Fur Types and Styles
I've come up with 5 main types of fur, but of course, there are more types out there. (I drew these hastily. May not look the best, but at least you get a rough idea of what they look like.)
1. Manes/Thick fur
These are drawn with quick spontaneous strokes of the brush, randomly going upwards and downwards, left and right and really, anywhere that you desire. You hold the pencil - you are the judge. But usually, for names or thick fur, the fur alignment is quite uniform (going in one specific direction), unlike unruly short fur, which shall be explained in No.4.
2. Long fur (neat)
I draw long fur by using long strokes of the pencil, usually curved gracefully and in one general direction, unless you are trying to give shape to the fur on the animal. For example, the one I drew in the picture may be present on the lower jaw of some sort of beast.
3. Short fur (neat)
Short fur takes the most time to draw, and is actually quite frustrating (if you are the impatient type) because you need to draw in all the individual hairs one by one. The pencil strokes are really short and tiny to give the fur its needed detail. If you want more reference for short fur, look back at my previous chapter, Snow Wolf Gift. The wolf there has both thick, slightly unruly fur and short fur, and also a hint of long fur on its jaws.
4. Short fur (unruly)
This type of fur is just random. And I do mean random. Just simply stroke your pencil as you wish, in any direction. It can even be single lines instead of curled fur... you know, like shading in a single direction? (Something like the long haired one, but shorter lines instead lol)
5. Long tangled fur
These are like long coils of fur hanging in random jumbles, swishing to the left, right, up or down. Mostly left and right though.
Again, a good reference is the Snow Wolf I drew. It basically has most of the types of fur stated above. Also, you might want to take a look at Hexxa (The six-legged beast at the early chapters of this book). She has a mane, and also cat-like features and musculature. Or, if you want, you can always look at real life animals, they make the best reference XD
The fur I drew here relates mostly to beasts, felines and canines, or any mammal. Sure, there's curly fur (sheep) and poofed up fur (alpacas) but now, we are not focusing on those species of animals. If any of you want a tutorial on other types of hide, like scales, leathery skin etc, I can always try to make one ^^
