When Bondita woke up, she found herself in a dark shack. It was slightly congested, full of dust, and Bondita knew that if she spent a long time here, she would begin having coughing fits, as the dust travelled into her lungs.
She had been lying on the cement floor, and she sat up immediately, adjusting her saree to cover herself better.
Where was she? How did she get here?
She stood up. Taking a few steps forward, arms extended so she could feel her way around, she found her foot step on something slightly squishy, yet also hard... almost like a person.
Bondita glanced down at the silhouette, and noticed that the figure was of a girl. A young one. She bent down to her knees and gently placed her hand on the girl's shoulder.
The girl woke up with a start, shivering.
She sat up, seeing Bondita there in the dark, her eyes adjusting to her face.
"Didi," the girl said, sounding frightened. Her voice was barely a whisper, and she looked around in the darkness. "G - Go back to sleep Didi."
Bondita looked at the girl with a confused expression.
"What is this place?" she whispered to the girl. "Where are we?"
"I don't know where we are Didi. But what's best is to sleep. Or p - pretend to sleep," the girl said, trembling. "Otherwise... if they h - hear you are awake, th - then..."
"Who?" Bondita asked, furrowing her brows.
This place was creepy as it was, and it was absolutely confusing how she got here, but Bondita knew that something was not right. When she passed out, someone must have taken her... either on the pretense of helping, or on the pretense of harming.
At the idea of harm, her hand found her stomach, a sudden fear filling her system. Not fear for her own life... but fear for another's.
"Tell me," Bondita repeated, looking at the shivering girl, "Who will hear us? What do they want? Where are we?"
"It's just us two girls here... but the men, they're vicious," the girl whispered, and now that her eyes had adjusted to the darkness, Bondita could make out the wounds on the young girl's face. Her cheek was red, almost as if it had been slapped multiple times. There was dirt on her face and arms. She was clad in a simple dark brown cotton saree, and had a simple locket around her neck. It was a small metal circular pendant, tied by a black thread. Her hair was messily braided.
Bondita sat down next to the girl, and gently held her shoulders.
"What happened to you?" she asked, glancing at the redness on her cheek, and the state of her appearance. "Are you okay?"
The girl had tears in her eyes and she said, "Didi... I'm not okay, nor will you be here."
Bondita cupped the girl's face and looked into her young, dark brown eyes.
"Tell me in detail. Please," she whispered.
"Didi..." the girl whispered, "With what face do I tell you such a shameful thing? I don't even understand much of it myself."
She shook slightly, and Bondita gripped her arms. "I was walking a few days ago with my Thakurda in my village. He is old, and he forgot the way back. These two men came and beat him. Then they took me with them. First they put a cotton pad to my mouth, and I was unconscious. When I woke up, I was here."
Bondita looked at the girl, worry and anger in her features. Who were these men and how dare they do such a thing to this young girl and her grandfather?
"Then... they came here, and gave me food once a day only. They said that the officer wants skinny girls."
"Officer?" Bondita asked, frowning. "What officer?"
"I - I haven't met him," the girl whispered. "I cried and begged for them to let me go, and they hit me. They said that by crying, my face will get swollen and I won't be beautiful. They were t - telling me, that I'm not that beautiful anyways, so they won't get a good price for me, and on top of that... my crying will make me more ugly. They were looking at me with such scary looks Didi. My insides shiver when I remember it."
"What?" Bondita barked, anger filling her veins. How dare they talk to her in such a nonsensical way, and hit her?
"The British officer is supposed to come tomorrow," the girl whispered, "To look at us. I heard them when they brought you in. They were saying that you're beautiful so you will have a high value. The officer will like you. I think he will buy us."
Bondita frowned, her heartbeat rising with anger. Intense anger. What ridiculous people, who thought that they could sell her to some officer! As if she was some object that could be sold. If her Pati Babu found out about this, they wouldn't be spared... and not just him, she wouldn't spare them either!
"Let's get out of here," Bondita whispered to the girl, and she stood up, feeling around with her arms, trying to find the door to the place.
"It's locked from outside. I tried," the girl whispered. "They're sleeping outside too."
Bondita's stomach started to grumble. She was extremely hungry. On top of that, if she didn't eat, she would certainly vomit.
"Don't worry, don't be scared," Bondita told her reassuringly. "I'll get us out of here."
"It's not so easy Didi," the girl said, standing up too, sounding frightened.
Bondita went back to the girl and placed her hands on her cheeks. She was about a head shorter than her.
"What's your name?" Bondita asked.
"Manoshi."
"How old are you?"
"Thirteen, Didi," the girl said, sounding frightened.
A deep pit was in her stomach. This young girl, was brought here by these abductors. Who knew what they were up to? And why did the British officer want to buy them? For sexual slavery? Did he want his own personal sex slaves? That was Bondita's best guess.
"I'm Bondita," she told the girl softly. "Trust me. I will get us out of here for sure."
"Didi, you don't understand they're dangerous!"
"I don't care how dangerous they are," Bondita told the girl sharply, intensity in her eyes, "I'm a hundred times more dangerous for them."
That was when there was a clinking on the door, as if a lock was being opened from the outside.
"Sleep Didi!" Manoshi said, sounding scared. "Pretend to!"
Bondita shook her head, needing the kidnappers to know who she was. Kidnapping Bondita Roy Choudhary was no less than a death sentence for any kidnapper, even if she wasn't as confident and fierce as she was. Her family would start a manhunt for these kidnappers without a doubt!
The girl just fell to the floor, her trembling hands curled over her chest, as she pretended to sleep.
When the lock opened, the two men appeared in front of her, and Bondita glared at them with her fiery eyes. The moonlight outside caused the room to light up a little more. On top of that, the younger man carried a standing torch inside. He placed the torch on the ground, and Bondita could now see everyone and everything clearly.
"She's awake," the older man said, glancing at her angry face.
Akhilesh Dada had a scruffy grey beard that descended past his chin, and he looked to be in his sixties. He was a lean man with thick grey eyebrows, and wrinkles around his eyes and forehead.
Ritesh looked her up and down, his hormones running wild inside of him.
"Ah, the beauty has awoken..." he said, and Bondita turned to give him an intense glare.
This one looked to be in his fourties. His hair was thick and black, with a few grey strands mixed in. He had a goatee beard and a moustache. He was muscular and tall, with a slightly bigger build. Fighting him would be incredibly difficult.
"Let us go," Bondita said immediately, referring to her and Manoshi.
"Why should we?" Ritesh questioned, "When we can get a great price for you."
Bondita sighed heavily and said, "Ohho! You are really not smart, are you?"
Ritesh and Akhilesh Dada exchanged confused glances, not expecting her to react this way. They were expecting her to plead and beg for them to let her go. Cry. But here, she was looking at them like they were stupid, with such a confidence, that they were almost second guessing themselves, and questioning if they really were stupid!
"Look, before you kidnapped me, you should have at least found out who I am," Bondita said, shaking her head, "Now, you've shot yourself in the foot already by kidnapping me without doing thorough research! You will probably be killed if you're lucky!"
Akhilesh Dada gulped slightly.
"Who are you?" Ritesh questioned darkly.
"Have you heard of the Roy Choudharys?" Bondita questioned, "Trilochan Roy Choudhary, the influential zamindar? Or Binoy Roy Choudhary, who has great ties with the British? Or Barrister Babu? The fitoori man who can do anything and everything? You've certainly heard of him right?"
Akhilesh Dada murmured to Ritesh, "That Barrister Babu is a crazy one. He's done many wild things in his fitoor!"
Bondita grinned proudly and she said, "Well, I'm that fitoori man's fitoori wife! Bondita Roy Choudhary!"
The colour drained from both Akhilesh Dada and Ritesh's face, as reality hit them of who exactly they had kidnapped.
"Since I'm Bondita Roy Choudhary, and I'm the daughter-in-law of such an influential family... do you think it was wise of you to bring me here?" Bondita said, shaking her head at them like they were the stupidest people ever. "Anyways, I won't give you any threats on their behalf. I'll even not tell them about you two. So the easy thing would be to just let us go... and you will be spared."
Of course, she was not going to spare them. But Bondita was clever. She was not going to tell them that she was setting a trap for them.
"Should we?" Ritesh whispered.
"Because she's from that family, we can get so much more for her," Akhilesh Dada whispered.
"But if they come after us? They can send the police," Ritesh said, sounding frightened.
"They won't find us. We'll sell her off first thing tomorrow."
Bondita furrowed her eyebrows and said, "If you're worried you will lose business and money, then remember that I'm a Roy Choudhary. My family can give you anything! Here, take their number!" She recited her phone number to them.
Ritesh scoffed and asked, "Your family will buy you?" while Akhilesh Dada memorized the number.
Bondita winced when he put it like that, but she inhaled sharply and said, "Just try calling them. They'll do anything for me!"
"What if we make more money from her family?" Ritesh whispered to Akhilesh Dada.
"More than what that British man can offer us?" Akhilesh Dada lowered his voice so that Bondita couldn't hear, and said, "We can hide her sindoor, shakha pola, and remove her alta. We can even sell her, claiming she's a virgin and unmarried. Then by the time they find out she wasn't a virgin, we will be long gone with the money. This is a fortune for us!"
Ritesh whispered, "Let's call the family and see what they will offer, then we will try our best with the officer. We will choose the one who gives us more money."
"The British officer wants her for business. He will make a lot of profit with her," Akhilesh Dada said, and this time, Bondita could hear. "He will certainly offer more."
"Profit?" Bondita questioned. "What does your officer want to use me for? Prostitution?"
The two of them looked at her with a confused glance, wondering how they should answer such a bold and unpredictable girl.
"You already know which family I'm part of! You should let me in on your plans, so that I will tell you whether they will be fruitful or not! Trust me, I've seen a lot as Barrister Babu's wife!"
Akhilesh Dada glared at Bondita and said, "You talk too much! And not only prostitution! He has a business. An adult entertainment business in Britain. He wants exotic girls to heighten his business, to use them in magazines, and shows... and who knows, maybe even sell them for a night to customers who pay a high sum for them!"
Bondita felt her insides crawl with disgust when she heard this. Sexual exploitation? They kidnapped her and Manoshi for a British officer, who had an adult entertainment business, and wanted to use them for their magazines?
"We'll be back! We have to discuss the sum for you," Akhilesh Dada said, and left the room with Ritesh, locking it, leaving Bondita there alone, making her heart feel heavy, and a shaky feeling enter her system.
She sunk to the ground, and held her stomach gently.
"They exploit girls for the entertainment of others?" Her mind thought back to the adult magazines she had seen in the English store, and also in her Pati Babu's study. He certainly wouldn't use anything that exploited girls like this... right? Her Pati Babu would surely know of this. She never asked him... for she never knew, that these were created like this.
Tears filled her eyes, as she suddenly felt for all those young girls who were forced into this life.
"It's one thing if you do it willingly, but to be forced into it, and not wanting to do it," she whispered to herself. "Being exploited like that... without your consent... how much these women must be suffering, because men only see them as objects for their desire."
Bondita glanced at Manoshi, who was still sleeping on the cold, hard floor. Thirteen. She was just thirteen. Her body was already skinny, and they wanted to make her skinnier. She probably didn't even know what all this meant... and here she was being sold as if she was an object, to a man who wanted to profit off her innocence.
She thought to her Pati Babu. He must be so worried about her. Extremely worried. And a deep feeling of guilt filled her system.
"I'm sorry," she cried, tears rolling down her cheeks. "I'm sorry Pati Babu. I shouldn't have come out... I should have stayed at home. You're probably running around looking for me right now... and I always only stress you out. I always only burden you." She sniffled, and she glanced at Manoshi. "B - But Pati Babu, this young girl. She would be alone if I wasn't here. S - So in a way it makes m - me happy to be here. For her. At least, now I can help her. We can help her. I know you'll come for me. You'll find me... I have full faith that you will. And you'll save the both of us."
Her stomach grumbled again.
"I'm sorry," she apologized to the baby. "You're hungry... and I have nothing to give you. But I will... I will find something."
Manoshi sat up from her fake sleep upon hearing this. She crawled over to Bondita and asked, "Didi... are you pregnant?"
Bondita looked at her and nodded, whispering, "Don't tell the men this."
Manoshi nodded, and she reached inside her blouse, where she had hidden a small cloth bag of some nuts.
"It's not much, but I had this from a few days ago when my Thakurda and I were walking. We always carry light snacks in case he gets hungry. I didn't eat it, because I didn't have the mood to eat in here..." she offered.
Bondita took the nuts from her and caressed her cheek.
"You're a God sent angel," she told the girl with a small smile. "Thank you."
"Didi, do you really think we can escape?" Manoshi asked, as Bondita untied the tiny cloth bag.
Bondita nodded. "I'm sure of it Manoshi."
A look of hope appeared in the young girl's eyes, as Bondita ate a few of the almonds, feeling a lot better already.
"Have one," Bondita said with a smile, and placed an almond to her lips.
Manoshi opened her mouth as Bondita fed her the almond.
All of a sudden, she felt the young girl hug her tightly from beside her, clinging on to her as if she was the only hope in the girl's life.
"You won't leave me and go, right Didi?"
"Never," Bondita whispered back to her, and wrapped her arm around her. "We will both get out of here together."
Manoshi sunk against Bondita's shoulder, closing her eyes. "I don't have a Didi. Only two Dadas. There are women in my household, but nobody has made me feel so safe like you Didi. Nobody."
Tears filled Bondita's eyes and she just hugged Manoshi lightly, as she slept against Bondita's shoulder.
Just like her Pati Babu had once been that shoulder for her, the hope of light in the darkness for Bondita. It felt like, now, she was strong enough to emit that same light on her own. Now, she could also be that source of light to illuminate someone else, and guide them on a path to freedom.
Pati Babu, you have already rubbed off on me in every way... but now even the brightness of your light, can be felt within me. Manoshi sees your flame within me. This is why she can have a peaceful sleep in this hell tonight. It's only because of you.

Precap:
Anirudh was driving with Manika, while they searched for Bondita.
"I'm mad at her! So mad at her, for doing this. She shouldn't have. But it's my fault Manika," Anirudh cried, as he drove the car in the direction of Krishnanagar, "I should have known she would do something like this. H - How would she leave me alone in this state? How could I not foresee my Bondita's actions? How could I not see that she would run after me... not able to leave me alone in any state? I should have brought her with me. It's all my fault! I'm so mad at her, but I'm m - more mad at myself! If she's in danger, it's because of me. Only because of me!"
He was crying as he drove, his heart feeling like it was squeezed and suffocated, as he searched desperately for his Bondita.

I don't know how many of you remember, but during the romance novels/magazines track, I wrote in one of my notes about how there is a part about the exploitation of women, which we will explore in a future track. This is that track, and it's interconnected with the pregnancy track in a beautiful way. You'll see when it all plays out. It won't be a long track. Just a few chapters, but I hope they are powerful chapters.
Any thoughts about the sexual exploitation of young girls/the reason behind kidnapping Bondita?
What did you think about Manoshi?
Do leave your comments/thoughts about the chapter!
Any future predictions?
