijin wrestlers in New Japan not named Kenny Omega and some of my favourite matches in New Japan often usually involve "The Aerial Assassin/Commonwealth Kingpin". And a number of any non-New Japan matches too, to be fair.
Is Ospreay the best promo? In AEW, I think that's subjective honestly. I always enjoyed his promos and backstage promos/interviews in New Japan personally, but I will admit his promos in AEW don't always connect with me as they did in New Japan. With that being said...yeah, he's still one of the best fucking wrestlers in the world, and I still have a hell of a fun time watching his matches.
And you know what? He also gets bonus points on this list for the fact that - according to reports anyway - apparently he pushed for the match with Swerve so that he could be taken out of the conversation in regards of the AEW World title scene for the time being, and to help put Swerve over as the top guy. There's probably more to that than I gave away there or that we know, but if that is true regardless, then it does make me respect Ospreay more because it's clear he just gets it in this instance, you know?
What are your thoughts on Will Ospreay? Or his whole year as a whole?
#12: Zack Sabre Jr. - New Japan Pro-Wrestling:
Zack Sabre Jr. is someone who I've grown to like and respect a lot as time has gone on over the years in New Japan. Probably helps that he's a fellow Brit, but to be honest that very rarely comes into consideration as to why I like a wrestler.
I loved the entire year last year when Zack held the NJPW World Television Championship, and whilst I think his title reign ended in a bit of an anticlimactic match and way at Wrestle Kingdom this year, 1 year to the day after becoming the inaugural NJPW World TV Champion, I don't think it did ZSJ any harm, and has gone on since to reclaim the title just over 3 months later from Matt Riddle, despite ZSJ only holding the belt this time for 3 weeks before dropping it to Jeff Cobb, and - most importantly of all - won this years G1 Climax Tournament and the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship within months apart from each other.
Seeing Zack Sabre Jr. finally getting the keys to the kingdom by winning the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship from Tetsuya Naito this year was a long time coming - and something many New Japan followers would no doubt say was long overdue - and it's great that he's finally getting a title reign after all of his hard work.
#11: Joe Hendry - TNA and NXT:
All I will say about this entry is this: Yes, I do believe in Joe Hendry. (I have no regrets!)
#10: Damian Priest - WWE:
Damian Priest has been something of a quiet favourite of mine in WWE since his time in NXT. But I think his time in "The Judgment Day", as well as his run in 2024, has made me respect him and enjoy his character more in WWE this past year.
His World Heavyweight Championship reign wasn't always full of bright spots, but I think he had a solid enough run with the World Heavyweight Championship that - whilst admittedly, probably would have been better had he turned Face sooner into the reign - at the very least helped him evolve even more as a character and - hopefully - has impressed enough to make him a main eventer full time.
I will admit, however, that his rather...lackluster...feud with Walter building up to Survivor Series did slightly hurt his overall ranking (even if most of these are randomly placed), but I don't think it did enough to hurt him really. At least not in my mind. Maybe you all feel differently, and I'll respect that.
#9: Rhea Ripley - WWE:
Maybe this is a cliché to put to Rhea Ripley on my list, given her popularity as a whole within the wrestling community: But for me, her placing at #9 is - like with Cody and Jon Moxley before her in this list - is more a fixed entry for me and also a case of injuries and, at times, some not-so-great booking choices rather hurting Rhea this year, even despite her popularity.
Admittedly, having her feud with Liv Morgan for most of her time on the roster this year since she got back from her first injury hasn't helped either, but I still rather enjoy Ripley, and I think that's overall due to her presence and the aura that she carries...And, admittedly, her chemistry with her fellow "Terror Twin" Damian Priest, and with Jey Uso. What can I say, I find Rhea's and Jey's interactions funny and entertaining.
Plus, as I think I alluded to in Becky Lynch's entry, I feel like I had more respect for Ripley after Wrestlemania for being able to perform to as high of a level as she and Becky did at Wrestlemania 40 Night 1 after having a panic attack. It made me feel so bad for Rhea having to go through something like that before her big match, and made me respect her more.
Hopefully she can put the feud with Liv to bed for a while sooner rather than later, and move on to something different. Maybe challenge for the World Tag titles with Damian Priest? (Unlikely, but I'd want to see it).
#8: Shingo Takagi - New Japan Pro-Wrestling:
As stated in the Will Ospreay entry: Shingo Takagi is one of 2 wrestlers this year who, for me at least, has remained consistently excellent and enjoyable for me this year. Whilst he may not have had a chance to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship this year (as far as I remember, though please do correct me if I have got this wrong and am forgetting something), he's certainly gone on to make the NEVER Openweight Championship (my favourite title in New Japan) something to fight for this year as he did in 2020 and early 2021 in pursuit of, and in winning/defending, the NEVER Openweight Championship this year.
I rarely never enjoy a match Shingo Takagi is in, and I would make the argument that at this point Shingo is becoming as synonymous with the NEVER title as the likes of Tomohiro Ishii, Hirooki Goto, and Togi Makabe were/are with the belt.
Do I hope that I "The Dragon" gets a chance to another top title in the future in New Japan, or another singles title in general? Of course I do. But like Tomohiro Ishii, I don't think you can go wrong with putting the NEVER belt on Shingo.
#7: Tiffany Stratton - WWE:
A rather surprising entry for me personally, as Tiffany Stratton wasn't somebody who was known to me until she won the NXT Women's Championship in 2023, but is someone who has continued to evolve and impress me somewhat gradually over time since that moment.
She hasn't been perfect this year, and I do question some of WWE's booking decisions with Stratton this year since she won the Women's Money In The Bank Briefcase this year (although to be honest, it's been A+ material when compared to how they used the Men's Money In The Bank Briefcase to me personally...), but I can't say I've had any moment this year where I haven't in some way had a laugh or enjoyed Stratton on screen in some capacity.
I've liked her team-up/partnership with Nia Jax this year; I've enjoyed some of her interactions with the likes of Adam Pierce, Bayley, Liv Morgan and Dominik Mysterio, etc.; I liked the brief one-off team-up she had with Rhea Ripley against Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriquez on that one episode of Raw this year (it was a rare case where I agreed with some of the commentors on YouTube, because the strange pairing kind of works and was rather funny for the brief time it lasted)...
Yeah, not much more I can say about it really. Though here's hoping they use her eventual cash-in well, and don't screw it up with a failed cash-in. Have her cash in on Nia at some point (maybe at Wrestlemania possibly), and have them finally clash and feud with one-another.
#6: Moose - TNA:
For me, Moose has been one of the MVP's of TNA both throughout 2024 with everything going on, and quietly throughout most of the company's time as Impact Wrestling as well. But personally, I think that his run as TNA World Heavyweight Champion (his 2nd official reign, fun fact, because he held the Impact World Championship in-between both of Josh Alexander's Impact World Championship reigns) and as TNA X-Division Champion this year has probably been his best work in the company and as champion since his run with the Impact Grand Championship and when he was claiming to be the TNA World Championship in the pandemic.
Throughout the year, he's had some pretty good to great to excellent matches over both titles this year with a variety of different opponents, whether he was challenger or champion, and Moose himself carries himself extremely well in the matches and sells everything so well that it plays into the matches itself and it's so perfect and helps me enjoy the matches even more.
I know people do sleep on TNA/Impact and on Moose as a wrestler, but if you ever have the time, I would recommend looking up his matches with Alex Shelly, Kushida, and - if it's something that interests you - his "Broken Rules" match with "Broken" Matt Hardy. Just to name 4 matches that I really like from this year.
#5: Oba Femi - NXT:
Oba Femi is - to me at least, and probably to you as well - the perfect example of NXT making a star out of someone relatively unknown (even more so in my case, because I hadn't heard of Oba Femi prior to 2023), and make them a star by accentuating and focussing on their strengths and positives. And in the case of Oba Femi, he feels like NXT's biggest success story so far in the last year+. (It's fine if you disagree on this one).
Femi carries himself exceptionally well, and he's treated as the threat that he and NXT has built himself up as in the last year, and he's had numerous outstanding matches over the NXT North American Championship over this past year too.
Do I see him winning the NXT Championship in the near future after his win in the Iron Survival match? Oh absolutely! I think it's more a case of when he'll the NXT Championship than if he wins it. To be honest - baring any major booking screw-ups whenever he goes to the main roster - I could easily see Femi going after the WWE or World Heavyweight Championships whenever he does go to the main roster.
What's your opinion on Oba Femi? I'm rather curious.
#4: Willow Nightingale - AEW and CMLL:
The best way I can describe what makes Willow Nightingale appear on this list is more down to her booking, and how infectiously likeable she's been as a face/how likeable she's been in general since both appearing in AEW, and since I first heard her name and saw some of her matches in the tournament to crown the inaugural NJPW Strong Openweight Women's Champion in 2023.
Seeing Nightingale get a well earned push in both AEW as the TBS Champion and in CMLL as the CMLL Women's Champion (even despite both reigns being short and transitional by nature), and continue to impress in the ring with pretty much whoever she's been in the ring with has been nothing short of enjoyable, and here's hoping she continues to achieve more success in 2025 and in the future.
#3: Mariah May - AEW:
Right from the off, I have to say that I feel that most of the reason she's on here is her entire long-term story with "Timeless" Toni Storm throughout the year, and even admittedly in 2023 as well. I really enjoyed it and her interactions/matches whilst she was either allied with or against Storm.
Has her title reign lived up to the build and story told leading up to the win at All In 2024? That's not for me to decide. It's not my right to judge to be honest. All I will say is that I don't think it's been the big flop that many online have called it. It's just that her reign has lacked the right foes to face or builds to make it more enjoyable.
Still, even that does nothing to diminish her aura personally or the great year she's had in 2024, in large part admittedly due to her former allies and dance partner. I do feel that she can grow more as a character and as a performer, she just needs more time, but she's still one of my quiet favourite wrestlers in AEW.
#2: Bayley - WWE:
Okay, no word of a lie, #1 and #2 are here because they are my 2 favourites of the year period. I regret nothing!
I've always been a massive Bayley fan, ever since I first saw her on a clip on Youtube during her NXT Women's Championship days, and to be honest my fandom for Bayley hasn't really diminished since. If anything, it only increased more after her additional heel turn in 2019 (where she ruthlessly killed the Inflatable Tube Men). Really, any frustrations I may have had in regards to Bayley, are more aimed at creative and how she may have been misused over the years - either by you-know-who, or in the early days of "Damage CTRL's" run.
Now, has she had a perfect year? No, not entirely. But even so, she's had a pretty strong year none-the-less. She's often come across as strongly booked since winning the Women's Championship from Iyo Sky, and
#1: Jey Uso - WWE:
For me, it was an easy pick for the number 1 spot on my personal list. Jey Uso has really become quite the fan favourite since he left "The Bloodline", and whilst I've never fully taken to the whole "Yeet!" thing, and it did take a while for Jey to finally win his first singles title, I've rather enjoyed all of Jey's backstage skits and promos - especially with Damian Priest, Rhea Ripley, and members of both "The Judgment Day" and "The Bloodline" (both versions).
Jey winning the Intercontinental Championship was a very shocking moment that, honestly, I still look back on rather fondly this year. It didn't last long, sadly, but as short title reigns go, I feel Jey's title run was a good one, like Darby Allin's 2nd AEW TNT title reign was in 2023 (at least in my opinion). And the fact he's not been afraid to step up to both Roman Reigns and Solo's version of "The Bloodline" really helped when they teased him helping Roman and Jimmy this year.
I'd like to imagine that Jey could win his first World Championship in the near future. And maybe I'd like to see him teaming up with Priest and Ripley more in the future as well. But even if that's not in the cards, it's nice to imagine it, and we can enjoy that he's a Bonafede singles star now, courtesy of his IC title win.
Who's your favourite wrestlers for 2024?
