When Vikram entered Batuk's room again, he looked at the three others inside, a look of hesitation on his face.
"What is it?" Batuk asked, right away, standing up and going over to him. "Am I going to be Super Chachu or not?"
Vikram looked at Batuk, then Surabhi, then Mallika, saying, "You all have to promise, you won't tell anyone."
"Promise ji!" Mallika said first.
"I won't tell anyone," Surabhi agreed.
"Vikrammmmmmm am I gonna be Super Chachu or not?" Batuk just whined.
"Promise Batuk!" Vikram said first.
"Just promise ji!" Mallika urged, frowning, "Stop being so immature!"
"ImMatURE?!" Batuk's scream dramatically got louder and quieter between the syllables of the word.
"Batuk, promise Vikram," Surabhi said, frowning too.
"FINE, I promise! Who will I tell anyways?" Batuk huffed.
Vikram finally said, "Yes, Bondita is pregnant."
"OH MY GOD!" Batuk screamed, jumping into the air, holding his arms up like he was holding a baby, "I REALLY AM GOING TO BE A SUPER CHACHU!"
"Shut up Batuk," Mallika hissed at him, "This isn't about you. It's about Bondita."
Batuk frowned. Why couldn't he be excited? Mallika was such a party pooper!
Vikram nodded with agreement and he said, "Yes, calm down Batuk... we have a more important matter in our hands."
Surabhi had a light smile on her lips when she heard about Bondita's pregnancy, but upon hearing Vikram's concern, her smile faded.
"Is there a problem Vikram?" Surabhi asked.
"PROBLEM? OH NO!" Batuk gasped dramatically.
"You're so loud ji, can you keep quiet for two minutes so Vikram can explain?" Mallika snapped.
Batuk gulped and placed his hands over his mouth. It wasn't his fault! He was just so excited!
He could still remember the first time that Bondita thought she was pregnant after jumping on the bed with her Pati Babu! Batuk had been the first to know! They had been so excited to play with her imaginary baby!
Vikram took a deep breath and explained, "The problem is that Bondita's Pati Babu doesn't know about it yet. And Mishti said not to tell anybody... to let Bondita handle it. So, we should just support her, and not interfere."
"What? Why doesn't Big D know?" Batuk snapped.
He was clearly getting accustomed to the name Big D.
"Let's go and ask Bondita ourselves," Vikram suggested. "She'll be able to explain her state better."
"Good idea," Surabhi nodded.
Mallika just asked, "But should we even ask her? It's her problem right? Aren't we interfering in her personal life?"
Batuk frowned and glared at Mallika. He was about to say something mean to her, when Vikram quickly interjected.
"We're her best friends Mallika. If we don't show her our support, how will she know that she has us?" Vikram asked her.
"Yeah, Mallika," Batuk huffed. "And it's not just her problem. But my problem too! I'm going to be the Super Chachu after all!"
Surabhi rolled her eyes and said, "You're going to spoil Bondita's child silly."
"Of course, it's my right," Batuk said, and he grinned with pride, his eyes already glossing over all of the dreams he was seeing of being Super Chachu number 1!
--
Bondita was sitting on the floor in her room, leaning forward against a small stand where she was about to write her letter to her Pati Babu.
The parchment was blank so far. She was trying to think of how to word it perfectly.
That was when the door flung open, and the gang walked in.
Batuk gasped out a horrifying sound, when he saw Bondita on the floor. He ran over to her, and her eyes widened, as she felt his not so strong arms lift her up from the ground.
"BATUK!" Bondita gasped, as he held her, her legs over his arm, his other arm supporting her back. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? PUT ME DOWN!"
"Why are you on the floor Boudi?" Batuk asked, sounding upset and hurt. "You have to take care of yourself!"
Mallika was rolling her eyes, and even Surabhi had her hand pressed to her head right now.
Vikram was the clever one who locked the door before anyone could hear their screams.
"Put me down this instant Batuk Roy Choudhary!" Bondita demanded, "You'll drop me!"
"How can this hero drop you Boudi? Don't be silly!"
Bondita was not feeling safe in his arms at all!
"Batuk," she said in a warning tone.
Batuk just grinned, while holding Bondita up, saying, "This Super Chachu can never ever drop yours and Big D's baby!"
When Bondita heard this, her eyes went wide, and Batuk gently sat Bondita down on the bed.
"W - what did you say?" Bondita asked, relieved that he finally put her down.
Then she looked at Vikram, who nodded.
"We know Bondita. We know that you're pregnant," Vikram confirmed.
Bondita's mouth fell open, as she looked from Batuk, to Vikram, to the girls.
"Are you serious? How do you know?" she demanded.
Vikram gulped and said, not wanting to give Manika away, "It doesn't matter --"
"It's because I'm a great detective," Batuk intervened.
"You didn't do anything ji, Vikram did all the work!" Mallika said.
Batuk turned to glare at Mallika yet again.
Why did she always have to spoil the fun for him?
Surabhi sat down next to Bondita and took her hand gently, asking, "Why is your pregnancy affecting your school grades Bondita?"
Vikram sat down next to Bondita on the other side and said softly, "I know you're scared to tell your Pati Babu... but you have to tell him somehow right? Why don't you take the load off your shoulders?"
Batuk looked from Surabhi to Vikram, wondering where he would sit now.
Screw it, he thought, and Mr. Chote Zamindaar Batuk Roy Choudhary, the Super Chachu sat on the floor in front of Bondita. Anything for his nephew!
Mallika stood off to the side, watching, but not sure how she could give any advice.
"I'm going to tell him... I'm going to write a letter to him," Bondita said softly to Vikram and Surabhi. "You don't have to worry about me. I'm fine."
"A letter?" Batuk asked, furrowing his brows, as his eyes landed on the blank sheet of parchment, "You're going to tell Big D that he's having a son, through a letter?"
"A son?" Bondita asked, and looked at Batuk fiercely, "My - The baby could be a girl too, can't it?"
She was softening up a lot towards the baby in her womb, but despite a few slipups, she was still afraid to call it her baby. She felt like she didn't have the right to accept this fully, without her Pati Babu's acceptance too.
Batuk sighed heavily and said, "I want a nephew!"
Bondita rolled her eyes. He sounded like a child who was demanding a baby boy from his mother.
"And if it's a girl, you won't love your niece?" Bondita asked, somehow her heart feeling warm while having this conversation.
"Of course I would! But if you have a boy, then I can make him take after me!" Batuk said.
"Then Bondita, it's better you have a daughter... they shouldn't take after Batuk, even though they say sons are who give honour to the family," Mallika said.
She had sounded like she had a sadness in her voice when she said this. It was like she had some personal experiences related to this.
Batuk glared at Mallika once again, at the sheer insult.
Vikram said, "My parents had two daughters after me, and they don't feel like their honour went anywhere."
"That's because their first born, which is you, was a boy ji," Mallika explained, with a heavy heart.
"Yes, Kaka would like a grandson," Batuk confirmed, "I'm sure of it."
Bondita took a deep breath, glaring at everyone now.
"Can we not talk about the sex of the baby yet?" Bondita asked. "There are other things on my mind."
Like how to write this letter to her Pati Babu...
"Oh Boudi, you're worried about telling Big D, aren't you? You think he'll get mad, scream, yell?" Batuk asked.
"No. I'm worried he'll blame himself and hurt himself," Bondita corrected. "Because he doesn't want any distractions on my path to becoming a barrister."
She wished he would just get mad, scream and yell. She would be able to handle that.
This was going to cut much deeper than all of that.
"I have a simple solution for all of this," Batuk said.
"What is it?" Bondita asked, looking at Batuk, almost with a glimmer of hope.
"You're writing a letter right? Write that you've been kidnapped and you're in huge danger! I'll write it in some other handwriting! So he won't know it's you!" Batuk suggested.
"What?" Bondita gasped.
"Yes, then on the next page, we will write just kidding, you aren't kidnapped or in danger, but instead, you're pregnant!" Batuk concluded, feeling very smart for this plan. "After all, your life would be more important, then your pregnancy will seem like a relief!"
Mallika glanced at Batuk, almost impressed.
Even Surabhi looked quite impressed by this. She looked at Batuk and praised, "You are creative Batuk."
Batuk gave her a cheeky grin and said, "Finally I'm getting the appreciation I deserve."
Vikram looked nervous about it, and Bondita as well.
"That'll make him maybe temporarily feel relieved," Vikram said, "But once the first few seconds of relief passes, the shock may return."
Bondita nodded and said, "That won't work in the long run."
Batuk sighed, his heart feeling heavy, feeling like his brilliance was turned down again.
"I don't get it, why don't you just tell him?" Mallika asked. "He should be happy to be a father."
Bondita shook her head and said, "Pati Babu is different."
Surabhi was in deep thought and she said, "Bondita, just write it from your heart. Don't think so much. He will feel your emotions if you just write it truthfully and with meaning."
Vikram nodded in agreement.
"Yes, I agree. That should work," Vikram said. "He might still not be happy, but at least, it might help."
Bondita nodded.
"Okay, I'll try it... I have to do this today. And then tomorrow, I'll give him the letter," Bondita said nervously.
Batuk looked at Bondita, an excited glimmer in his eyes, "Boudi, the whole haveli will be so happy. Even if he's sad, his sadness will be uplifted in no time by everyone else."
Bondita just looked at Batuk and gave him a small smile. She didn't know what would happen when she confessed the truth to him. She just hoped that Batuk wasn't being too excited only to have his heart get broken in the end.
Anything could happen, and Batuk's excitement getting crushed would hurt her too.
"Keep this to yourselves please," she asked all of them.
"Of course," Vikram said, "I made them all promise already."
"Boudi, but you know if Kaka finds out, then he'll host a party in all of Tulsipur," Batuk pointed out.
Bondita shook her head, her eyes widening.
"Please, Kakasasurji can not find out! He has to be the last to find out!" Bondita begged.
"I won't tell him anything," Batuk informed.
"Good," Bondita said with a sigh.
"What happened with the history test Bondita?" Vikram asked
Bondita gulped and she answered, "I got 34%."
A loud shrill escaped Batuk's mouth when he heard that his Boudi got 34%. Even Mallika and Surabhi had their eyes wide with shock.
"It's okay! Let's study now!" Vikram suggested.
"I tried... I can't focus," Bondita said, looking down and sounding defeated.
"I'll help you. Where's your textbook?" Vikram asked, and Bondita pointed to her desk.
Batuk groaned at the idea of having a study session as a group, especially after hearing such amazing news!
He leaned in Surabhi's ear and whispered, "Let's go to my room while these people study."
Surabhi looked at Batuk with a blush, and she said, "Bondita needs us."
"Trust me, she doesn't need us to study," Batuk said, "Vikram is more than capable of handling her. We're only going to make her feel weird here if we watch her while she studies."
"Fair enough," Surabhi said, and stood up to leave with Batuk.
Before he left, he leaned dangerously close to Bondita, making her look at him with a raised eyebrow, leaning back slightly on her bed.
"What are you doing --" Bondita started, but he had placed his hand on her belly over her saree.
"Super Chachu will be back little one," Batuk said with happy grin.
Bondita glared at Batuk and dramatically said, "Personal space!"
"As if you ever cared about that with me!" Batuk huffed, as he left the room with Surabhi.
As he left, Batuk rolled his eyes. He couldn't even count the number of times she invaded his personal space!
Bondita couldn't help but smile now. That was true. It seemed like they had already invaded each other's personal space too much through their time together to be worried about such a thing.
Regardless, she felt a strange warmth when Batuk had touched her belly too. Her baby's so-called super chachu would really love him or her so much, and she was very touched to see this.
Mallika watched with a slight suspicion as Batuk and Surabhi left the room, wondering where they were going all alone.
--
Somehow, with Vikram's help, she had gotten many concepts from the previous test down. She was extremely grateful to Vikram for making her feel productive today with her studies as well.
The gang had left now, and it was getting late.
Bondita had also finished writing her letter, and she was seated behind her desk. She read it through one more time.
Dear Pati Babu,
You've filled your Bondita's life with so much love, so much meaning, and so many dreams. Without your support, I wouldn't have been here. I wouldn't have reached these heights that you've brought me to.
I need your support again Pati Babu. I need your love again.
Please read this letter with an open mind.
Many times, life doesn't go the way we expect it to. You've also faced many situations in your life where you weren't prepared for what was happening. Shubhra Maa passed away when you were a child, and nobody expected it. But somehow, life went on, and everyone moved on. Her memories still lingered, yes, but that didn't stop anyone from moving ahead in their lives anymore.
Similarly, you married me when I was a child, and you felt like your life was ruined. You felt like you had committed a great sin, and you went through hell for it... but didn't what you imagined to be a curse, turn into the biggest blessing of your life? Wasn't I, the person you tortured yourself so much over marrying, the one who ended up being everything to you?
We fell apart and I got stuck in Hiramandi... you went through grief and pain, but in the end, that pain was also momentary, and we united again, right?
Kakasasurji tried to force you to be physically intimate with me when I was a child... you pushed yourself away from me, found a rebound in someone else, tried to love another woman. But it only brought you closer to me, right?
I had deep feelings for you, and wanted to attain you, I wanted to possess you. You had to turn strict, you had to be harsh, and break my mind... only to empower me, to make me stronger and self-sufficient right?
We didn't talk for a whole year. We loved each other, but we spent our time apart in the same haveli... never interacting. Barely looking at each other. That year apart, brought us closer than ever, right?
I went to Thakumaa's for my school holidays, and even though one would think we got separated, we really ended up getting closer, didn't we? Our layers of physical intimacy began to shed, and we started to become one in every sense, right?
When Thakumaa wanted me to marry Chandrachur, and my leg was infected, you sacrificed yourself, our dreams, and allowed me to go... just for the sake of my leg. But in the end, what happened? Didn't I come right back to you, just like a boomerang? Didn't the universe conspire in such a way where we were reunited?
You thought that your sacrifices for my dreams went in vain at that time... but did they? Didn't what you think was the end, lead to a new beginning between us?
Ever since then, we have brought changes in menstruating girls in my school. We've saved Manika Didi from her abusive marriage. I've learned under you, as your intern. You did some side projects too.
We've crossed many hurdles together. We've explored so many avenues of love and intimacy. We've faced many problems.
But throughout this all, did our dreams ever die? Even when it seemed like they were being threatened? No. Because we always found a solution. There always was one.
Just like that, Pati Babu, there is another test that life is throwing our way. But we will overcome this too. We will see how this won't be a hindrance, but rather it'll be a memory, we will look fondly at this moment one day, just like everything else.
Pati Babu... the contraceptive pills got exchanged the last time we went to Thakumaa's haveli together. And, I'm pregnant.
Keep reading. Don't look away yet. Don't cry yet.
Your Bondita will still be a barrister. She will still reform society with you. Nothing will happen to your Bondita.
Your love is what keeps her strong. Your faith is what keeps her going.
Just like we faced everything else, we will face this too. We will use this to be stronger.
I will prove it to you Pati Babu... I will prove it that we can do this.
But I can't do it without you... you have always been there to guide me. You have to guide me now too.
Read the letter one more time Pati Babu.
Please come and find me as soon as you have read this. Your Bondita needs you. She needs you very much.
Love,
Your Bondita
Bondita had tears in her eyes as she wrote the letter. There were some hard blotches on the parchment where tears had fallen and dried.
She folded the letter in three, and placed it inside an envelope. She wrote, For Pati Babu on the envelope.
That was when the door opened and he entered.
Bondita looked up at him, nearly jumping in her seat, as he entered the room, her fingers shaking as she gripped the envelope in her hands.
It was midnight.
