32. Betrayed

“Boss, we found this at Gemini's”

P'First didn't intend to keep this news to himself. As soon as he said goodbye to the boys, he immediately went to visit their division leader, P'Off. Fortunately, the boss was in his office. First greeted them politely and sat down on the chair in front of his desk. P'Off listened attentively to his story about the items discovered in Norawit's room.

“And you're sure this doesn't belong to your cousin?”

“Yes, boss, there's no way Nong Fourth would keep something like this in their shared room. I think there's more to it”.

“It's good that you came to me with this. Send me those photos. I'll have a task for you: you have to take Gemini and Fourth out for a walk so my men have time to thoroughly search their room”.

“Is that necessary?” First was concerned. The plan seemed simple, but it also required him to “trick” his cousin, to whom he couldn’t reveal that he had given the information to the boss.

“Unfortunately, yes. You did well, nong First. Well, you should go now.  Let me know when you take the boys for a walk, I have to inform my people”.

First bowed low and left the boss's office. In the hallway, he met Mixxiw, Khaotung's older brother by a year. He exchanged a few words with him about the next day's schedule of activities with animals and came up with the idea of taking Gemini and Fourth to the gardens. According to information from Dr. Jimmy and Dr. WanDee, Fourth's pregnancy was not high-risk, which meant he could take a little risk and do some easy tasks, even take on some challenges.

First didn't reveal to anyone else what he suspected, even in the presence of his cousin he pretended to believe Norawit.

The next day, he took the boys to the gardens, where the magical animals were already waiting for them. Gem's pegasus, Hope, as usual, ran up to him, demanding snacks and petting. The other students of the Knights Academy gathered in the gardens.  Lights. The weather was beautiful, a gentle breeze rustled the leaves, and the sun twinkled merrily in the grass.

Gemini tried to lead Fourth by putting his arm around his waist, but Nattawat pushed him away so hard that Gem staggered and fell into a nearby tree.

“What's wrong with you today, Nattawat?!” He hissed, annoyed.

“I'm fine. You don't have to hang around me like that. I don't like it. Besides, I don't want others to know. P'First said that only a few people know about... well, me, I'd rather keep it that way”.

Gemini shrugged, but he felt offended. He didn't like anyone to contradict him. And personally, he thought that who knew about it no longer mattered. What's more, he was sure that it had been rumored from the very beginning.  He expected hostile or judgmental glances, accusatory whispers, but none of that happened. Each student was absorbed in his own work, and only Phuwin and Prim paid any attention to them.

Phuwin gave them a warm smile, and Prim waved her hand in greeting.

It seemed that everything was fine.

Meanwhile, at the request of the head of the Knights of Light branch in Thailand, three of the boss's most trusted people entered the apartment shared by Gem and Fourth: Professor Earth Pirapat, P'Milk, and Gun Atthaphan.

Gun, as a vampire, immediately sensed that the specific smell of blood was coming not only from the cardboard box in which Gemini kept those strange objects reminiscent of devil worship, but also from under the bed. Gun looked there and after a short while he pulled out a slightly dusty, old journal covered in piece of white cloth full of red and brown stains. It was obvious that the notebook was very old, the pages were yellowed, and the ink was brown instead of black or blue. There were also sketches in the notebook. Gun noticed the date in the corner of one of the pages: 1886.

He sat down on the bed and immersed himself in reading.

Tuesday is my favorite day, I can always meet my Susanne then. Susie is such a good woman, delicate and sweet, loving nature. I don't know how someone with such a wonderful heart as hers could marry such a monster as Raphael. I once asked her about it, she brushed me off, saying she loved him.

I asked her about it. She told me that Raphael used to be different, warm, sensitive, kind, but apparently something happened and since then he changed, became bitter, started hating people poorer than himself, punished for the smallest mistake as if it was a great crime, sending many innocent people to dungeons and condemning them to torture.

Raphael is handsome, it's no wonder women go crazy about him. He's also rich. I think Susie didn't love him at all, her family forced her to marry him.

There were various rumors about Raphael.  It was said that he had been seen more than once with a young, beautiful, sweet boy, cuddling up to each other, but who would believe that? Especially considering the fact that Raphael and Susie had three children.

I saw little Evie yesterday. She has my eyes, she seems fragile and delicate. When Susie handed her to me to hold, I was afraid I would hurt her. I don't tell anyone this, but I believe she is my daughter.

Gun flipped through a few pages. This time the pages were stained with something, and from the content Gun guessed they must have been tears.

My little Evie left us last night. My wonderful daughter! May God watch over her! What did this little baby do to the world that she had to leave so soon? My dearest little thing! My greatest treasure!

I can't watch Susanne mourn. Susie seems absent. I saw how Raphael forced her to eat, how he hit her in the face when she wouldn't drink. He doesn't understand her pain, he's cruel. I wish with all my heart that one day he himself would feel the same pain, that the same despair would tear his heart apart. May the gods send him all the suffering he himself caused! I curse you, Raphael!

I went to Susie in the evening. She was alone. Her maid was trying to persuade her to take a warm bath. Susie was lying in bed, her complexion completely gray, her eyes swollen with tears.

The servants whispered among themselves that Raphael had found out about his wife's betrayal and had strangled little Evie as punishment. I know he's a monster, but I find it hard to believe that he was such a monster. After all, she was just a tiny, innocent child. Susie claims that the little one had been sick for over a week. I regret that I wasn't here. I had gone all the way to Prague to take care of a few things. A new, better job was waiting for me. I believed that in a year or two I would be able to take Susanne and the children to live with me. Especially since I had met Raphael in the city in the company of a young, promising gardener with great musical talent. They say his name is Robert, but he introduced himself to me as Paul. I don't know what to think about it. For a long time I didn't want to believe the accusations of the crowd that Raphael was sick.

I fell asleep next to Susie. Raphael didn't come back to the villa that night. He was probably wandering around the city and drinking. None of my business.  The most important thing is that Susie wasn't alone that night.

I'm scared. I don't know what the future holds for us. Raphael seems to be losing his common sense and senses more and more. I'm thinking about persuading Susie to pack the most important things, take the children and escape with me to Prague. But I'm afraid I won't make it in time.

If anyone finds this journal, please find my Susie, if she's not with me. If I can't do it myself, give her this journal and a bouquet of red roses. There must be seven of them. Choose the prettiest ones. Tell her they're from Thomas. Susie will know, she'll understand.

To Gun's amazement, the entries ended there, and the last few pages were stained with some brown substance that the capable vampire recognized as blood.

Gun immediately realized how important evidence he held in his hands, which were covered in white latex gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints. He wrapped the journal in a plastic bag and continued searching the room.

P'Milk hacked into Gemini's account on the laptop he was using. It wasn't hard.  Norawit was so in love with himself that he used the phrase "hotgemini01" as a password. P'Milk didn't bother browsing through the files and folders on the spot, instead copying the entire memory of the computer to a portable hard drive, and as a joke in one of the long-abandoned presentations, she left him a hidden message. She was sure Norawit wouldn't even notice.

Professor Earth used the stele and magical runes to check all the books and mascots until one of them glowed purple. P'Earth put the stele on the nearby cabinet, grabbed a rainbow stuffed toy in the shape of a beaver, and examined it carefully from every side. The stuffed beaver had a zipper sewn into its back. P'Earth opened the zipper and saw small, brown packages. He took one out and cut it open with a penknife taken from an aluminum suitcase. It turned out that the packages were filled with something that looked like  drugs.

The professor, like Gun, had packed the bear in its entirety into a clear plastic bag.

“I don't like that, professor, I feel something fishy here”, P'Milk confessed, waiting for all the files to be copied onto the portable hard drive.

“You're right, nong Milk. I think we're thinking the same thing. If my suspicions are correct, we have a traitor among ourselves. But I hope I'm wrong, nothing is sure until proven”.

“Do you think it really belongs to him, or did someone plant it?”

“I don't know, we can't rule out any possibility at this point. Let's not let ourselves be misled. We'll take the evidence to our lab and examine it thoroughly there. Only then will we be able to draw any conclusions”.

“Yes, that's true, that's true. But what if it turns out it really belongs to Gemini?”

“Well, I think our Supreme Court will start proceedings in this case.  If we can prove that nong Fourth knew nothing about it, we will save him and the child, but nong Gemini will probably be punished”.

“So this child could lose one of its parents?”

“I can't rule that out.  It all depends on what the evidence tells us”.

Sure, the evidence. So far, it didn't tell them much. The drugs could have been placed there by someone who helped Norawit decorate the room before Nattawat's return. The objects of Satanism found in the closet could have been hidden there by Norawit for any possible purpose. The old journal didn't really prove anything either, except that one of the boys had stumbled upon a long-ago betrayal. But how did this journal, written in English, end up in Thailand, in the apartment of a candidate for the Knight of Light?

Once they had searched the entire room, they called in the house elves to clean up the mess that had reigned there. Three of the boss's most trusted people went together to the laboratory hidden in the basement to subject the evidence they found to detailed tests. After all, there was a possibility that someone wanted to exclude them from the fight for the royal crown and therefore planted something that could have had nothing to do with them.

Meanwhile, P'First, on his boss' orders, gently questioned not only Gem and Fourth, but also Prim, Pahn, Phuwin, Dunk, and even Chokun.

Chokun was the least talkative of the entire crew. He answered with half-words, short grunts, or nods. P'First didn't learn much from him, and he was sorely disappointed. Gemini was clearly pissed off and First abandoned plan to talk to him for now. He believed that nong Gemini won't say anything new anyways.

To his surprise at the end of classes Perth walked towards him.

“P'First, I think I know something that can help your cousin. Can we talk somewhere in private?”

First looked around, but other students already walked out of the gardens to go and find something to eat for the break and get ready for another lessons.

“Yeah, no problem, I think we can talk safely here. What's going on?”

“It's long story. Buy me a soda and something to eat and I'll tell you”.

P'First looked at Perth with suspicion but didn't say anything. He was curious what this young boy was about to tell him. It had to be something really important if Perth had waited for everyone to leave. For sure he wanted to keep it secret.

“You want to help nong Fourth? But aren't you two rivals?”

“Rivals doesn't always mean enemies”, Perth smiled and took out of the backpack pacage of cigaretes. He put one into his mouth burned it. First was never fan of smoking but again he didn't say a word. Perth's behavior seemed very weird and out of the place. Something was up and First needed to know what was going on.
