Chapter 4

Mid Morning.

All seemed normal, kids disappointed over the fact Christmas Break was over and they were back in school. However, to two young boys, something was definitely wrong.

One, Miles Edgeworth, was notably absent.

This set off a number of red flags, as he was a very punctual student, having perfect attendance all year.

Phoenix frowned as he pondered all the reasons as to why Miles would be absent on the first day back.

Early Evening.

Miles silently grieved as he collected his things from his former home. His eyes were dark and his movements were slow.

His head snapped up when a voice echoed throughout the house

"Edgeworth. We must be going. Come."

He faced the person who addressed him, his gaze fixed downward.

"Yes sir."

The boy grabbed his things that he threw together and walked up to the man.

Dark green eyes met silver eyes.

The man dressed in dark purple walked out of the house and beckoned Miles to follow.

Wordlessly, he followed into a sleek, modern, black car. He climbed into the back to find a toddler, strapped into a car seat on the opposite side of the car.  Even being, by the looks of it, under the age of 3, she radiated a confidence and power he couldn't quite understand.

She glared at him and said, though with some difficulty in pronunciation, "Foolish fool."

Miles stayed quiet, knowing a simple response would most likely provoke her.

Weeks passed and Phoenix's suspicions only grew.

Miles hadn't shown up to school for weeks, and Phoenix was getting extremely concerned.

After returning home from school, the spiky haired boy rushed to his room to write a special letter. He threw open the door to his room and sat down at his desk. He grabbed some blank white paper before pushing that aside for a more colorful piece of card stock.

'Only the best for Miles,' he thought to himself as he began his letter on the red card stock with a black sharpie.

Dear Miles,
Hey Miles! How have you been? I've been ok but everyone at school has been wondering where you went. it's like you disappeared into thin air. Larry and I have been missed you a ton, we haven't played Signal Samurai since you were here. Please tell us when you will be coming back! We can't wait. We miss you, Miles.
Love, Phoenix

Phoenix read his short letter with contentment and before grabbing an envelope, an idea formed in his head. He grabbed his colored-pencils and scrawled out a doodle at the bottom of the card stock. It depicted Signal Blue and Signal Red, their two favorite characters from the Signal Samurai.

Phoenix grinned at his finished letter and bolted towards the kitchen where his parents were residing. "Mama, I need a stamp for my letter!" he exclaimed as he approached his mother, brandishing his letter.

His mother smiled at her boy as she took the letter from him and ruffled his hair. She then opened a drawer and fished out a stamp. She licked the back and placed it on Phoenix's letter. She handed her boy back his letter and watched as he bolted out the door.

Phoenix rushed out the door and down the street till he came across a blue mailbox. He took one more look at the letter and slipped in it into the box. His face shifted into a grin and bounded off towards his home, his thoughts wandering about what Miles will write back to him.

Much to Phoenix's mother surprise, a very similar letter turned up in the mail with a giant return stamp on the back. She frowned and glanced in the general direction of her son's room. She then took it upon herself to get this letter to little Miles. So, with some help from some other parents and the Internet, which for the record was way harder to operate that she expected, she found out that Miles Edgeworth was taken in by Prosecutor Manfred von Karma and now was living in Germany. Luckily, she was able to find the address and got a new envelope with the new address. She then walked to the mailbox and slipped it in. She made a point to tell Phoenix about the new address.

Grey locks of hair fell into his face as he stared down on a law book.

Miles brushed his bangs out of his face as a soft knock resonated throughout his chambers. His mail was slipped under his door and his silver eyes caught the sight of an envelope among his assignments and notices. He stood up from his desk and walked over to the large wooden door. He picked up his mail and fingered through it till he was faced with the letter that caught his attention moments ago. Based on the stamp used, it was from the US. This didn't surprise as he did leave his whole life back in the States. He soon pushed the thought of his younger years to the back of his mind as Von Karma always said.

He took his letter opener and slit open the top of the letter to pull out the bright-colored letter. He folded open the letter and scanned the contents and his eyes stopped and widen when he start the scrawled signature adorning the bottom.

"Love, Phoenix."

Miles hadn't considered the possibility of one of his friends from America finding his new address and paying the price of international shipping.

Miles couldn't help but let a smile grow across his face. He pulled out his own stationery and began to write out a response to his old friend.

He finished the letter and placed it in a envelope. After a long amount of time trying to remember Phoenix's address, Miles stood and strode out of his room. As he passed through the long, elegant hallways of the Von Karma mansion, a booming, gravely voice rang out from one of the rooms that he passed.

"Edgeworth, come."

Miles stopped dead in his tracks and walked over to the study in which the owner of the voice was residing.

As Miles approached the door, he placed both of his hands behind his back and effectively hide the letter behind his back. He entered the room and dipped his head in respect.

"Sir."

The grey haired man stood and began to approach Miles, "Where were you going?"

"I was heading towards the kitchen; I had gotten hungry and figured I should get a snack."

Von Karma's forehead crinkled as he began to circle Miles, his deep green eyes falling onto the letter, not so artfully hidden behind Miles' back.

Miles mentally slapped himself, for not knowing Von Karma wouldn't discover the letter tucked away behind his back.

He snatched up the letter and showed it to Miles.

"You should know better than to lie to me, boy. What is this?"

Miles grimaced and took a breath, "A letter, sir. To my friend from America."

Manfred's eyes narrowed as he eyed the boy.

"You've left that life behind, Edgeworth. It only stands to weight you down. Let it go and move on. A Von Karma thinks not of the past. We strive to be the best and if you are to remain in this household, you will to!" Von Karma snapped as he ripped the letter in half and threw it  into the roaring flames housed in the fireplace.

Miles watched it all with a straight face. His eyes fluttered shut and bowed, "Of course, sir."

Von Karma's back was facing Miles as he said, "You're dismissed. Complete your assignments and head to bed."

Miles took one more glance at the fireplace before silently taking his leave. He padded down the hallway and reentered his own chambers. His assignments had been completed hours ago and were left on his desk, ready for correction tomorrow. Miles gazed at his desk again and his grey irises land on the letter he had received earlier that day. He picked up the letter and ran his fingers over it. He smiled at the letter, then opened an empty box he had stored in his closet. He slipped it into the box and left the box by his desk. He then went to bed and slipped into a restless slumber.
