Chapter 6: Home cooking

Narrator:The next day, Jayden and Lily woke up and had breakfast with Samuel and Camilla. After breakfast, Jayden and Lily went back to their room, while Samuel and Camilla go to work. However, it feels like something is missing in the twins' lives.

*Camilla is working at the diner. She goes into the kitchen and lets out an exhausted sigh. The only person in the kitchen with her was Elizabeth*

Elizabeth:"Hey, Cam."

Camilla:"Oh, sorry. I thought nobody was in here."

Elizabeth:"Is something bothering you?"

Camilla:"Yeah. How are you able to juggle more than one job, Elizabeth?"

Elizabeth:"What do you mean?"

Camilla:"You work as a cook here, at the mall, and I assume you have other places too."

Elizabeth:"Of course, how else would I improve my cooking?"

Camilla:"How are you able to do that?"

Elizabeth:"Huh...I've never really thought about how I do it, I just do it. My motivation to be a good cook drives me, so maybe you just need to find your motivation."

Camilla:"My motivation?"

*Camilla continued with her work until closing, and went back home as the moon shined through the village streets. She prepared dinner, and went up to Jayden and Lily's room.*

Camilla:"Hey, you two. Dinner is ready, so come down and eat."

Lily:"Ok!"

Jayden:"Fine."

*The three of them head to the dining room and eat dinner*

Lily:"Mama, where's papa?"

Camilla:"Papa is out working right now, he won't be back until late."

Lily:"Aw man! I miss him."

Camilla(mind):Alright, I need to be a good mom for these two.

Jayden:"Who cares about him. You're too obsessed Lily."

Lily:"No, I'm not. He's our papa now."

Jayden:"No, he's not!"

*The twins started arguing, and fighting each other*

Camilla(mind):How am I going to do that?!

*They finish dinner, and the twins get ready for bed. Camilla went upstairs to their room, and knocked on their door*

Camilla:"Lily? Jayden? Are you two ready for bed?"

Lily:"I am! Jayden isn't getting in his bed."

Jayden:"I don't wanna! Why do I have to go to sleep?"

Camilla(mind):Ugh...I don't think I can be a good mother at all.

*The next morning, Camilla had the day off from her work. She decided to walk around the town with Lily*

Lily:"Are we going to the mull again, mama?"

Camilla:"No, we're going to pick up some ingredients for dinner."

Lily:"And the moll doesn't have them?"

Camilla:"No, it doesn't. They are at this place called a grocery store."

Lily:"A grow-sherry shore?"

Camilla:"Yeah, it's full of food that you can make. Some of it's from many different regions too."

Lily:"Oh, I've tried food from different regions before. Some of it's pretty good."

Camilla:"Really? You've traveled before?"

Lily:"Yeah! Me and Jayden traveled the whole world when we were younger. He would always protect me from harm, and I loved traveling with him."

Camilla:"Huh..."

Camilla(mind):I didn't think Jayden was like that. He doesn't have any manners, but he protects his sister from harm...

Lily:"Ooo, mama! There's this one dish I tried with Jayden that he always loved."

Camilla:"Really? What is it, maybe I could make it for us tonight."

Lily:"Yay! Ok, the dish is this weird creature that swims in water, but it also walks on land. There are small and big ones. Every time we ate one, Jayden would eat all of them.

Camilla:"Swims in water but walks on land...like a crab?"

Lily:"A crap, that's what it is."

Camilla:"Alright, lucky us. Seafood was my specialty where I grew up."

Lily:"Really? This is going to be the best crap ever!"

Camilla:"Uh...Try not to say crab in public, alright?"

Lily:"Huh?"

Camilla:"Let's just go get the crab."

*Camilla bought the ingredients, and walked back home with Lily. While on their way back, they encountered a monster in between the town and their house*

Camilla:"Watch your step, Lily."

*Camilla waves her arm in the direction of the monster, and it was suddenly blown away*

Lily:"Whoa!" What was that?"

Camilla:"It must be getting windy, better get inside quickly."

Lily:"O-Ok!"

Camilla(mind):Not having Sam here makes the house in danger of monsters. I'd have to put up another barrier around the house for tonight.

*Camilla and Lily got back to their house, and Camilla set up a magical barrier around the house*

Camilla(mind):Phew, hopefully that'll keep the monsters away. I'll have to tell Sam when he gets back.

*The two girls headed inside, and saw that Jayden was sleeping on the couch*

Lily:"Hehe...hey, Jayden! We've got dinner. It's your favorite!"

Camilla:"Lily told you liked crab a lot, so I bought a crab for us to eat tonight."

*Jayden perked up from the couch*

Jayden:"Seriously? I thought only mermaids made those."

Lily:"Mama said she could make it for us."

Camilla:"I can make it, but I can't make it like mermaids do."

Jayden:"I haven't had crab in forever, can you seriously make it?"

*Having the twins look up at her with sparkles in their eyes made Camilla smile*

Camilla:"Heh, of course I can. I'll get started on it right now."

*Camilla headed towards the kitchen, and prepared to cook*

Camilla(mind):It's been so long since I had crab too, I didn't know mermaids made them. Those two really have traveled a lot, huh...reminds me of someone me, Sam, and Keith met when we were adventurers.

*Camilla cooked crab, as Jayden and Lily waited at the table patiently*

Lily:"Do you remember the lasts time we had crab?"

Jayden:"Yeah! It was the first night that we slept at a mermaid-filled village. It was so hard to breathe there."

Camilla:"Damplantus has very damp air there, which makes it hard to breathe there unless you are a mermaid."

Lily:"Well, at least the food was good. They had a lot of fish and other sea stuff."

Camilla:"Have you been to the Elf villages yet?"

Jayden:"Yeah, they sucked."

Jayden(mind):The Elves figured out that me and Lily were demons, so they immediately threw us out.

Lily:"The elves were super mean to us when we visited."

Camilla:"Really? You two must've caused some major trouble then. Out of all the races, the elves have fought in the least amount of wars, and became a pacifist race a few years ago."

Lily:"Did we do something wrong?"

Camilla:"No, no. I'm sure you didn't. The elves must've misunderstood something."

Jayden:"That was one hell of a misunderstanding then."

Camilla:"Jayden, you need to stop saying 'hell' so casually."

Jayden:"Huh? Why?"

Camilla:"People can get offended by that word if you say it out loud. Try not to say it, ok?"

Jayden:"Ugh...fine."

Jayden(mind):Like hell I am!

*Camilla finished making dinner, and the three of them ate in the dining room*

Camilla:"So, how does it taste?"

Lily:"It doesn't like how the mermaids made it, but it's really good!"

Jayden:"That one way to put it."

Camilla:"And what do you think, Jayden?"

Jayden:"I dunno, it's food. I got my hopes up for nothing."

Camilla:"That's fine, you just preferred how the mermaids cooked it then."

Jayden:"I guess."

*An awkward silence formed as they continued eating*

Camilla(mind):Crap, I don't know what to say to make conversation with them anymore. What can I talk about?

Lily:"I think I like this version better than with the mermaids."

Camilla:"Oh yeah, that reminds. You two have traveled quite a ways to know what food mermaids eat."

Jayden:"Erg, that's just because we were...visiting. That's all-"

Lily:"We were going to look for a place to stay, but the big guys in front of every inn pushed us out. We've been traveling, looking for a place to stay ever since we couldn't find mommy."

Jayden:"Lily! What the hell are you saying to her?!"

Camilla(mind):They've been traveling ever since they lost their mother, looking for a home...that's so sad.

Camilla:"You two...have been alone this whole time? You must've been really brave to survive in this world with only each other."

Lily:"That's because Jayden protected me from every dangerous person that tried to hurt me."

Jayden:"I just...you always put yourself in danger, what was I supposed to do?"

Camilla(mind):I see now. No matter how Jayden acts, he wants his sister to be safe.

Camilla:"That's really nice of you, Jayden."

Jayden:"W-Whatever! I'm already done eating, so I'm going to my room!"

*Jayden's face blushed, then he stomped up to his room. Leaving Lily and Camilla to finish their dinner*

Camilla:"Aw, I wanted to tell him a story."

Lily:"A stowie? What's that?"

Camilla:"A story is something you tell someone about that you experienced. Like when you told me how Jayden would always protect you, that's a story."

Lily:"Oh...ok, I wanna hear it!"

*Lily's eyes sparkled at Camilla*

Camilla:"Hehe, alright then. Once upon a time, there were a small group of adventurers that traveled the world for quests to complete. In a town they visited, they met a girl there. She had beastly traits that no other beastman had, yet the adventurers were familiar with her unique features. They accepted her, and she found out that each of the adventurers had unique traits of their own. One was the strongest human she'd seen, another was able to cast deadly magical spells, but the last adventurer had the most unique trait among the group."

*Camilla paused, which made Lily want her  to continue*

Lily:"What was it? What did the adventurer have?"

Camilla:"He had an ability to speak with the dead. The unique beast took a liking to the last adventurer more than the other two. The adventurers said goodbye to the friendly beast girl, and continued their journey. As the beast girl took to the skies, and flew above the clouds. The end."

Lily:"Whoa! The beast girl could fly?!"

Camilla:"Indeed, she did. That was her unique trait that only she had."

Lily:"I'm gonna tell Jayden the story, he's gonna love it!"

Camilla:"Sure, go tell him the story."

*Lily went up to her room, giggling. Camilla was left to clean up the table alone*

Camilla(mind):She was a very interesting girl too. I wonder how she's doing right now...

*Meanwhile, back with Detective Keith. He's finished his day at work, and went to the guild to report*

Receptionist:"Oh, hey Detective."

Keith:"Nothing to report for today."

Receptionist:"Sounds good...have a good day then."

Keith:"Is something wrong? You don't sound as enthusiastic as you used to."

Receptionist:"Oh, well...you know, it's just that-"

Keith:"I'm sorry, it's my fault isn't it? It's about what I said last time, right?"

Receptionist:"...Yeah."

Keith:"I really am sorry about it, but I've loved someone for about 25 years, back when I was an adventurer. I've may have known her for only a week, but we shared a moment that I will never forget. I'm sorry. I know, it sounds really bad from your perspective."

Receptionist:"No, in fact I know exactly how you feel. However, I don't remember when I was an adventurer."

Keith:"I get that, time goes by so fast. "

Receptionist:"Yeah. Listen, Keith-I mean Detective...I'll try to act more normal from now on, so don't worry about me, ok?"

Keith:"Huh? Well, ok then. I hope to keep working with you then."

Receptionist:"You know it!"

*Keith left the guild, and returned home*

Keith(mind):It's been so long since I last saw her. Me, Camilla and Samuel were in the same party back then. I couldn't believe that she was the only girl in this world who had dragon features.

Keith:"Now she's probably exploring another part of the world from the skies."

*Keith fell asleep at his desk*

Narrator:Who is this dragon girl that keeps getting brought up in this chapter? I wonder if you'll find out in the next one!
