10 Title Wins That Annoyed Me Or Mad Me Mad:
For every title win that fans react positively to or rejoice about, there are title wins that either make us equally baffled, annoyed, or mad, depending on who has won what title, how a title reign began and ended, and/or just the situation or circumstances surrounding the title win in particular.
For this entry, you will be seeing which title wins annoyed me or made mad (though I'll be honest, most of these entries simply only annoyed me at most, and in the case of 1 anomaly of an entry that you will see here, made me annoyed but in a good way). Though please note that this doesn't necessarily reflect my opinions on certain wrestlers, unless otherwise stated in the entry themselves...and fair warning, I do go off on a rant at the end, and I'm sorry for that because I hated writing it...
#10: Bron Breakker - WWE Intercontinental Championship [2nd Reign]:
This entry is more of a case of me being annoyed with the booking of Bron Breakker on the main roster, and the whole "Bloodline" 2.0 interference annoying me than the actual moment or title win itself, and really it shouldn't have surprised me as much as it did after Jey Uso's confrontation with Solo Sakoa's version of "The Bloodline" the prior week to this title switch, but...yeah...
Now, as you will see in my "10 Title Wins That Surprised Me" file, I actually liked Jey winning the IC title. In fact it took the #1 spot for a reason (spoiler alert if you are reading this out of order). However, I feel bad that Bron has been booked so inconsistently on the main roster since he went after the IC title back in the summer, especially in the weeks and months following his loss to Jey Uso.
It really feels like WWE did a misstep in how they've been booking Bron lately, which is a shame because I can see his potential as a future world champion, but the booking of Bron since losing his first IC title has left a lot to be desired for me personally.
#9: "A-Town Down Under" Austin Theory and Grayson Waller - WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championships/WWE Tag Team Championships:
I will be open with you here: I have never got the apply of either Grayson Waller or Austin Theory. In Theory's case, he can sort of be excused a little because my view on him is somewhat more skewed because of his poor 2nd US title reign, and - to me at least - a rather unremarkable time in "The Way" in NXT.
Grayson Waller though? I've never understood what he's meant to be beyond "the annoying guy you want to see get his arse kicked", or "a walking stereotype". I've tried to understand why people like him, and I'm just not seeing it. And that's really somewhat skewed how I see "A-Town-Down-Under". A team with moments of occasional hilarity, but otherwise a team that I often forget exist, and sigh in exasperation at whenever I do see, which I feel is completely unaware to the two of them as well. I feel bad that I just don't get them and that's led me to really rather resenting the team, but I just can't help it.
So imagine my annoyance and bafflement when I see a post at work, hours before I watch Night 1 of Wrestlemania the day after it aired (I had work on the Sunday and Monday and they both aired around Midnight my time, so I couldn't watch Wrestlemania the nights that they aired), and when I see it happen in the ladder match for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships.
"A-Town-Down-Under" were probably the least likeliest of teams in my mind to win any of the tag titles, never mind both sets (I didn't think the belts were being split), so it was just so confusing when they did win. I'm glad that "The Awesome Truth" were the ones to unhook the Raw Tag Team titles and finish the match, because otherwise I think it would have just deflated me a little had it been the other way around...or, at the very least, confuse me to the point of questioning what I was seeing...Probably more the latter than the former the more I think about it....
#8: "The Young Bucks" Matthew and Nicholas Jackson - AEW World Tag Team Championships:
Okay, so truth of the matter here is that this one is more on the list to fill things out. It did slightly annoy me at the time when "The Young Bucks" won the AEW Tag Team Championships not too long after Sting and Darby Allin had retained and relinquished them after Sting's retirement match at Revolution 2024, but I think it also somewhat annoyed me that AEW went down the more obvious route...It did, admittedly, also make sense that they won the belts, given Okada had won the Continental Championship not too many weeks prior to this win...Sooo...yeah...Sorry if this entry feels deflating for some.
#7: Mercedes Mone - NJPW Strong Openweight Women's Championship/NJPW Strong Women's Championship:
Quick note here: Mone's AEW TBS Championship title win is not on here, because I didn't mind it to be honest. I kind of figured it was going to happen, but I wasn't entirely against it as I thought it could be a way to help her get over in AEW, whilst also adding some more prestige to the title - even if it may have been in name value alone to some.
Now, in terms of Mercedes winning New Japan Pro-Wrestling's NJPW Strong Openweight Women's Championship very quickly after at the following pay-per-view event, Forbidden Door? That's another story.
To me, it felt like Mercedes was winning the title far too soon - even if, with the power of hindsight, it was probably the right move, given the former champ, Stephanie Vaquer, going to NXT not too long after the loss - and for me I feel like it would have made more sense for Mercedes to focus on her TBS Championship first and foremost, and go after the Strong title at a later date. So Mercedes winning it so soon after winning the TBS Championship slightly irked and annoyed me a bit.
#6: Cody Rhodes - Crown Jewel Championship:
Speaking of double champions: I have to say, I wasn't much of a fan of Cody beating Walter to win the Crown Jewel Championship. (If you've seen my entry on my favourite wrestling shows of the year, you'll know why I'm writing Walter as Walter and not Gunther). It didn't make me mad at all, it just felt rather annoying that Walter wasn't given the big win when he could have arguably used it here. And if the build-up to the World Heavyweight Championship title defence at Survivor Series WarGames 2024 was anything to go by, it kind of proves my point really...
Cody I feel is - like with guys like AJ Styles and Roman Reigns - at a point in his career where big loses can't really harm him, and to be honest he has gotten a little bit stale somewhat since his feud with Solo Sakoa over the Undisputed WWE Championship in the summer and autumn. Or at the very least his popularity has somewhat cooled off since then, if "gotten a little bit stale" isn't the right term here.
The loss could have helped Cody a bit here with him losing to "The Ring General", and the win could have further established Walter's dominance in WWE. Something that he has somewhat had watered down a little since winning the World Heavyweight Championship from Damian Priest it feels.
Maybe you feel differently about this, and that's fine. It's just something I wanted to speak about.
#5: "The Bloodline" 2.0's Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu - WWE Tag Team Championships (fka the Undisputed WWE Tag Team/WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championships):
This one is here because it did annoy me slightly, but the title win was more of a case of a title win that annoyed me for the right reasons, and secretly also surprised and impressed me as well, if that makes any sense.
It annoyed me to see "The Bloodline" end the title reign of "DIY" so soon after the latter team had taken the belts off of "A-Town-Down-Under", and that "DIY" didn't get a longer run with these tag titles...but it also made sense to me as well to put the tag titles on "The Bloodline" at some point, and hey, I smiled as well a little at seeing Tama Tonga with a tag title in WWE (I've been a fan of "Guerrillas of Destiny", Tama Tanga and Tonga Loa, since their New Japan days, in case anybody needs to know why), and seeing the utterly badass way that Jacob Fatu no sold Gargano's "Reverse Poisonrana" and hit him with 4 back-to-back moves to win the belts stunned me at the time.
"The Bloodline" stuff might not interest me as much as it did in 2022 and early 2023 (pre-Wrestlemania 39 Night 2), and seeing "The Bloodline" win title gold in their possession may have annoyed me to a degree, but it annoyed me for the right reasons, and that - in a way - made me respect the decision more really as well.
#4: Alberto El Patron - AAA Mega Championship:
This one borders into me getting getting mad, but it is on the "so annoying it enters me hating it" category (so much so that I deliberately chose not to use a picture for him with the belt), and the reason for that is because...well, it's - as Wrestletalk dub him - "Notable Prick" Alberto Del Rio...And because he beat Nic Nemeth to win the title when honestly probably anyone else would have sufficed!
#3: MJF - AEW International Championship/AEW American Championship:
Now we're entering the "made me mad" territory of title wins...which, granted, is just the last 3 entries, and I'm certain I've annoyed or angered MJF and/or AEW fans with this entry in particular, but I stick with my choices. To be honest, this one and the next 2 were the easiest choices for this list for me personally.
If you want to know why this is the case, or why I'm not a fan of MJF, then please read my list of 10 least favourite wrestlers after this, because I don't want to upset anyone else here than I probably already have once or twice. All I can say is that if Ospreay had retained the International title via a time limit draw, I don't think I would have gotten so frustrated with the ending to Ospreay and MJF's first match on Dynamite (most of the matches of Ospreay's I've seen this year, outside of All In 2024, have been on YouTube sadly), because it would have been another excellent defence for Ospreay's first AEW International Championship reign...
However, MJF did win, and with about a second or 2 before the time limit expired...and I just remember being utterly furious about it.
I will confess that I, as the weeks went on, I didn't mind so much MJF holding the title, even if him introducing his custom made AEW American Championship made me slightly facepalm a bit, and I think that's because I figured out fairly quickly after that the title reign was probably only happening as a means to give Ospreay another big win in the UK for All In (which, to be fair, it did just that, especially for this Brit writing this), and for that purpose alone...and this is hard for me admit...I respect and sort of...admire...that decision...
It doesn't change how the title reign made me feel at the time, and it didn't help me enjoy MJF any more than other attempts by AEW have tried to...but I can respect and admire that it was done intentionally for a reason, and possibly to annoy the haters of MJF.
#2: Chris Jericho - FTW Championship:
And now we enter the "Chris Jericho de-appreciation entry" portion of the list...Lord help us...
Whilst not as egregious as the next entry in the list: I can say whole heartedly that when I heard on Cultaholic's review of the show where Jericho won the FTW Championship from Hook, I was mentally questioning the decision and wondering why in the hell AEW wouldn't give Hook a big win and just move on to the next challenger.
With the power of hindsight, this title reign was really the death note for the poor FTW Championship, as Jericho holding the title did nothing to elevate the title or Hook's standing in the company.
It may have had moments, but the reign wasn't great, and the feud with Hook just didn't click or help anyone, least of all Hook.
And this entry leads over to.....
#1: Chris Jericho - ROH World Championship [2nd Reign]:
...the "Chris Jericho de-appreciation entry part 2: This time it's fucking stupid!"
The Ring of Honor brand as a whole under Tony Khan and AEW's banner and watch has been something of a mixed bag for me personally, as it's lead to some fantastic champions in Samoa Joe's record breaking "King of Television" ROH World Television Championship run of 2022 and 2023 - even if, admittedly and arguably, it did only start getting good after Joe won his first AEW TNT Championship - , Athena's record breaking/record smashing ROH Women's World Championship title reign, and surprising title wins from the likes of Kyle Fletcher's ROH World Television title win, and Claudio Castagnoli's, Eddie Kingston's, and Mark Briscoe's ROH World Championship title wins.
However, for all the nice things that have come from Tony Khan owning Ring of Honor and allowing ROH titles and stars to appear and/or defend their titles on AEW TV alongside ROH, there have been a number of things about it that has annoyed me or made me facepalm.
This title win though? It not only made me facepalm, but also made me quite angry and annoyed at the same time.
First off: Why did Jericho have to win the match and the title!?! Why couldn't you keep the belt on Briscoe, who - at least I felt - needed the belt more than Jericho!? Why did you have to ruin a really great match with such a backwards decision that has - from what I've seen and heard - been almost universally panned and bashed on!? Why was Chris Jericho the one to take the title off of Mark Briscoe!? Why did this thought even get greenlit!?
*sighs* God this is making me feel less like me with each passing second.....
Look, if Big Bill had been the one to challenge for the title instead of Jericho and had won the belt, I don't think I would be nearly as aggravated with this as I am. Hell, I'd have been happy had Big Bill been the one to challenge Briscoe and win the belt! And I will say that the Ladder Wars match between Mark Briscoe and Chris Jericho was a great match: But the finish to the match deflated me like a lead balloon, and I was watching it on my phone on YouTube by the way on a day I was working, so that didn't make my time at work any better!
Jericho is at a point in his career where fans are sick and tired of seeing him, and are not invested or into whatever he's doing currently: So putting a World title on Jericho at this point in his career, not too long after he dropped the FTW Championship back to Hook shortly before the belt was deactivated again, was not a good move, and it feels like it's another example that AEW's writing and creative team has run dry of good ideas, in a year that had plenty of examples of that.
And if this is just a power move on Tony Khan's part to try and get a new TV deal/TV slot for Ring of Honor, then why isn't Jericho appearing more often on ROH tapings and, you know, actually defending the title on matches in ROH, or competing in matches for said brand?
Having Jericho only fight on AEW television and only defending the title on AEW shows doesn't help Ring of Honor in the long-run, nor does it elevate any of the talent on ROH that might want to fight for the title, and if what we're being told is true, and what we've seen with the FTW title under his tenure is anything to prove: Jericho having the ROH World Championship only hurts the value of the title more than it already has been since AEW bought the rights to ROH, and Jericho hasn't been anything of a draw on AEW lately this year, so him holding the title further makes the reign more damaging.
I really hope that this doesn't come across as me being petty or getting overly mad at something beyond my control - because, let's face it, who cares about my opinion in wrestling in the grand scheme of things. But I can't be the only one who got mad about Jericho winning the ROH World title and thinking "Have AEW done a Goldberg?", and not the positive kind of that comparison by the way.
*sighs*
