Chapter 5: Two Is Better Than One

"Do you want to save those kids?"

The question stayed on the board as Hyun stood frozen. The question rang through his head until he finally nods.

Dusik starts to write instructions and what Hyun could do. "If you keep your phone connected to any numbers you will hear the beeping sound when a monster is nearby. When you make up your mind come and find me."

Jiyoung could only imagine what the boy felt as he left his own space to come to Dusik's apartment. She heard the beeping only momentarily with Dusik days before as they learned what was happening around them.

How long could he take to get there? Knock, knock. Jiyoung lets out a sigh of relief as Dusik tells him that it was open. The door clicks and creaks open as Hyun slowly walks in huffing.

Hyun's eyes meet Dusik who sat in his wheelchair and Jiyoung who stood by the bathroom with her arms crossed. She leaned against the door as she looked over Hyun. He looked slightly disheveled but she assumed she did as well. The blue curtains were closed tightly now to block out the outside and leave the three to their own devices. Hyun didn't know what to expect from the duo, but not this. Jiyoung had a blue jacket that fit slightly larger than her with a white tank that was already getting dirty.

The silence took over the room but Jiyoung quickly took over. "How are you doing?" Hyun stutters for a moment.

"Are you feeling dizzy?" Dusik then asks.

"He- hello." Jiyoung chuckles at Hyun causing him to turn his attention to her.

"I'm Dusik Hahn. You?"

Hyun opens his mouth, the beads of sweat dripping down his face. "Hyun... Hyun Cha." The awkwardness stiffened the atmosphere making Jiyoung visibly cringe.

"Yeah, Dusik, we've met him and I. Right from outside before this whole thing?" Jiyoung tries to say as she laughs.

"Yeah," Hyun chuckles out with a small smile.

"You're not very talkative, huh?"

Hyun fiddles with his made weapon as he turns his attention to the situation. "So, um, how can I save those kids?"

"Jesus, kid. Look at my leg. You have to go and save them by yourself." Hyun looks down in disappointment but Jiyoung doesn't say a thing. Was her life worth going out there? She could easily say nothing and stay in there. Dusik hesitates before he sees his weapon. "When I was younger, my friends used to call me Mr. Macgyver." Dusik grins at Hyun. "You know what I mean? I was the guy who could build anything with these two hands."

Jiyoung smiles at the nickname as she learned it around a month before and it stuck with her.

"Oh." Hyun on the other hand was clueless, never hearing of Macgyver.

"What I'm telling you is that I can make that thing in your hand into something more useful."

"Huh? Oh really?" Hyun looks at his weapon, the poorly made weapon that consisted of tape, a knife, and most of a broom.

"Give me that."

As Dusik got to work on Hyun's weapon, Hyun looked around the small apartment. It was the same size as all the apartments but this one included the pretty girl he met a week ago. Every moment or so, the two made eye contact, Jiyoung would move around until she stood near the bed, and Dusik's work made more noise. Usually the noise would have bothered Jiyoung, being right next to it in her apartment. Now it was almost comforting to have the noise and being in the same space. Being alone would be terrifying. And that seemed to be what Hyun was until he came to this apartment.

"Must have been hard, with all of this happening," Jiyoung starts, trying to make conversation with him. "Are you alone?"

Hyun nods as he looks between the older man and the girl his age who was only slightly shorter than him. "Have you and your dad always lived here? Mr. Kim said you moved here a month ago."

Neither of the teens noticed Dusik freeze but Jiyoung laughs out loud, her face showing physical discomfort. Hyun curses to himself for asking such a question. "Uh I live next door," Jiyoung answers awkwardly as Dusik resumes his work. "I just moved here a month ago. We were both alone too. Until ya know, the monsters came." The way she spoke about the end of the world surprised Hyun. She made it sound as if someone was playing a practical joke.

The idea still seemed strange to Jiyoung. Monsters. It seemed like a stupid thing she would tell her brother to scare him. Now she wished she could do that now. If she could hear his voice and know they were fine.

"Oh, sorry," Hyun mumbles.

"You haven't been here long either, right?"

"No not really." Hyun thought how he was only there a short time, going to kill himself on the 25th and yet here he was with these two people he only just met to save some kids. What was he thinking?

"Well," Dusik's voice brought them out of their momentary silence to show Hyun his weapon.

"Wow."

Dusik keeps putting the finishing touches while he speaks. "Almost done. Now, you can't adjust the length but it will be stronger."

Hyun stares with his mouth ajar with a look of amazement. "Wow, you are... just like Isaac Clarke." Jiyoung coughs in the awkwardness as neither her and Dusik knew who Isaac Clarke was.

"Don't know who Macgyver is, but Isaac Clarke you do," Jiyoung mutters with a chuckle causing Hyun to glance at her. He only smiles a bit at her as she only looked to be kidding with him.

"Have you seen the blind monster wandering around the hallway? That punk missing the half of his head."

Jiyoung closes her eyes at the thought of that thing. She only saw it for a moment but Dusik didn't allow any further. The creature was terrifying as it yelled about its loss of sight and no one around it.

"Yes." Jiyoung could see the look in his eyes, the haunted look. He obviously had a worse encounter with it than she and Dusik did. She remembered hearing it yell with its monstrous voice.

"I don't know who did that to him but he's still alive even though the top of his head is gone." Dusik clicks a machine on the floor. "Which means a knife won't deal much damage. But this might work." The lights shine in their faces while he finally finishes the weapon. Dusik hands Hyun a backpack to put on, the heavy weight on his back. "I put an inverter connected to a battery in this backpack. It's a bit heavy but you will be able to carry it around. Turning on the switch will make the electricity flow, so be careful. When they get hit by this, they'll probably dance like crazy."

"I, I see..." He trails off as he looks unsure to both of them. Jiyoung couldn't help but feel a weight of her own weapon on her back. Yet it was the weight of guilt that struck her. Dusik had no choice but to stay behind, he couldn't go anywhere. Her on the other hand, what was she doing.

"Hmm, you look like Peter Venkman." Once again, Dusik was met with a confused look from Hyun.

"Seriously man? Ghostbusters, you're killing me." Dusik chuckles at the girl's outburst as Hyun prepares himself to venture out of the apartment again.

"Make sure to come back as soon as you save those children, got it?"

"Okay, okay!" Hyun turns back to Dusik as he clutches his weapon. His knuckles almost turn white as his hands hold on to the weapon like it was his last hope. Jiyoung knew it was his last hope though. Being with monsters that were all around with nothing but a handmade weapon was terrifying. Jiyoung knew what her mother would say if she saw her standing there useless. She sighs but Hyun speaks before she could. "By the way, sir," Hyun starts with an affirmation from Dusik, "now I can defeat monsters with this, right?"

Jiyoung had to stop herself from laughing as the words came out of his mouth. The sentence itself sounded naive. She did not think there was any defeating. These monsters were going to stay whether anyone liked it or not. It's just surviving and avoiding.

"No," Dusik drops the ball. "Of course you can't."

"What?"

This time Jiyoung lets out a giggle she didn't know she was holding in. "Have you seen those things? It would take a bomb to kill them honestly. That will only help," Jiyoung states as she gestures to his weapon. Her words did not help his confidence as then Dusik continues.

"Avoid them as much as possible. Jiyoung's right, that will only slightly increase your chance for survival. Basically, just run away when you see them. No just, don't get caught in the first place."

"Well..." Hyun didn't know what to say as his voice grew softer in fright. "Then can I borrow your shotgun or..."

"That's my insurance." Jiyoung didn't like hearing something like that, but his choices weren't hers, she knew she had no right.

"In... insurance?"

The closet creaks as Dusik pulls out his homemade shotgun. "Yes. This baby shoots a bunch of nails with compressed air and gas. To use it, you have to turn the air compressor on. It's rather crudely made so it will break after two or three shots. If a monster breaks in, the first shot is for that punk, and the last shot..." Dusik's dull eyes connected with the fearful ones of Hyun's and then continues, "I'll be using it for the comfort of my own."

"That," Hyun stutters out, "that will never happen."

"In this kind of situation, you can never be certain on anything." Jiyoung wished she could be certain about anything at the moment. But everything at the moment was uncertain. Her life, the life of her family, those around her. Nothing was certain or safe. But Jiyoung would admit that she was used to uncertainty before. "Still... you look quite young but you've managed to survive. I've got to admit you're pretty impressive."

"Right back at you."

"Now, save those kids before it's too late. You can tell us about your adventure later."

Jiyoung stands there as Hyun puts the earbud in his ear, the static being a comforting sound. "Wait." Hyun turns his head, his hand hovering over the door knob. Jiyoung turns to Dusik, while her heart was beating too fast for its own good, she kept her confident smirk. "Think you can handle yourself for a while?" Dusik looks up at Jiyoung who gestured to him. The question was as sarcastic as the young girl beside him. Dusik takes a second, as if speaking to her through his eyes until he nods. Jiyoung adjusts herself and goes towards Hyun. "I'm coming with you."

Hyun furrows his eyebrows, wonder in his eyes. Her sudden decision shocked him. "Why?"

"Two is better than one." He couldn't just go alone to get the two kids, she thought. While she could feel her heart beat out of her chest, she knew it was the right thing. Damn my good nature, Jiyoung curses to herself. "Let's go save them."

"Ok... well then." Hyun doesn't mention the fact that she held no large weapon in her hand like he did. Surely she meant well.

As they step outside of the apartment, Jiyoung instantly takes out the gun with the silencer attached, ammunition hidden. Hyun turns his head towards her, his eyes widening. "Calm down," she mouths to him with a roll of her eyes.

Where the hell did she get a gun? Hyun thinks.

Dusik sits in his apartment in the wheelchair as he watched the two teens go, one more impulsive than the other, as he thought, "The only problem would be that you don't seem very reliable." And the other thought that ran through was how reliable could they be to each other if they found a monster.
