Among the cargo containers
The car came to a stop. Alandria and Emmeline slowly came out after their aunt ordered them to. The ship horn echoing around them could still be heard and for some reason it made Alandria nervous. It was as if it was preparing her to run away...one...three...Run!
"You know why I am doing this" Aunt Ninana began in a poised tone, looking at both of them.
*Because you're a psycho*
"Because we have disappointed you" Alandria said instead.
"Yes" the aunt said with big eyes, "At least you understand."
"But don't you think it's cruel?" the young girl asked.
"Why, no! It's the proper way to teach you all a lesson" the woman replied, "Besides, I get to decide. Not you."
"My mother would not have approved of this, you know that" Alandria said suddenly, fixing her.
Aunt Ninana kept quiet. A hint of guilt appeared in her eyes before disappearing...almost as soon as it came.
"Your mother would have appreciated that I am taking difficult decisions to set your right" the woman said in a proud tone, "You need to remember that I am doing this for your own good."
"No, you're not" Alandria smiled at her weakly, "Today it's locking us in a cargo, tomorrow what?"
"Tomorrow?" the woman laughed, "Well I have other methods..."
"Aunt, we can resolve this" Alandria sighed, "We don't have to live this way! We can be close to each other. We can stop hating each other. We can be a...family..."
"I have no ambition to be close to you Alandria" Aunt Ninana stated in an icy tone, "I had one child and she passed away. No one can ever replace her."
"I don't want to replace her" Alandria added, "Linsey will never be replaced. She was unique. I just want us to live like a normal family. I just want us to care for each other...at least a little."
Alandria knew that she had to give her aunt a chance before she decided to run away...for good. Aunt Ninana was an evil person, but deep down perhaps therwas some good in her. She had to give her the benefit of the doubt. Aunt Ninana was after all her blood relative. A part of her did not want to leave the only aunt she had behind.
"How do I put this in simple words..." Aunt Ninana started.
Alandria could sense the hatred in her words.
"I...despise you and your sister more than anything in this world."
At this, Alandria's heart broke. She felt something break in her. She knew what that was...her bond with her aunt.
No matter how much they disliked each other, they still had this little 'aunt-niece' bond. They were still used to each other. And Alandria always hoped that one day they would be close...not like mother-daughter but she hoped that they would at least not hate each others' sight.
"What did I do to you...?" Alandria whispered.
"Nothing, I just hate" Aunt Ninana finished with a mocking smile.
"THEN WHY THE HELL DID YOU TAKE US IN? WHY DIDN'T YOU LET US GO TO A FOSTER HOME?" the girl screamed, tears running down her cheeks.
Emmeline flinched.
"BECAUSE BOTH YOU AND LINSEY WERE HURT IN THE GONDOLA LIFT CRASH BUT SHE DIED! YOU MADE IT ALIVE! WHY DID SHE HAVE TO DIE? WHY?" Aunt Ninana yelled, her eyes showing pain and fury.
"It's not my fault that I survived and it's not Linsey's fault she died!" Alandria yelled back, "It's nobody's fault! A lot of people died!"
"And you should have been among them too!"
"How can you say that?" Alandria whispered, "You hate me because I didn't die?"
"No, I hate you because I hate you. I have always hated you..."
"You hate me because I was better than Linsey in every field" Alandria pointed out.
"No" Aunt Ninana contradicted her, "My daughter was better than you. Take them away!"
Alandria did not realise that two men had arrived and were standing behind her. When did they even get here?
"Zayden!" Alandria yelled in joy, looking behind the men.
The two guys instantly turned around and Alandria used that opportunity to say:
"Now!"
Emmeline jumped on her back and the girl sprinted as fast as she could on the right, banging her arm against the cargo container. She ignored the intense pain that instantly shot through her arm, focusing on her way. Then men were not too far behind and Aunt Ninana was yelling 'Get them! Get them now!' in the background.
"Alandria! They're coming!" Emmeline said nervously before hiding her face in her sister's nape.
"We can do this Emmeline! We can do this!" Alandria said, more to herself than to her sister.
She sped in the harbour, feeling like she could fly any moment from the exercise. She was surrounded with cargo containers. Some were stacked on each other, while others stood independently. It was a real labyrinth.
As she ran, she zigzagged in several directions to lose the men behind her, hoping that she was not getting herself lost.
*We're lost...we're literally lost...* her brain warned her.
"No, we're not!" Alandria said with a grin as her eyes hit a ladder next to a red cargo container.
Without losing a second, she checked the stability of the ladder, re positioned it and climbed on top until she reached the top of the container. Then she eyed the placed around her.
"Right, right, left....then right again. When I see the blue container...that's when I know I have reached the end."
Recording that in her brain, she got down and took the road that would lead her out.
"Now left..." she breathed, running as fast as she could before coming to a halt.
"Why did you stop?" Emmeline asked her.
"Shhh...."
Alandria looked around her. Silence. Dead silence.
"These guys aren't stupid...they must be waiting for me at the end..."
She walked slowly until she saw the blue cargo container. She knew they were waiting for her behind it.
"What now? she asked herself, "Think! Think!"
Emmeline was eyeing her curiously in the mean time.
She thought for a moment...what could she do? She had no ideas left!
"Oh..if only I had some gadgets to help me out..." she breathed, feeling annoyed.
She had nothing with her. Absolutely nothing.
Then it hit her!
"Of course!" she whispered happily before sprinting back to the red cargo container.
She saw it! It was still there!
Alandria took a deep breath and carefully pulled the ladder to the ground. She then carried it along with her until she reach the long blue cargo container which seemed around 48 foot. She made sure not to make too much sound.
She then placed against it.
Crouching to the ground, she picked up some pebbles and stowed them in her pockets.
"Not one sound Emmeline" she warned her sister before climbing.
As soon as she arrived on top of the cargo container, she glided on the top until her head reached the far edge.
"I knew it" she whispered to herself.
The two men were waiting for her down.
"Time for action!" the girl removed the stones that she had been carrying with her and threw some of them on the other side.
They hit a yellow cargo container which gave loud metal sound.
"She's over there!" one of the men yelled and both ran in the other direction.
"Let's go!" Alandria said as she ran to the ladder again, got down in three seconds and ran for her life!
"THERE SHE IS!" the other man yelled as soon as Alandria appeared running in the open space.
"Go, go, go!!! Alandria!" Emmeline shrieked.
Alandria ran as quickly as she could. She ran past the cars, the giant boxes, but she knew that the men would able to catch up with her.
"Alandria!" Emmeline cried.
"What?"
"Look at these beautiful statues!"
"What...this is not the time...." Alandria said then suddenly got an idea.
There was a lot of commotion in the harbour with cars and small lorries driving away. The young girl seized the opportunity and got into the commotion before hopping in the small lorry which surprisingly set off two seconds later. It was going to deliver its goods somewhere and wherever the hell that was did not bother Alandria at all. At least it was far from these people behind her.
Alandria hid behind the statues and watched as the men looked for her for a few seconds before walking away. Then she could not see anything, the lorry was going in the opposite way and the harbour started shrinking away from her view.
