Chapter 2 : A too perfect friend
The next day I was late for school. I had talked so much with Rachelle last night that I forgot to sleep. So I fell asleep in class. It still traumatized me thinking back to how my classmates were watching me snore.
I told Kelly and Madison about my 'meeting' with Rachelle and they were pretty worried.
'You should be careful Sophie.' Madison had warned me. 'Don't forget that there are a lot of bad people on social media.'
'You sound like my dad' I said. 'I'm telling you she was bored and typed in a random number and it came up mine. As she proved to me that she was a girl, we started chatting. That's it!'
'But don't you think it's weird that it happened to you' Madison insisted. 'I mean, you guys look exactly alike. You had a one in a billion chance of meeting your look-alike.'
'It's almost as if that Rachelle already knew you looked like her' Kelly added.
'Listen, girls' I said, annoyed, 'I think you're just jealous because Rachelle is cooler than you are. So I'll leave you with your jealousy until you understand that Rachelle is a good person, and that she could become best friend with the three of us.'
I turned to leave them alone in the courtyard but behind my back I could hear them saying 'I have a bad feeling'. But I ignored them to go and talk with some of my other friends.
It made me sad. Kelly and Madison and I had never had a fight. The three of us were best friends forever. After that little fight, everything just got worse. My two best friends and I ignored each other all day long. But Madison, who was the nicest of the three of us, had tried to talk to me several times but each time I ignored her. I wanted to forget about them for the moment.
When I got home, I rushed to the couch to re-watch the Fashion Star final that I had missed yesterday. But as I watched the show intently, my phone started to vibrate. I grabbed it. It was Rachelle who had sent me:
- Hi Sophie.
- Hi Rachelle. What are you doing?
- I'm watching the replay of the Fashion Star final. I couldn't see it yesterday because we talked until very late.
- What a coincidence! I'm also watching the replay of the final.
- Really? Cool. Let's do a voice call and comment on the final live.
- That's a good idea. But why don't we video call each other? That would be cooler.
- We can't do that. I didn't sleep well last night because of our discussion. I slept through class and I have dark circles around my eyes. I don't want you to see how awful I look.
- It's funny, I fell asleep in class too. We look so much alike, you and I. And not just physically. 😄
So we put out a voice call and spent the evening watching the final of Fashion Star, the best show in the world, commenting on all the scenes and criticizing all the contestants. At the end of the show, we started talking via message again. So I texted her:
- I loved this episode.
- Yeah, I did too. Although I would have preferred Morgana to win. Anyway, I had a great time with you tonight.
- Yeah, me too.
- So, um... Are we friends?
- Yes. We're friends.👭
We kept talking until 1am this time. I realized very quickly that Rachelle was very friendly, very funny, and most of all, very social. I was very surprised that a girl as great as her only had one friend.
But that's what I thought before I knew who she really was...
Rachelle and I kept chatting on WhatsApp together. We laughed, challenged each other, helped each other with homework and so on. We even sent each other our Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok accounts. Well, it was more her following me on social media but I could see that we were building a strong bond. We talked so much that I even stopped hanging out with Kurt. We could have been BFF, she and I. But one thing kept us from becoming best friends forever. We never saw each other in person. We didn't even talk on video calls because there were always something standing in the way: bad connections, sick days, you name it. So, after nine months of chatting on WhatsApp, Rachelle suggested:
- Say Sophie, we've known each other for a long time now, would you like to meet up tomorrow?
Since my relationship with Kelly and Madison was still as fragile as it was at the beginning of the fight, and we weren't talking because they still wouldn't admit that Rachelle was cool, I didn't hesitate and said:
- Oh yes! But where?
- I went on Google Maps to look for a place where we could meet in your town. How about the park?
- I'm fine with that. I'm cool with that. Can I bring my friends and my boyfriend? I want them all to know what a nice girl you are.
- It's better just the two of us, don't you think? I wouldn't want your boyfriend kissing me in front of you thinking he was kissing you.
- It's true that it would drive me crazy.😏
- Besides, I'm not sure your friends will like me. After all, you did leave them for me. I don't want to cause any more fights.
- You're right. Let's leave those two jealous ladies alone. So... what time should we meet? ⌚
- 8pm.🕗
- It's a bit late, don't you think?
- Won't your parents agree?
- Yes, they will. At my house, curfew is 9pm. But I just wanted to know why 8pm.
- It's to make sure it's not too crowded. The sun will still be up, so we'll have just enough time to do a BFF tiktok together. You'll see, your friends will be blown away when they see "two Sophie" dancing next to each other.
- Rachelle, you really have some genius ideas.💡
- THX.😁
I was ecstatic at the thought of meeting Rachelle. We had so much to talk about. After seeing her, I would have invited her home for dinner one of these days. We could have told each other intimate secrets, taken a walk downtown together, or gone to the movies together.
But it was all an illusion, because this meeting with Rachelle was only the beginning of a series of disasters that would traumatize me for life...
