Chapter 4
Hours had gone by as you sighed deeply, you were required to stay late tonight until 3 in the morning where you would spend the day off tomorrow to catch up with the sleep that you would be missing. You hummed quietly while helping Krista tidy up the front desk before she could leave, "Staying overnight?" Krista asked as you sighed with a slight smile
"Yeah, don't get off until 3 tomorrow morning." You say as Krista pouts.
"Aw, that sucks. So you're not coming in to work tomorrow then?" She asked as you nod.
"Mhm, but I'm still on call in case something happens and they need my assistance." You say as she nods.
"I think Doctor Ackerman is working overnight too tonight, he doesn't get off until 4 or 5 tomorrow morning." Krista informed, "He's on call too since he's one of the best doctors here."
"Damn, that's got to suck." You say, "I can't imagine having to work until 5 in the morning and not be able to rest if you're a doctor on call. Being a doctor looks pretty stressful and exhausting."
"It pays really well though." Krista points out.
"That's true." You say with a nod in agreement as Krista gets ready to leave.
"Anyway, I should get going." Krista hummed while grabbing her bag, she gives you a sympathetic and sweet smile, "Hope you rest well when you get off your shift."
"Thanks, Krista. Have a good night." She smiled and nodded.
"You too, see ya." She said before leaving. You sigh softly as you grab some of Doctor Ackerman's patients' files for him to fill out and head over to the elevator. You look at the hefty folders and grimace, knowing Doctor Ackerman isn't going to be enthusiastic about more work that you're bringing him. Which made you kinda scared since you had a feeling that he didn't like you that much and that you might be annoying him. So delivering more work to him yourself might make him hate you a tad bit more and it makes your stomach sink. You walk to Doctor Ackerman's office and see the door closed. You gulp softly and raise a hand to knock, hesitating a bit before knocking.
"Come in." You hear his deep and monotone voice say on the other side. You open the door to see Doctor Ackerman at his desk with piles of paperwork stacked on his desk, his desk lamp the only light source that was on as Doctor Ackerman is seen with his forehead in his palm while leaning on his desk, tired eyes scanning over lines and words as he filled out paperwork. His white coat hung over the sofa as his dress shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. You honestly felt really bad for the man as you studied the paperwork stacks and looking at the files that you would be adding to it. You grimace as you stepped in quietly watching him work and seeing the bags under his eyes, thinking how exhausted he must be and having to stay until 5 in the morning to add to that exhaustion. You wonder if he's sleep deprived most days
"I have your patients' files-"
"Just put them over there." He cuts you off, never looking up at you as his hand continued filling out the paperwork. You bite you cheek and nod.
"O-Of course." You say quietly while neatly putting the files next to the paperwork that he has yet to fill out. You notice through the dimly lit office that it's rather kept really clean and tidy, even with all of the work that he had to do piled up on his desk was extremely neat and organized as there wasn't a sign of any clutter. You wonder if he has OCD because you knew you can't even your own apartment clean for a day without it being unorganized instantly. You stand there awkwardly fiddling with your hands as the sound of his pen writing on paper is heard in the quiet office. You also notice that he had a large bulletin board on his wall with what seemed like letters and children's drawing hung up on it, including the child's drawing from earlier in the day when you were Doctor Smith. This made you smile a bit as you realize these are "thank you" letters and drawings from his previous patients and it warmed your heart seeing that he hung these up in his office.
"Don't you have things to do, Nurse (L/n)?" He asked bluntly, still not looking up at you. His voice making you snap out of your thoughts and look back at him.
"Well, not at the moment no. I already checked on the in-stay patients." You say softly, as Doctor Ackerman doesn't say anything but continuously write. You bite your lip softly and looking at the floor in thought before back up at him, "Do you... Need anything, Doctor?"
"What do you mean?" He asked while finishing filling out one sheet of paperwork and moving on to the next.
"Like, um, do you need anything to drink?" You asked softly as he's quiet for a moment, glancing up at you for a short moment as he filled out the new sheet of paperwork and back down.
"Tea." He answered.
"What kind-?"
"Black." He answered, cutting you off again. You nod and are about to leave, "Wait." He said and you immediately stop and turn back to look at him. He puts his pen down and turned in his swivel chair to the shelf behind him where medical books were neatly placed along with framed degrees. He plucks a jar from one of the shelves and spins back around in his chair at you, holding out the jar. "Use these. I like my tea to be made traditionally with actual tea leaves unlike those generic pouches."
"What's wrong with them?"
"Do I need a reason, Nurse (L/n)?" He asked with a slight glare and you quickly shook your head.
"N-No, Doctor." You say as he clicked his tongue.
"Tch, just take the damn jar already." He ordered and you quickly walked over to take the jar from his hand, your fingers accidentally brush against his and you blush softly whereas he didn't seem to notice. "Have you ever made tea with the loose leaves before?" You shook your head.
"No, this is my first time." You said, you weren't going to admit that you use the Lipton tea pouches after seeing his obvious dislike of them.
"You better not mess it up then." He warned before going back to work and waving his hand dismissively. You gulp softly and nod before leaving his office to the break room. You take out your phone and look up on how to properly make tea because you'd rather not face the wrath of a mean, cold, sleep deprived with a hint of annoyed doctor. Once you get to the break room, you finally seem to understand the basics before you begin the process. It took a little bit and it made you somewhat stressed knowing that it had to be perfect. Once you finished, you take the kettle that you strained the tea leaves in and grab a cup before making your way back to Doctor Ackerman's office. You walked in, not surprised to see him still filling out paperwork, placed the cup down on his desk beside his arm. You then pour the tea into the cup and then step back to place the kettle on the small coffee table in front of the sofa. You wonder if he sometimes sleeps or takes naps on it when he works really late overnight shifts. Doctor Ackerman glanced at the cup as he wrote and picked it up by the rim, which you found a bit strange but kept your mouth shut, and brought the cup to his lips. He takes a small sip, he pauses when he pulls it away from his mouth as he tasted and swallowed the tea before placing it back down on his desk. He doesn't say a word as he went back to work, you stood there in suspense from the silence from him before he finally spoke.
"Not bad." He said and you let out a deep sigh of relief, you hadn't even realized you were holding your breath in suspense the entire time.
"Really?" You asked as he nodded.
"You did well, surprisingly. The other nurses whom I've worked with previously did absolutely horrendous and wasted best quality tea leaves from how badly they did. So, good job." He said, even when he complimented without looking at you, you felt a smile cross your features as this was the first time he's ever praised you a job well done and it made your heart flutter.
"Thank you, Doctor." You say as he nodded.
"No problem. Hey, since you have nothing to do with yourself," He rolled over to a file cabinet, not even bothering getting out of his chair, dragging a finger down the drawers before stopping at one and opening it. His fingers skim through the file labels before taking out some files and closed the drawer before standing and walking over to you,"Make yourself useful and make copies of these patient files for me, por favore." He said while handing you the files in one hand while his other was slipped in his black slacks, his white button up tucked into them and his neck tie loosened a bit. You had to admit, you really liked this kind of look on him.
You nod, "Of course." You say before taking the files from his hand and your fingers accidentally brush against his again and you blushed a tiny bit more than last time, hoping he didn't notice again. But he did as he had glanced at you the second your fingers touched and he sees the blush on your cheeks, he smirked a tiny bit at that and he slipped that hand into his other pocket.
"Good," He said softly, "Now go on." He said as you quickly nodded and speedily walked out of his office with the blush on your face never leaving. Doctor Ackerman watches you leave and huffed out a small, breathless, and quiet chuckle with a shake of his head before sitting back down at his desk. Leaning back a bit and looking at the cup of tea before picking it up and taking another sip, letting out a somewhat content hum, "At least the brat got something done right for once." He murmured while taking some more sips of his tea.
