.

The early morning sun rises, the sky a soft shade of purple and blue. A guard stands on the castle wall, looking over the area before continuing his patrol.

...

(Y/N) paces anxiously in her stone cell, her expression hardened as she bites at her finger nail. She approaches the window of the cell, grabbing the bars and looking out towards the harbor.

She jumps as her cell door opens, the Captain standing at the entrance with two other guards behind him.

"Let's get this over with, (L/N)," Captain lowly says, beckoning her to walk forward.

"What?" (Y/N) whispers, shaking her head as she faces him. "You don't mean..."

The Captain doesn't answer, his expression only hardening as the other two guards look down at the ground.

Her face falls, a quiet, trembling breath leaving her lips. She looks back out the window, her eyes squeezing shut as she turns and approaches the guards.

...

..

Gothel, his hair once again a dark shade of black and his skin smoothed over, reaches up, plucking the last flower in Faunus' hair.

"There," he speaks warmly, dropping the flower with the others in his basket. "It never happened."

Faunus sits on his bed, a broken expression on his face as he looks down at his hands clasped on his lap.

"Now!" Gothel rises from the bed, picking up the basket as he walks towards the doorway. "Wash up for dinner. I'm making hazelnut soup!"

He says with a singsong, turning back to Faunus with a grin. His smile falls as his brow arches, Faunus not looking up or responding.

Gothel sighs, looking up in exasperation. "I really did try, Faunus. I tried to warn you what was out there."

He shakes his head, grabbing onto the curtain.

"The world is dark, and selfish, and cruel," his eyes narrow, words coming out harsh. "If it finds even the slightest ray of sunshine..."

He scoffs, leaning forward as he scowls.

"It destroys it."

With that, Gothel shuts the curtains, his footsteps fading as he walks away from the room. Faunus listens for a few moments, sighing shakily as he opens his hands and reveals the small bird (Y/N) had carved for him.

His thumb strokes over the wood as he rises, approaching his dresser. Pushing aside some of the few clothing items he had, he tucks it away in the back safely, hiding it behind the clothing and shutting the drawer.

Faunus sighs once more as he walks back to his bed, turning and sitting down. He reaches inside his shirt, pulling out the necklace (Y/N) had given him. He holds the sun in his palm, smiling a bit before his face falls to a saddened one. Shaking his head and reaching behind him, he unclips the necklace from around his neck, lowering it in his hands on his lap.

A small squeak makes him look to his side, Pascal squeaking sadly as he turns blue and hugs the side of Faunus' leg to offer comfort. Faunus manages a small smile, though it falls as he leans back on his bed fully.

He stares up at the ceiling, his murals scattered around beautifully.

Faunus looks along the designs, his eyebrows furrowing a bit when he notices something. He lifts the necklace up, the sun charm dangling a bit before settling. Faunus lowers it and looks over the ceiling, raising the necklace up once more.

He slowly sits up with squinted eyes, not taking them off the ceiling as he lowers the necklace. A soft gasp leaves him, one of his paintings clearly outlining the same Corona symbol hanging on his necklace. His painting seems to come to life, shining a bright gold.

Faunus looks around his walls, spotting the sun symbols all along his walls hidden in his paintings. He rises swiftly as he clasps the necklace in his hand, staggering to the center of his room as he looks up before gasping as a memory flashes through his mind.

...

He sees a spinning mobile, Corona's symbol looking down at him. Looking to his side, he sees two blurred figures, a woman's soft laughter reaching his ears as she reaches for him.

...

The painted mural of the king and queen flash through his mind, his eyes focusing on the baby boy in her arms.

...

Faunus sees himself in the mirror, setting the crown over his head with curiosity. It fit him perfectly.

...

Faunus exclaims with pain as he staggers back, holding his aching head as he crashes into his vanity, knocking the chair over as he catches himself.

He looks up with clarity, breathing heavily as he tightly holds the necklace in his hands.

...

..

(Y/N) walks with her head hanging low, two guards escorting her as the Captain walks ahead leading them. A million thoughts wracked at her brain, the main one being Faunus.

She looks up fearfully as she sighs, catching glimpse of someone in a cell ahead. Bran sat against the wall closest to the cell door, Rhett sitting on the bench with his head down.

(Y/N)'s face hardens into a furious scowl, her breathing picking up. She yanks her arm free before slamming her shoulder up against the guard's jaw, making him grunt in pain as he falls. She turns to the other, delivering a swift kick upward against the bottom of his chin and knocking him down.

She lowers her hands behind her and leaps over them, her hands now at her frontside as she charges at the cell.

(Y/N) reaches inside, Bran exclaiming when she grabs his shirt and slams his face against the cell bars closer to hers.

"How did you know about him?!" (Y/N) yells powerfully, leaning him back and slamming him against the cell bars once more. "Tell me, now, or I swear I'll—!"

"It-- It wasn't us!" Bran stammers fearfully, his face bruising a bright red. "It was the old man!"

(Y/N)'s brows furrow at this. "Old man? What old..."

Her face falls with realization, sharply inhaling through her teeth as her complexion pales.

"Faunus..." (Y/N) breathes out in horror.

She yelps when the guards slam into her, grabbing her and yanking her away from Bran.

"Wait! No--! Listen to me!" (Y/N) shouts as she thrashes against their hold, eyes wide with panic. "You don't understand! He needs help! Listen to me, please!"

Captain ignores her, turning and continuing on as the guards shove her along, (Y/N) still fighting against them.

...

..

"Faunus?" Gothel calls with concern, standing at the bottom of the stairs and looking up.

He receives no response, making his eyes narrow as he starts up the steps.

"Faunus, what's going on up there?"

...

Faunus pants softly as he stares at the ground, shaking his head.

...

Faunus pulls the curtain open, Gothel pausing on the step he was on when he sees him.

"Are you all right?" he questions, frowning.

Faunus stands in the doorway, one hand gripping the curtain tightly while the other holds his necklace at his side in the other.

"I'm the lost prince," Faunus mutters quietly, still in shock as he stares at the ground with wide eyes.

Gothel scowls in annoyance, having not heard him as he rolls his eyes. "Please, speak up, Faunus. You know how I hate the mumbling!"

Faunus' jaw clenches in anger.

"I am the lost prince!" he shouts firmly, lifting his gaze from the floor to meet Gothel's. "Aren't I?"

Gothel's face pales, his eyes widening in shock as he stares at Faunus.

"Did I mumble... Father?" Faunus questions lowly, releasing the curtain and clipping the necklace back around his neck as he slowly straightens to his full height. "Or should I even call you that?"

Faunus scowls down at Gothel, Gothel's mouth opening and closing a few times.

Gothel forces a laugh, waving his hand. "Oh, Faunus! Do you even hear yourself? One trip out into the world, and you come back thinking you're a prince!"

He guffaws loudly, continuing up the stairs towards Faunus.

"Why would you ask such as ridiculous question?" he sighs in amusement, stepping toward Faunus with his arms open for a hug.

Faunus grunts as he shoves him away, Gothel staggering back and catching himself.

"It was you!" Faunus yells with devastation, shaking his head. "It was all you!"

Gothel's face darkens as he looks to Faunus, "Everything I did... was to protect you."

Faunus' chest heaves with anger as he pushes Gothel out of his way, descending down the stairs as Gothel turns and quickly follows.

"Faunus!" Gothel barks sharply.

Faunus ignores him, continuing down the stairs as he laughs angrily. "I've spent my entire life hiding from people who would use me for my power--"

"Faunus!"

"-- when I should have been hiding... from you!" Faunus spits as he reaches the end of the stairs, turning and glaring up at Gothel.

Gothel scoffs, smirking as he crosses his arms over his chest. "Where will you go? She won't be there for you!"

...

..

(Y/N) thrashes against the guards, who all hold her down as they force her to continue down the hall.

"What did you do to her?" Faunus demands.

(Y/N) looks ahead, her eyes widening at the sight of the gallows waiting for her in the next room.

"That criminal... is to be hanged for her crimes."

...

..

A startled gasp leaves Faunus, his face paling as his hand comes up to his mouth, his stomach churning with dread.

"No..." he whispers with horror, shaking his head as he looks away from Gothel.

Gothel descends the steps, moving to Faunus' side and speaking in a calming voice. "Now, now! It's all right. Listen to me..."

Faunus stares at the ground with horror, his hand coming up and pushing his hair back in a stressed manner.

"Everything is as it should be," Gothel muses, reaching up to pat the top of Faunus' hair.

"No!"

Faunus grabs Gothel's wrist, holding it painfully tight as he breathes heavily with an enraged expression.

"You were wrong about the world," Faunus speaks powerfully, glaring down at Gothel. "And you were wrong about me!"

Gothel winces in pain, grunting as he tries to yank his arm away.

"And I will never..." Faunus' grip tightens around Gothel's wrist, making him exclaim from the pain. "Let you use my hair again!"

Gothel pulls back with all his strength, Faunus releasing his wrist as he does. Gothel flings back, catching himself as he runs into the mirror. The mirror falls onto its side, shattering into thousands of pieces.

He pants as he looks from the broken mirror to Faunus, Faunus standing tall as he sneers at him before turning and walking away towards the trap door they had used to get inside.

"You want me to be the bad guy?" Gothel softly murmurs, rolling his shoulder as he cracks his neck. "Fine. Now I'm the bad guy."
