Chapter Seven: Escape! Keep Moving!
The two teens stayed silent, the only thing they could do in that moment is watch the monster as it peers closer. As soon as Jiyoung could lift her gun, Hyun beats her to the punch, lifting his revamped weapon and puncturing its chest. The knife attached poked its skin and impaled it ever so lightly.
"Uh..." The creature barely affected made no movement and just as Jiyoung puts her finger to the trigger, BZZT. Hyun presses the button, electrocuting the sightless monster. The monster screeches out loud, falling back in the shock.
Hyun grabs Jiyoung by the hand and rushes out of the elevator with her on his toes. Their shoes tapped against the floors, no matter how quiet they wished to be. Rushing out did not give them the silence they so desperately needed. Jiyoung looks back, her eyes catching how the monster stills itself, it's arm raising
Whirr.
Its arm stretches out towards the two, whooshing past them as Jiyoung pushes Hyun to the ground. She barely covers his back as she lay on him, the arm barely missing her. The sound of its arm crashing into the wall makes the girl flinch. She watches in horror as its arm continues to grow even more dangerous, spikes growing from it, stretching across the whole hall. She manages to hold back her gasp and grimaces at the sight. She feels Hyun's hand pull her back as she sits behind him against the wall.
Around the corner, the monster is still on their tail with its own goal in mind. "Whe...re... a..re you..."
Slowly, Hyun pulls out a bottle in his hand, his eyes still trained on the monster. Jiyoung could barely grasp the next moments as all she could feel was her heart beating quickly in her chest. She felt if it beat any harder, the monster would hear it and find them. Yet, Hyun still managed to rush up from the corner, weapon in hand and target acquired.
Your father would find you pathetic, just sitting there helpless.
Jiyoung's eyes slowly and shakily move from their view of the ground to in front of her. A ghostly white figure that was identical to her stood there expressionless. Yet had all the worst things to tell her. It got closer to her and she fought hard to keep tears from her eyes.
You stole something and you don't even have the guts to use it, do you? Instead of leaving it where it would be needed. Weren't you trying to teach them a lesson? That they didn't need violence in the home?
Jiyoung clutches the gun in her hand tightly, somehow bringing her back to the ground after floating up in a guilty sky.
"I just wanted to help," she says in barely a whisper. She closes her eyes, putting her hands over her ears.
"Jiyoung?" The sound of her name causes her to move on the floor and connect eyes with Hyun. "Let's get going." Jiyoung shakes her head from her thoughts to see Hyun staring at her with his hand out to her. He didn't say anything about her sudden shift in emotion or her whispers that she was sure made her sound insane. A frown came onto her face but she took his hand and stood up, the two of them quietly making their way towards the staircase.
As soon as the door clicked and they were left in the darkness of the staircase, Hyun dropped to his knees.
"Hyun?" She places a hand on his shoulder and bends down to his level. Her knees bent and she tried to look him on the eyes. "Are you okay?" What are you stupid? Jiyoung thought to herself, of course he wasn't okay.
You're useless. The voice rang in her head but she shook her head slightly, shaking him. "We have to keep moving, Hyun."
Hyun knew she was right. He couldn't stop now. They just barely made it through and they still had to get to the kids. He had to keep going for all of them. His legs regain their strength, Hyun moving up from his spot on the ground and stopping at the top of the stairs. The thought ran through both of their minds. The lights were out, the staircase would be dark without their own light. That didn't stop him as he turns the flashlight on his phone, continuing down the stairs until he freezes on the steps. Jiyoung rushes to his aid, but finds nothing wrong. The girl stood next to him, waving a hand across his face.
Jiyoung steps in front of him trying to catch his attention and draw him away from what was getting to him but all he did was look to his shoulder, the throbbing in his own head increasing. "Hyun?" Her voice was drowned out by the incessant figure beside him. The ghostly white figure that looked like him, wasn't seen by Jiyoung, but it was all Hyun could focus on. Jiyoung and her own body was no longer a presence there but harsh words and the blank expression on the white figure. "Hyun, we have to go, please."
After a moment of silence and Hyun's widened eyes looking beside him, they cast down to the steps, ignoring her and speaking to himself.
"...It wasn't my fault in the beginning.... I was not that person!"
"What?" Hyun's eyes start to tear up as he stares just above Jiyoung's head. "Hyun, I don't know you that well but from what I can tell," through her words, she lays a hand on his shoulder, almost taking him out of the daze he was brought into, "you are selfless and brave for wanting to help them. And those kids need us now. We can't keep them waiting."
Finally, his big dark eyes land on hers again and she smiles. He was back. "Let's go."
