46. Interrogation

Perth spoke to Fourth in his usual arrogant and superior tone.

“Do you think they’ll elect you king? It’s funny, you know? Maybe they’ll even vote for you, and you know why?”

Fourth didn’t know, and didn’t really want to know, what someone as perfidious and conceited as Perth Tanapon thought about all this. Tanapon wasn’t put off by this. He continued his hateful and contemptuous speech, sitting on the other side of a grey table that was attached to the floor by a spell. He had handcuffs on his wrists, and his eyes were flashing menacingly. Despite this, Nattawat didn’t seem to care. He seemed rather bored. At one point, he began examining his own fingernails, as if wondering if it wasn’t time for another dose of perfectly tailored care.

“They’ll elect you because you’re weak, because you can be manipulated.  They will choose you, but if you think they will respect you, you are sorely mistaken. They will choose you, but only for themselves. They will do it because they can use you.”

Perth almost hissed as he leaned over the table. Gemini, who was standing on the other side of the one-way mirror with Joong and Pahn, clenched his fist and gritted his teeth. He was about to enter the interrogation room when Pahn gently but firmly grabbed his arm.

“No need, Fourth is doing great,” She comforted him. Gemini looked at her.

Pahn had joined them very late, along with her twin brother, Poon. And she was closer to Fourth than Gemini, but he was still grateful for what she had done for them. He learned that she was the one who bandaged Chokun and the others’ wounds when they got into fights.  And it was she who often comforted Fourth when he was at the end of his rope. It was she who, at Fourth's request, visited Tu Tontawan when Nattawat was worried about her. She didn't have the best grades among the candidates for the Knights of Light, but she stood out for her kind heart, caring and slight shyness in contacts with one boy in particular.

Gemini nodded briefly and went back to watching Fourth, who was still listening to Perth's curses with an expression of complete boredom on his face. Gemini involuntarily laughed briefly.

“Genius. I'd already forgotten how tough guy Fourth is. Oh, it's all because of this pregnancy,” Gemini stated somewhat melancholy.

“And isn't it by any chance that you trained him like that? You used to attack him like that too. What, you don't remember?” Joong playfully punched him in the arm.

“What? Me? I always loved him, I would never…”

“Yeah... Sure, keep telling yourself that,” Pahn winked at him. “Even I remember you being mean to him, don’t try to charm us here now.”

Gemini rolled his eyes. There was no point in arguing with these stubborn pair. He preferred to look at Fourth and Perth.

“Of course they’ll choose me for that. You become a king for your subjects, not for your own gain. And I’m not naive, I don’t expect them to love me and carry me in their arms. I’m too young, it’s understandable that they won’t trust me at first, it's up to me to prove that I deserve respect. And what do you think a king is for, Perth?”

It was a trick question, and Nattawat asked it with stoic calm, looking at Perth with such a benevolent gaze that the accused shrank back in his chair.  He wanted to shield his face with his hands from the gaze that seemed to be scanning him like X-rays. He turned sideways to his interlocutor.

In the corridor, next to Gem, Pahn and Joong appeared Earth and Professor Zee Pruk, a secret agent of His Majesty, appointed before the previous king died.

Zee was dressed this time in the uniform of a regular bodyguard from the No-Magic world, everything black, including sunglasses, although these had gold frames. In one ear he had an earpiece that seemed almost transparent. On his neck you could see a tattoo of a red dragon.

“Your boy will be a good ruler, he helped us a lot,” Professor Zee addressed Gemini with respect, bowing low. “Welcome, nong Gemini”.

“Hello professor… err… I mean… Oh, I don’t know how to address you…” Gemini was slightly irritated that he didn’t know how to address the man who had been their teacher for a long time, who had tortured them with dance lessons, and who had turned out to be the most loyal servant of the previous king.

“It doesn’t matter, nong Gemini, you will probably soon become the king’s husband, I think it is rather me who should ask for your grace and permission to remain as His Majesty’s secret agent.”

Professor Zee spoke so solemnly that Gemini felt even more embarrassed. Fortunately, Joong happily took over his role.

“Esteemed professor, I think that will be no problem. I also think that Gemini will not want you to treat him with any special considerations, right, nong Gemini?”

Joong addressed Gem in such a tone that he felt it as pressure that allowed him to do nothing but politely agree. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Pahn giggling quietly in the corner, covering her mouth with her hand. In his mind, he shook his finger at her and ordered her to copy the sentence two hundred times: «I will not laugh at the king», although he was sure that this feisty girl would add «(...) in his presence», for no reason, just for fun.

Perth's interrogation had been going on for over twenty minutes now, and so far it had yielded no results. Perth, despite being caught red-handed and trying to murder Fourth Nattawat, was not confessing to anything. He stubbornly maintained that it wasn't him, that they had definitely seen someone else, and that he wasn't there. When Tanapon noticed that Fourth didn't seem to be listening, he began to verbally attack.

Fourth Nattawat was very brave and strong, but Gemini saw a muscle twitch in his face when Perth threatened Gemini, Tu, and the baby.

“Phhhh, you're pathetic Nattawat. You won't have time to be king anyway. What's the point? You're pregnant, you'd be better off taking care of your little brat. Do you think your Gemini would want to change diapers and listen to that kid's constant yapping?  Ha ha ha, if you believe he'll help you, then you don't know him at all. He'll leave you at the first opportunity. Unless he throws a tantrum and accidentally kills you and the kid. What? You didn't know that? You didn't hear about his past? Somehow it doesn't surprise me at all, of course he didn't want to brag to you. If you want your kid to survive and not have at least a broken spine, then you better keep him away from Norawit”.

These words, although Fourth knew they were just an empty and meaningless threat unsupported by any evidence, worried Fourth. And Perth felt like a winner. He hit the nail on the head. He forced Fourth to think about what he would choose if he had to choose.

However, Fourth wasn't fooled for long. He stood up slowly, walked to the front door, and finally turned around and replied cheerfully with a completely triumphant smile.

“No, Perth, you don’t know him. Do you think I don’t know about his past? Let me tell you something: Gem wasn’t like you, he told me everything. You see, my dear, there’s something between us that you probably can’t understand, and do you know what it’s called?”

Perth glared at him. This wasn’t how he had imagined it. He had thought he could intimidate Nattawat, but Fourth was the one on top.

“It’s trust, my dear, trust. Something that’s backfiring on you, because you trusted the wrong people. Your people are giving their statements in the next room now. Who do you think they’ll point to as the leader and main culprit?”

Fourth didn’t need to hear the answer. He left, passing Professor Zee in the passageway.

“Excellent work, nong Fourth, now it’s my turn,” Professor Zee praised Nattawat, shaking his hand. “You boys can go home. And… and you, Pahn.  Go back to your place and get some rest. You did your job perfectly.”

Gemini and Fourth greeted this statement with great pleasure and relief. Fourth's back ached and his legs were a bit swollen, all he wanted was a warm bath and then a comfortable bed.

“Gem, what do you think we put on a movie or a series from the No-Magicals world and ask a house elf to make us some food?” Fourth asked, throwing his arms around Gem's neck and staring at him as if he were the most beautiful wonder of the universe.

“Great idea, let's go,” Gemini gently but lovingly brushed Fourth's bangs away from his forehead and kissed him there. “You did really well and I assure you I'm not as rude or irresponsible as Perth thinks I am. I promise you I'll always help you with the baby. Besides, it's OUR baby, part of both of us, it would be weird if I didn't take care of you, right?”

“Bleeee, I'm going to puke,” Joong pretended to throw up on the floor in front of him. Fourth gave him the traditional middle finger.

“You should point that finger at your future husband,” Joong laughed, grabbed Fourth's hand and directed it towards Gemini. Pahn slapped his arm so hard that it hurt him a lot.  Pahn and Joong said goodbye to them only at the door of their apartment, knowing that they no longer had to worry about what other problems Perth's gang and the Squirrel Gang would cause them. Those people were currently being transported to the dungeons, where they were to await their trials.

Gemini helped Fourth bathe, but he tried to avoid looking at him as much as possible. Something in Nattawat's body made it hard for him to hold back his own dirty thoughts, and at the same time he didn't want to hurt Fourth or the child.

After the bath, they lay down together on the bed and Fourth chose a comedy to watch. Gemini held him close, unconsciously playing with his hair. He had no thoughts, he just lived in the moment, and this moment was special. His soul was filled with a warmth he had never experienced before. He felt free and safe. He felt that this was a homecoming.

Involuntarily, a single tear of emotion flowed from his eye. Gemini wasn't watching a movie, he was gazing lovingly at his beloved. The fear of losing him was still wandering in the back of his mind, but recent events had taught him to enjoy the moments they had spent together even more. Now, he treated every second they spent together as the most wonderful gift from fate.

Fourth laughed loudly, and Gemini once again thought with emotion:

«Oh great wizard, how I love that voice! And that laughter! It's the most beautiful sound in the world. Oh great angels, I ask you for only one thing, don't separate us ever again. Isn't love something good? Why are we punished for a feeling so beautiful and harmless to anyone, while those who spread false gossip, throw cruel accusations and hatred at others are rewarded? This has to change, we have to change it.  If they really do choose one of us, we must make sure that our world is finally fully governed by justice, kindness, and love. Let's not let anyone else go through what we've gone through. Let no one else know our fear, anxiety, and worry. No one needs to know how much it hurts to lose someone you love or not have the right to love someone you love. We need to be good rulers. Fourth is right, we can't become kings for ourselves. You become leaders for your subjects, not for yourself. Oh great wizard, how much I love this sweet boy!»

Gemini leaned down and kissed the top of the head of the unsuspecting Nattawat, who looked at him questioningly.

“Nothing, I just remembered how much I love you. I don't think I've told you yet. So much has happened lately that I haven't had the chance. Don't look at me like that, I'm not kidding. I really do love you”.

Gemini couldn't have predicted that his sweet and full of deep and sincere feelings statement would cause floods of tears from Fourth, who was overly sensitive due to pregnancy. Nattawat hugged Norawit to himself, sobbing loudly.

“Hey, FotFot, why are you crying? Don't cry, I didn't mean to make you sad, I'm sorry. If it bothers you, I won't say it again”.

“Make me sad?! Gem, you didn't make me sad. I... I'm crying with happiness! Yes, yes, these are tears of happiness, you little fool!”

Gemini thought it sounded quite strange when a boy shorter than him called him little. As for being a fool, he somewhat agreed with it, but only a little.
