8. Mysterious birthmark

“A lot of people will look at you
But only a few will see you”

Perth, Pond, Java, Joong, Aungpao, Gemini, and Prim gathered in "Forbidden Room 609", a place where the teachers and other Knights of Light believed no one should be.

Room 609 looked completely normal, maybe there was just too much pink in it.  The walls were pink, the neon signs were pink, one of which was in English and read: "Have a nice day". Even the empty flower pots on the window sill were pink. There was one, large, double bed, a big wardrobe for clothes and  a shelf with books, and part of the room was divided into a kitchen and it even had a bathroom.

A group of students from the Knights of Light Academy gathered in the sleeping area.  Gemini sat on the floor, poring over the class notes Dunk had provided him with.  Reading the same sentence over and over again and not understanding its meaning, he caught a fragment of the others' conversation.

“I'm telling you, I don't know anything about it.  It's some kind of fairy tale.  I don't believe it, you made it up just now”. Joong was arguing about something probably insignificant with Perth.

“You heard about it too! It will happen, I'm sure about it, you heard it too!” Perth stood his ground.

“When?”

“In class with Professor Tay!”

“Don't shout, someone will hear us”.  Gemini hissed, putting his index finger to his own mouth and ordering everyone to be quiet.

Every single person here knew that beyond a shadow of a doubt they shouldn't be here.  This was forbidden territory, there were legends about this place, but Gemini was completely unaware of them.  Norawit was never interested in superstitions, urban legends or ghost stories, which he put aside as fairy tales.  He believed in demons and poltergeists tho.

A pesky mosquito bit him on the cheek.  Gemini slapped his hand against the skin there.  Prim, sitting directly across from him, looked at him with her head tilted at an angle, and then he noticed an almost invisible, slightly brownish mark just below her ear.  Prim caught his gaze and immediately sat up straight, covering the mark with her hair as if she were ashamed of it.  Gemini frowned.  He was sure he had seen a similar mark somewhere before, but he couldn't remember where, and the one on Prim's neck was very faint and Norawit quickly realized that the girl was obviously trying to cover it up with makeup.

Clever.

Gemini decided he had to find a way to get a better look at this sign.  He was so deep in thought that he didn't notice when Perth stood behind him.  Perth hit Gem as hard as he could with a stack of blank sheets of paper on the back of his head.

“Ouch!  Are you crazy?!”

“Quiet!  Because someone may hear us!”    Perth thought it was funny to parody Gem from a while ago.

“Shut up.  You know what a serious task this is, don't make fun of it.  If this is fun for you, you can leave now, but there will be no coming back”.  Gemini didn't even realize that he now sounded like Professor Earth, one of the only two professors he had any respect for.

“Okay, tell me, what are you talking about?”

“Tell you, what are we talking about?  We talked about this legend, according to which a king was to appear whose reign would last only 33 days.  Everything indicates that it will be you, Master Gemini”. Pond said.

Gemini sensed that Pond, standing next to Perth, was mocking him.

Pond always played the cool guy who didn't care about anything and who was allowed to do anything because of his origins.  He and Joong Archen were best friends almost from cradle, as their mothers were neighbors and friends who raised their sons together.  When one of the mothers couldn't take care of her son, she left him under the care of the other mother and she could always take care of her own affairs.

Gemini never told anyone about it, he didn't want to admit it even to himself, but he envied both of them such mothers and the relationship between them.  Both women always spoiled their sons.  The boys always wore expensive, branded clothes and shoes, they were always the first to have access to the latest computer or Play Station games, they arrived at the Institute in expensive sports cars and they always looked down on everyone.  Gemini made friends with them mainly because it was safe, but he also learned from them how to proudly hold his head high, how to defeat his enemies and how to destroy the dreams of the weaker.  This arrangement suited him.

Until some time.

Until it turned out that Perth also wanted to run for king.  Their relationship has visibly cooled down since then, but they still haven't stopped spending time together.  Mainly out of habit, because their favorite meeting place was room 609, and unfortunately, Gem hid there when he wanted to escape from his brother.

“How do you think you will die?  Shot by his brother?  Poisoned by his wife, Prim?  Because you don't have a mother so she can suffocate you with a pillow in your sleep”.

Pond looked at Gem with dislike.  Besides Fourth, Pond was another Knight of Light candidate that Gem had trouble with.  And that's a big problem, because Pond was one of the most important people here.

“If you have something against me, tell me openly to my face, and don't beat around the bush”.

“I have nothing against you, I don't dare to oppose the future king”. Pond replied with a mocking smile and checked the reactions of his friends.  Joong smiled crookedly, Aungpao applauded him quietly, and Java preferred to look at his black painted nails rather than engage in unnecessary discussion.

“Do you really believe he will become king?  I think I have a better chance”. Fourth appeared next to them out of nowhere.

Aungpao rubbed his eyes with his hands, not believing what he was seeing.

“Fourth?  Where did you come from?” He asked.

“Where did I come from?  I don't know, maybe some rainbow unicorn brought me here, whispering in my ear that you were tormenting my rival”.

Fourth wasn't going to reveal his source of information.  He understood too well the danger of sharing knowledge with someone else.

“Stay out of this, nong Fourth.  He's your enemy, isn't he?  Let us have some fun with him.  See, there are no supporters of him here, because he certainly has no friends.  Nobody will defend him.  You know?  We taught him everything.  Without us, he would be a total zero”.

These words sounded strangely familiar to Fourth.

Gem's blood was boiling with anger in his veins, which he had difficulty controlling.  However, he remembered the warning from P'Earth and P'Namtan and decided not to pick a fight with anyone, even if they deserved to be punched in the face.  Prim clung to his arm like a lifeline.  She was afraid of them too.  He put his arm around her, wanting to give her his support and say: "I'm here with you, don't worry, I'll protect you." An unpleasant twitch ran across Fourth's face, and he felt a painful twinge in his heart.

"Prim has a boyfriend in the non-magical world," He remembered his friends' words, but as he looked at Gem with Prim, he somehow found it hard to believe that the two of them had no warmer feelings for each other beyond friendship.

“Even if he is my enemy, I can beat him honestly, I don't need such dirty tricks".

Gemini wasn't the only one who was seriously shocked when he heard this.

“Someone must have replaced our Fourth.  Be careful, it could be a demon or maybe Fourth switched brains with Prim and now he thinks he is her!”.  Perth said in a loud whisper, looking significantly at the newcomer and then laughed as if his joke was the funniest thing they could ever hear.

The Fourth Nattawat everyone knew was a quiet, calm, polite boy who never got in anyone's way.  Meanwhile, in front of them stood an almost adult man, strong, brave, masculine, looking at them with deep disgust, as if they were some piece of dog shit that had accidentally stuck to the sole of his shoe.  They didn't know where, how or when such a powerful change had taken place in him, but they didn't feel like arguing with him at the moment.

“Of course, Master Nattawat, you are the king. We' re sorry”. Pond pretended to back away politely, but as soon as Fourth turned his back on him, he gave him the middle finger and whispered to his friends, “They'll remember me”.

“Gem, are you okay?” Fourth asked, momentarily forgetting that they were supposed to hate each other.

“Yes, yes, it's nothing.  Just stupid jokes.  They made fun of me and said I would become king, but I would only rule for 33 days.  They probably assume someone will kill me”.

Gem felt a pleasant warmth spread through his body as Fourth asked him about it.  Usually, no one but Dunk cared about what happened to him.  Even Phuwin, when he asked about his well-being, tended to do so only because his good upbringing dictated it.  That anyone could actually genuinely worry about him seemed unreal and bizarre to the point of being inappropriate.  It was a pleasant feeling, and yet Gemini quickly returned to his former self, devoid of any sensitivity.  He was pushing Fourth away again with his icy stare.

“That sounds like a threat.  I think we should tell the boss about this”.

“No, come on, it's nothing, I already told you.  Don't be pushy, I don't want anyone's pity, and I can deal with these zeros myself”.

“You don't hate each other?  And can you even talk nicely to each other?”  Prim put in her two cents.

Gem smiled tenderly at her, causing another painful pang in Fourth's heart, who decided that maybe hating Gem would be easier than trying to love this cold bastard and playboy.  He didn't want to risk himself being heartbroken, and looking at these two, he knew that was exactly what he should expect. But he already had promised something to... And he couldn't break this promise.

“Prim, my friend, you know me, I can also be nice if I want to”.

“Yes, if you want.  And it seems to me that you also want to be nice to Fourth, but you pretend that you're not. You are very strange wizard, khun Gemini”.

“Have you completely lost your mind?!  I don't want to be nice to him!  He's a weakling.  Why should I be nice to him?  He's my rival. Besides I think I should be nice only to a pretty girls and tell me, does he look like a girl?”.

“Maybe a little bit? He behaves like a girl sometimes” Gemini didn't expect this answer from Prim. “Oh Geeeeeem! I was just joking! Of course he's a boy! But he is very pretty boy!”

“It's nice that you're discussing me when I'm literally two steps away from you,” Fourth said sarcastically. He didn't know what he feels about what Prim had said. It seemed nice, but he felt that he couldn't trust her at all.

“Oh my, I completely forgot that you were real!” Gemini replied maliciously, then placed his spread hands under his chin as a sign of being cute and fluttered his eyelashes, which Fourth had noticed for the first time so close.  It had always seemed to him that Norawit's eyes were completely devoid of eyelashes, but when Gem leaned slightly in front of him and brought his face close to Nattawat's, Fourth saw that Gem had eyelashes and quite nice ones, long, black, surrounding exceptionally beautiful, dark eyes in which you could literally drown.  Additionally, Gem used black eyeliner to emphasize the contours of these incredibly beautiful eyes.

Fourth forgot to breathe for a moment.

He could only stand there, staring shamelessly into Gem's eyes, in his mind seeing Gem applying eyeliner with great skill in the mirror.  Even though they had been living together for a few days, Fourth had never had the opportunity to witness Gem's morning routine before, as he spent most of his time trying to escape from their shared apartment before his enemy pulled off some dirty trick.  It was enough that Gem, probably with someone's help, replaced the red typical of Scuderia Ferrari with navy blue in all his posters, as well as in his F1 car figurines.

Everyone who knew Formula 1, was aware how important was red color to Ferrari.

Fourth got all his courage and took a soft breath and tried to get out of this weird situation.

Prim, taught by Phuwin and Dunk, took her phone out of her purse and recorded the entire incident, sending it immediately to the group chat.  Phuwin and Dunk kept Gemini busy for the rest of the evening, running around him in the empty training room and singing a song about Gemini falling in love with Fourth.  Gemini, already undermined by the situation with Perth and the others, couldn't control his magic and accidentally injured Dunk, cutting the skin on his forearm with a spell he invented.

Dunk crouched on the floor with a loud groan and grabbed the bleeding spot.  Phuwin immediately took off his own shirt without a second thought, tore off a large piece and used it to stop the flow of blood.  After this event, Phuwin took Dunk to Dr. WanDee, who was on duty that day, loudly stating that he was "mortally offended at Gem and Gem is not to speak to him under any circumstances."

Gemini had a lot to think about that night, but what bothered him the most was the memory of Fourth's face so close to his that he could clearly see every freckle, his eyes, his slightly open mouth, his slightly reddened cheeks, the fringe of black, straight hair covering his forehead,  on which a single pimple could be seen, an ominous symbol of puberty.  There was something mysterious, enigmatic in Nattawat's dark, almost black eyes, something that seemed to be calling Gemini from a distance, calling to himself.

In addition, there was this birthmark on Prim that she tried so hard to hide... What could it mean and why did he have the impression that Prim was ashamed of him?

As he was brushing his teeth in the bathroom, wearing only a black T-shirt with wide straps and boxers as black as his soul, his eyes fell on his own bare arm and that's when he noticed it.  Same birthmark.  With the toothbrush still in his mouth, he touched the spot with his hand.

Is it possible?

Why did he and Prim have the same birthmarks?

His was darker, more distinct, shaped like half a heart on one side and half a crown on the other.  He had the impression that Prim's birthmark looked a bit more like a star than a crown, but it was still quite similar.

Speechless, he put the toothbrush haphazardly on the sink, staring at his own reflection as if he had seen a ghost.

“Okay, but it wasn't on me that I saw this birthmark... Not only me and Prim have it, there is someone else, but who?”

Gemini strained his memory in vain, this symbol was not associated with any familiar face.  He finally gave up.  However, he understood that this symbol must mean something and connect them somehow, but how?

He couldn't figure this out.
