Chapter 1

Mid Afternoon.
Bright Sunlight streams into a room on the third floor of a building. Said room was filled with around 30 kids and one adult, circled around a small boy dressed in a blue t-shirt.
The discussion; the theft of $38.00 of lunch money.
"I swear, I didn't take it!"
"Liar!"
"Thief!"
"Crook!"
"No, that's not true! I promise."
"Liar! Thief! Crook!"
With a clap from the adult, the room quickly grew silence.
"Now Phoenix, please apologize and own up to your crimes.
"Ma'am, I didn't take the money."
The teacher sighed and repeated her sentence, "Fess up, Phoenix. I'll replace the money. Apologize to the class."
...
The spiked hair boy took a deep breath, but before he was about to apologize, a shout rang through the room.
"Objection!"
All eyes turned to another young boy, dressed in a grey jacket and red bow tie.
"Is there something you wish to say, Miles?
"This boy is innocent. There is no proof to say otherwise.
A young girl's voice counters with, "But Miles, it was your money that was stolen. Why are you protecting that thief?!"
Miles threw his hands onto his desk, making a loud sound to get everyone's attention. "The defendant pleads not guilty. Since no witnesses or evidence have been presented to counter his claim, he should be declared Not Guilty."
"Yeah! Old Nick would never take someone's money, it's not how he rolls. So you bullies can screw off and leave him alone," a boy with dirty blonde hair in an upward position added.
The teacher rolled her eyes, "Alright."
Miles smirked as he returned to his seat and calmly said, "Court is Adjourned."
The other students backed off the spiked hair boy as his differently colored eyes shone with relief. He rushed over to the boys who defended him.
"Larry and Miles, thanks a bunch for what you did for me!"
"Anything for a bro," Larry said, putting his arm over Phoenix's shoulder.
Miles stood and met Phoenix's gaze, "It was nothing."
They stood for a few seconds, before breaking their gaze.
"Although, you never did answer that girl's question. Why did you help me? It was your money that was stolen, right?
As soon as Phoenix mentioned that question, Miles' eyes shone with pride.
"My father, he's a defense attorney. It's his job to protect his clients and work to find the truth. He always lets me read his law books so I can give my input on his cases. I really want to become a defense attorney, just like him," Miles said, clearly prideful in his father's work. It was obvious that Miles looked up to his father and Phoenix couldn't help but smile.
"I'm sure that you'll become a great defense attorney, Miles!
A light blush crept onto the grey-haired boy and he smiled by at the spiked haired boy.
Before Miles had a chance to respond, the end of the school day was signaled by the bell. He watched Phoenix and Larry leave before he himself went to wait for his father to pick him up. As he waited, watching other kids heading to their cars, he couldn't help but think about the class trial today. He had noticed the genuine gratitude in Phoenix's oddly colored eyes. Why had he felt so touched when he came to his defense? He wasn't going to be punished so harshly, so what was his motive?
Miles was so deep in thought that he hadn't noticed his father's car pull up until he heard the horn of his father's car. He slung his bag over his shoulder and ran to the silver car. He greeted his father with a smile and they easily felt into a trivial chat.
'I guess I can ask him tomorrow..'
