Anirudh walked out from the school, the test paper folded in his hands.
The skies were cloudy and grey, and he took a deep breath, his heart aching, as he recalled the principal's words to him in the office.
Bondita got 34%.
His topper Bondita, didn't just score a few marks less, but she had scored 34%.
How was he supposed to process this? This had never happened before.
Bondita had always assured him that she would do well in her studies. She had always rolled her eyes at him whenever he would demand that she focus on school. Bondita definitely listened to him, she respected him and valued his words, but she always told him he was overreacting because she would indeed do well. With confidence.
And he believed her.
If he hadn't, he would have never let their relationship be a distraction between them.
His priorities were always clear. Studies were her number one focus at this age.
Making her a barrister was the one dream he had for her, before everything else. She was meant for that. The pen in her hand would empower not only herself, but so many others.
And 34%? That couldn't get her admission for higher studies. That was far from enough.
How could it be, that in her final year of school -- the year where she herself knew that grades mattered, it looked like she hadn't even studied?
When he went to Calcutta, Bondita had assured him that she had been studying. She assured him that everything was okay. Then how did this happen?
He remembered from last night, how Bondita had been avoiding him. How she couldn't meet his eyes.
This must be why.
She practically failed her test, and she couldn't even look at him.
"You won't understand..." she had said.
And she was right. How could he understand this? It didn't even make sense.
He took a deep breath. His heart already felt shattered, his breaths rugged. He felt like he could cry.
He was prepared for many shocks with Bondita, but this kind of shock? Related to her studies? After years of doing so well, it was a hard blow to him. One he could never be prepared for. One that shed a negative light towards their dreams.
No... he knew Bondita.
She wouldn't do this poorly. Not unless there was a reason. Perhaps... perhaps, the teacher didn't give her any time. Maybe she had some problem. Maybe there was some bigger reason.
No... he wouldn't yell at her.
He would ask her nicely, what the problem was.
Yes, that was what he decided to do.
Thankfully, this was just a test, and probably wouldn't count for much. They could still resolve this. He was especially thankful to the principal for bringing this to his attention, so that he could figure this out as soon as possible.
So he waited for Bondita outside of the school.
When school ended, he noticed Batuk come out with Vikram, Surabhi and Mallika. The four of them looked very serious.
They approached Anirudh by the gate, noticing him there.
"Where's Bondita?" Anirudh asked.
"Shit," Batuk grumbled. "We're all dead."
Anirudh raised his eyebrows at Batuk.
"Bondita's inside talking to the teacher. She'll probably come out soon, Bondita's Pati Babu!" Vikram answered right away.
"Oh... she's talking to the teacher?" Anirudh asked, glancing towards the entrance doors and nodding. "Alright."
"Are you waiting for Boudi?" Batuk asked, gulping.
Anirudh glanced at Batuk and said, "Yes."
"Uhhhhhh... why don't you come home with us?" Batuk asked, gulping nervously again.
Anirudh looked at Batuk with a dark look, and Batuk felt his throat get dry.
"Batuk, let's go! Mr. ARC doesn't look to be in a good mood," Surabhi said.
"Yes, Bondita's Pati Babu doesn't seem to be in a good mood, but it's okay, he is a very generous, kind person even when he's in a bad mood!" Vikram praised.
Anirudh glanced at Vikram, eyeing him slightly sternly, wondering whether the boy was insulting him or praising him.
"You know how to sugarcoat things ji," Mallika said lightly.
"Sugarcoating? No way! Bondita's Pati Babu is really the nicest! There's no sugarcoating! His bad mood itself is his compassion! You just don't know him like I do Mallika!"
Anirudh blinked a few times, his heart melting ever so slightly with Vikram's words, and he softly said, "Get going, all of you."
"At least his mood seems a bit better thanks to Vikram," Surabhi said lightly.
Batuk nervously said, "Big D's unpredictable!"
Anirudh heard Big D and he glared at Batuk.
Batuk yelled, "LET'S GO EVERYONE!" before his Big D would unleash his anger right here, on him!
And then he started to run away from Anirudh, as Anirudh watched, shaking his head slightly.
The rest of them smiled and followed Batuk, leaving Anirudh by the school gates as they went to the haveli.

Chandrachur was fuming.
Thakumaa wasn't allowing the abortion. She wanted to keep the devil in Bondita's womb!
Chandrachur had still been making sure Bondita didn't go back to that warehouse, by keeping a watch on her. Whenever he couldn't be there, he had hired people to make sure she didn't do anything dangerous to herself.
Her life, her health mattered the most to Chandrachur. More than getting rid of that Devil!
Today, he decided to meet her after school.
He had to speak to her anyhow, in case she lost faith in his words. He had assured her that he would speak to Thakumaa for her, and now he needed to buy more time, because he would look for another doctor, a safe one, who could perform the abortion for Bondita.
He hadn't noticed Anirudh standing there... but even if he had, then perhaps he wouldn't change what he was going to do. After all, if Anirudh caught them, then perhaps it was a winning situation for him.
Anirudh was still waiting for Bondita, when his eyes landed on Chandrachur a little distance away.
A shock filled his system when he saw the man.
What was Chandrachur doing here?
--
Bondita had a small smile on her lips as she reminisced Jayadrath Sir's words. He had given her the right motivation at the right time.
As soon as she went home, she would study. She would learn everything properly again and get a perfect score on next week's test. She was determined to do it!
It was like Sir's words had breathed life into her!
She was planning the rest of the evening in her mind -- she would start by making coffee for her Pati Babu after she changed out of her school uniform, and then she would go straight to work. Yes, that sounded right.
She was so lost in her thoughts, that as she walked by, she hadn't noticed Anirudh, who was now standing slightly off from the gate, not even in her line of sight.
She took a few steps forward, when Chandrachur called out, "Bondita!"
Bondita was awoken from her thoughts, and her eyes landed on the tall man. She went up to him, wondering if he had anything to tell her that she didn't already know.
"It's been so hard trying to contact you," Chandrachur said, "I've spoken to Thakumaa."
"I know... she told me," Bondita told him, "She told me that she won't do it."
Chandrachur nodded, looking sorry about this.
Anirudh was a little distance away, and he was even more surprised to see Bondita approach Chandrachur. He couldn't hear what they were saying, but clearly they were having a serious discussion.
Why did Chandrachur come all the way to Bondita's school to meet her?
Was everything fine with Tupur?
But then Thakumaa could have called the haveli, if there was any problem, right? Why did Chandrachur need to come all this way?
"I'll still find another solution for you. We will go to another doctor, one who will do it effortlessly. Don't worry, I'll find a great doctor!" Chandrachur told her. "I gave you my word Bondita, so I won't let you down."
Bondita looked at Chandrachur, her heart sinking again, at the prospect of going through with an abortion.
"I... think..." she started nervously.
"Yes?"
"I think... I won't have one now," Bondita told him. "I will... tell my Pati Babu first. Discuss it with him... and then see what he thinks... we should do."
Chandrachur looked at Bondita, an irritated feeling filling his system.
"Why?" he asked right away, feeling very angry to hear this.
That Anirudh Roy Choudhary would never abort his own heir, his own bloodline! And this Devil could keep Anirudh and Bondita together for longer!
Bondita looked at Chandrachur with a frown, "Well, because he's everything to me. So I care about what he thinks."
"Why were you going to abort your baby before then?" Chandrachur asked.
Bondita looked at Chandrachur, a fiery look entering her eyes now, and Chandrachur gulped nervously, seeing the intensity in her eyes.
"I don't have to answer your questions because it's none of your business Jamai Babu! But because you... saved me that day, because you tried to help me... I'll answer."
Bondita took a deep breath and confessed, "It's because I love him, and I don't want him to suffer. I thought that if he doesn't know about this, then he would be happier. And I could treat the abortion as the reversal of a m - mistake." Her voice shook towards the end, her palms feeling sweaty, and they began to tremble.
Chandrachur's hands balled into fists as he heard this love confession from this crazy girl.
"I am genuinely grateful for you, to not let me do that abortion Jamai Babu. But... I don't think I need your help any longer," Bondita said softly. "So don't worry about me."
Chandrachur glared at her and he hissed, "So you think I did all of this, just so you can change your mind in the end? You think I drove here all the way, to hear these bitter words from you? Do you think I couldn't have written you a letter instead of driving this way? I came this way because I care --"
Bondita didn't hear the rest of his words after letter, because he had given her an idea.
An amazing idea.
Her and her Pati Babu had always been connected through letters, ever since the very first letter she wrote to him from her village. The letter with two conditions for marriage.
There were many instances throughout their time together and apart, where letters united them, ended their misunderstandings, and helped them find their way to each other.
Even this time, Bondita would write a letter to him! She would confess everything in that letter and tell him. He would have time to feel all her emotions, to process it, and then to react if she did this in a clever way.
"Thank you so much Jamai Babu!" Bondita said, looking at Chandrachur with an excited look in her eyes. "You don't know, but you've saved me yet again!"
"Huh?" Chandrachur just asked, looking at Bondita with a boggled look. "What are you saying --"
"Sorry, I have to go now!" she just said, and started to rush towards the haveli.
The whole time, Anirudh had watched their encounter from a distance. Their facial expressions weren't clear, but it seemed like the conversation had gone from a serious one, to one where Bondita looked quite happy, as if she realized something.
He glanced at Chandrachur suspiciously, and he too departed to the haveli, deciding that he would speak to her in the haveli itself.
As soon as Bondita got home, she went upstairs to get changed first.
Anirudh entered the bedroom not long after, as Bondita was wrapping a purple saree around herself. He had placed the test paper in his study before coming here.
"Bondita," Anirudh said in a stern voice.
"Hmm Pati Babu?" Bondita asked, as she pinned her saree in the right spots.
"Is there something you want to tell me?" he asked.
"Yes!" Bondita said thinking about her pregnancy confession in the letter -- now that this letter idea came up, Bondita was quite excited to write it. She was certain she could pull this off in a way that could dampen the blow to her Pati Babu!
Then realizing what she said, her face flushed, as she looked up at him, "I mean... uh... I love you Pati Babu!"
Anirudh looked at her suspiciously. He was not talking about her words which were sweeter than roshogullas. He wanted to hear from her mouth about two things -- her test, and Chandrachur.
"You won't say anything?" she asked, pouting, finishing with her saree.
She then began to pick up her jewelry pieces and wore them one by one.
Anirudh approached her and asked, "Why did you take so long to come home Bondita?"
"I was talking to my teacher," she just answered, slipping on her second earring.
"Is that all? Did you come straight home after that?" he asked, in a dangerously calm voice.
Bondita looked in the mirror, as she took some sindoor, and applied extra in her hairline. She already had some from the morning, but she just loved applying it again and again!
"Yes Pati Babu, I came home right after," Bondita answered nonchalantly, not thinking much about it, as she slid on some golden bangles.
Anirudh felt his heart twist when he heard this, and he looked at Bondita with a stare that grew darker.
Why was Bondita lying to him?
First she had gone to Krishnanagar two days before he arrived, randomly, even though she had school the next day, by taking the car herself with Batuk. Then she practically failed her test... and he knew there were reasons that she wasn't telling him. Bondita just couldn't score like that without a reason. Perhaps the Krishnanagar incident was connected with the failed test.
Now, she met Chandrachur, and she was lying to him about her meeting.
Bondita... I can't figure out where you have entangled yourself. I don't know which web you have lost yourself in. And this web is trapping me too. Your lies are entangling me as well. When will you be honest with me? Why aren't you letting me in? Why are you hiding things from me?
Her lies were hurting him, making his heart ache, shatter.
He had full faith in her, and nothing could break that... but today, it felt like a new distance had formed between them.
He looked at her with his dark look, the pain in his heart, not quite reflecting on his face. He had kept his pain buried there. He didn't allow it to come out. Not yet.
Jhooth tera uljha dhaga
Sira na haath mei aaye,
Ek bharosa hai khafa saa
Koi isse samjhaye,
Koi aasha momb si hai
Jo dhoop seh na paaye,
Tujhko ambar naapna tha
Aa gayi tu zameen par,
Tune toda kyu bharosa mera...
Rishta tera mera Rishta tera mera
Rishta tera mera Rishta tera meraaaa
He took a deep breath, pushing Chandrachur's matter to the back of his mind, and trying to compose himself.
Whatever reason Chandrachur spoke to Bondita for was secondary.
His focus was on her test.
"Bondita... do you know your Principal called me today?" Anirudh asked her, his expressions holding dark undertones.
Now Bondita looked up at him, her heart hammering hard, the fresh newfound shine and hope from today, leaving her face. She turned to look at him, her eyes widening.
"W - what did he say P - Pati Babu?"
"He showed me your test paper. Where you scored 34%," Anirudh said, his tone dangerously calm. "Can you... tell... me... what... happened." Each word was enunciated, and he didn't sound angry, yet, there was a deeper intensity behind his words, one that only got fueled further by her lies.
And finally at the end, he finished with... "Bondita?" Almost in a desperate tone, to let him in, to tell him what the problem was... because her sorrows, her struggles, were his as well.
Bondita looked at him, her eyes wide, her heart hammering with fear.
How would she answer him now?

I hope you enjoyed this chapter!
The intensity is building up, and your most-awaited climax of Anirudh finding out the truth is approaching. All of the events are unfolding and coming together in a way which may be suspenseful and nail-biting, but I definitely hope, intriguing!
Also remember, both Anirudh and Bondita have their own share of struggles. Nobody is perfect, but they're both trying their best. They're both equally right and they're both equally wrong, and I hope I am doing justice to both of their characters. ❤️
