Scandalous
"Well... this is a compromising position," muttered Theodosia as she glanced around nervously for either of their fathers. The last thing they needed was to cause (however unintentional it may be) an argument in the middle of the ballroom. Not only would it be embarrassing, it could serve to cause more bad blood between the families.
Philip nodded in agreement. "I suppose it is..." He bowed politely. "It was an honor dancing with you, Miss Burr, but I'm afraid I must take my leave."
Theo gave him a small smile and curtsied back. "You as well, Mr. Hamilton." She bit her lip before adding hastily, "I hope to talk with you again." She cursed herself as soon as the words left her mouth.
To her surprise, Philip lightly kissed the back of her hand. "And I, you, Miss Burr." With one last smile in her direction, he left. Probably to go find his family.
Theo felt her face heat up once more as she watched him retreat. Her heart was still pounding in her chest as she breathed deeply multiple times to try and calm herself down. What was happening to her?
OoOoOo
Once Philip met up with his mother and sister, his father stormed towards them a few minutes later, a sour look on the older man's face. "What's wrong, Pops?" he asked as the family began to make their way towards their carriage.
"Burr," muttered Alexander in response, not bother to elaborate. Philip didn't ask more, guilt creeping in his stomach as he thought back to the very intelligent and extremely beautiful girl he had spent around an hour talking with.
Angie gave him a knowing look out of the corner of her eye before pulling him aside. "I saw you, Pip," she told him, wiggling her eyebrows. "Seems as if you fancy that Burr girl."
Philip groaned and dismissed her accusation with a wave of his hand. "Quiet, Angie," he silenced. "It was a simple dance." His sister simply smirked slyly and didn't speak anymore about it.
OoOoOo
"Did you enjoy yourself tonight, Theodosia?" Aaron Burr asked his daughter as they began to ride home in their own carriage. He hadn't been with her most of the night and was curious as to what she had been up to.
Theo nodded. "I did, Daddy," she answered honestly, though her mind was elsewhere. Namely, the very handsome boy she had been dancing with. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't get him out of her head.
It was wrong, she knew that. If her father found out she was harboring feelings for the son of Alexander Hamilton, he'd try to marry her off the the nearest, wealthiest man available. Of course, she always doubted she'd ever find true love, but she at least wanted a man she could tolerate.
Theo knew she had to find away to push these feelings away. However, based on the way she reacted every time she merely thought his name, she doubted they would subside anytime soon.
OoOoOo
When Philip and his family returned home, he immediately retreated to his room and took out a quill and a piece of parchment. He simply couldn't get the girl out of his head. Usually, girls tried to flirt with him as soon as they met. But Theodosia... she was the only girl he ever met that could match him.
In a way, she reminded him of his Aunt Angelica. Strong-willed, witty, not to mention, she had quite a way with words. Even if what she said would be considered absolutely in this time, the persuasion dripping from her lips could stop you and make you think.
Making up his mind, Philip began to write.
Dear Miss Burr,
I very much enjoyed our time spent together this evening. Your unwavering wit was unmatched by anyone (man or woman) in the ballroom. Your opinion on politics interests me and I hope to hear more from you soon.
Our association with each other might be considered scandalous by the public considering the rivalry between our fathers, but I find myself not caring very much. If you should choose not to allow yourself in my presence, that's alright. But I must admit, I hope that isn't the case.
Kindest regards,
Philip Hamilton
OoOoOo
"Miss Theo?"
Theodosia looked up from her literature work to meet the eyes of her maid. "Yes, Johanna?" she responded softly. Johanna was an old woman who had been working for the Burrs since before she was born. She was practically her second mother.
Johanna handed her an envelope. "This arrived for you, Miss," she told the girl.
Theo took the letter. "Thank you, Johanna." The maid nodded to her and left in silence as she opened the letter. She let her eyes scan its contents before that strange fluttering returned to her chest. It was from Philip.
She felt her cheeks heat up once more. He had actually written her. Even though he said he'd like to talk to her at the ball, she hadn't entirely believed him. She squealed (much to her embarrassment) like a foolish little girl before rushing to her desk to write him back.
Dear Mr. Hamilton,
I was simply ecstatic when I had seen that your letter arrived. I must admit, I did not think you would write me so soon. I also enjoyed our time together this evening and I do hope we get a chance to converse again.
I recall that earlier you mentioned you were a poet? That's simply fantastic. My mother was very fond of poetry in her life and I'm interested to see what you have written. As for out fathers, I do believe that what they don't know shall not hurt them. I would welcome your friendship and hope you accept mine.
Sincerely,
Theodosia Burr
Theo sighed in bliss as she sealed the letter. Perhaps she was being too forward in asking for friendship, but she simply could not help herself. Philip Hamilton was unlike any man her age she'd ever met and she very much enjoyed his company.
Maybe, just maybe, their fathers' rivalry wouldn't be an issue. Though, as this thought came to mind, Theo let out a chuckle.
Yeah, right. This was the definition of scandalous.
