3. Fourth is back
“I hate being ignored. I look like an idiot trying to get your attention”.
Gemini was so bored with Professor Tay Tawan's classes that he started signing the desk with his name. His thoughts wandered somewhere far away. He was just wondering how to make life miserable for Fourth, who was about to return from training camp, when someone approached him.
Tay leaned over him, pushed his notebook aside and looked at the writing with disapproval.
“Gemini, didn't I tell you that you shouldn't write on school desks?” Professor Tay as always sounded like an annoyed bee.
“After all, it's my desk, I always sit there, so what does it matter? If professor insists, I can buy that desk and it won't be a problem, right?”
“Are you talking back to the teacher?” Of course the teacher wasn't happy with his student's answer. He knew he might lose all respect among students if he let that spoiled brat act like this and take control over him, but the truth was Tay Tawan had no idea how to deal with stubborn boy. He wondered how could it happen that this young man got to become a candidate for a future king. Tawan saw nothing royal in him.
“No, professor, I'm sorry, I just...” To Tawan's surprise Gemini stepped back and sounded even quite polite. Professor tried to keep calm and not show any emotions.
“You just what? Would you like to take a walk to see our boss?”
“No probably not? Can I not go?” Gemini asked more than stated. Basically, everything seemed more interesting to him than sitting through boring classes, which he hated as much as that damn Nattawat. He wouldn't mind a short walk to the Institute's director's office. At least he wouldn't have to be here. At professor Earth's classes he could at least take a short nap, but here it was impossible, Tawan always watched every student very carefuly and was strict.
“So why don't you erase that and start focusing on what I'm trying to teach you? This is important. Or maybe you think you know everything and you don't need to learn anymore?”
“Okay, professor, I'll focus more,” Gemini agreed, and as Tay left his table to approach Java, who had asked to explain to him some aspect of today's class that he didn't understand, Gemini quietly muttered under his breath, "Then why don't you start focus on studying?", imitating his teacher. Phuwin laughed quietly, which earned him a slap on the shoulder with the notebook.

A few hours later...
“So, your roommate is coming back today, how do you feel about it?” Gemini was sure this question was asked just to annoy him even more. As if today wasn't hard enough to him!
“I don't feel comfortable with it at all. I didn't think about it until you ruined it all by mentioning him. And I was already in such a good mood!”.
“Oh come on, it can't be that bad, I heard Fourth is a nice guy, quiet and easy going, you'll like him”.
Gemini couldn't figure out if Phuwin was saying this seriously to cheer him up or was only mocking him and having a lot of fun, but he decided to once again trust his good intentions. Yuuuuup, sometimes even Gemini Norawit Boonprasert wanted to trust someone's good intentions, but usually he was suspicious and he only had that trust for his closest people like his brother Dunk or his best friend Phuwin.
“What are you talking about, Phu? It can't be that bad?! This will be a nightmare! I'm supposed to live in the same room as Professor Zee's pet. Damn, just thinking about it makes me want to puke. What were they thinking, putting us in a room together?! Moreover, he is a Formula 1 fan, blah! Formula 1 isn't even a sport! They're only wasting fuel! It's dangerous to our whole planet!”
The more they talked about it, the more Norawit focused on his hatred to this boy and everything he liked. If there was something Nattawat liked, Norawit had to hate it. He obviously couldn't like something this damn nerd loved.
“Don't shout, I think it will be nice, he's a nerd, maybe you'll learn something from him, that would be good thing”. Phuwin hit him with a fist on the arm.
“Yeah, you can think so, because you got Boom, the biggest hottie in the entire Institute. I'd be happy to have him as a roommate too. Just think, with Boom you can talk calmly, go out, go to a party, and Nattawat? Damn, I bet this teacher's pet will have his nose stuck in a book all day long. I just hope he won't harass me or force me to do the same”.
“Don't get discouraged so easily, how do you know it won't be fun? You didn't give him a chance”.
“I just know. Why did they do it? They want us to kill each other?”
Gemini imagined himself knocking Fourth out during boxing class and looking down on him. Beating him could actually be quite fun. Especially in front of everyone, to show everyone, who likes Nattawat, how weak he is. And Gem already had a plan in mind to make his roommate's life miserable.
“You'll see, I'll make him ask to change the room, and you know, the teachers like him, they'll definitely agree if he asks”.
“And I won't be surprised if you two become a couple six months from now”. Phuwin said with big smile on his face. He loved getting on Gem's nerves.
“WHAT DID YOU SAY?! Leave me out of this! I hate this little rat and I will never, I repeat, never, have any warmer feelings towards him. He's a nerd and a jerk, and he has absolutely no personality. Also, I'd like to remind you that I'm not a fucking gay, that's sick and disgusting”.
Phuwin felt offended and confused. He was about to say that he himself had been looking at one of the older students differently for a long time, when Gem's words froze him and stopped him in his tracks. They had never talked about this before and Phuwin didn't know Gem's position, but now he had the opportunity to find out for himself. Faced with his friend's attitude, he could only joke but his smile faded away quickly.
“No, you know what? I changed my mind, I'll give you two a month”.
And then he turned on his heel and walked away towards his own room, leaving Gemini alone with his dark thoughts, who, to his own horror, imagined Fourth taking advantage of the situation one night and kissing him. The vision was so surreal and at the same time irritating that Gem went into his own room, slamming the door in frustration.
He didn't expect that his biggest rival and worst nightmare would already be waiting for him, sitting at his desk.
Fourth Nattawat, wearing a slightly oversized gray hoodie, was leaning over his textbooks and notebooks, taking notes furiously as if someone has been running after him. In front of him was an open laptop on a topic about the impact of social media on interpersonal relationships and their behavior in everyday life.
Hearing the door slam, Fourth jumped up from his seat in fear and looked fearfully towards the newcomer.
“Why are you staring like you've never seen a human being? What kind of weirdo are you?” Gemini growled rudely, furiously throwing his backpack onto the floor next to his bed.
“Gemini... I...” Fourth started to speak, but Norawit interrupted him.
“Don't talk to me unnecessarily, I don't like it when someone bothers me. Just because they made us live together doesn't mean we have to like each other, understand?”
Fourth could only nod. The aura surrounding Gemini overwhelmed him, making him feel like Gem had power over him.
“Go back to your stupid studies or whatever you're doing, I won't bother you. At least today, I'm tired of dealing with idiots”.
Fourth struggled to pretend that those words meant nothing to him. In order not to upset Norawit even more, he sat back down with his books, but now he couldn't concentrate. His hands were shaking and writing even one sentence was torture. Fourth decided he couldn't learn or write anything else for the time being, so he closed his laptop, put it in his bag, and checked his phone notifications (mostly messages from his friends, Mark Pakin, Pahn, and his cousin, First Kanaphan and several notifications from Instagram, which he disliked but was forced to use), and then left the room without informing his roommate where he was going, why or for how long. For now, he preferred to avoid any lengthy conversation with Gemini, whose toes had obviously been stepped on by someone.
Fourth really wanted to believe that Gem wasn't always like this, but now that they were living together, he suddenly discovered that Norawit wasn't much different than he was during his classes at the Institute.
“At least Gemini is himself and doesn't pretend to be someone else. That's fine”, The boy who never cried or laughed whispered to himself, trying to find comfort in it, but the thought that maybe Gemini was as mean and arrogant and selfish asshole as the people in Fourth's group thought he was made him get goosebumps.
Fourth went to Mark's room, where Pahn was also waiting for him. The girl immediately noticed his worried face.
“What's going on? Don't tell me it's Nor-...?”
Pahn didn't have to finish her statement, Mark did it for her. They both sat on the floor and worked together on the presentation that Professor Zee Pruk had assigned them to prepare on the last day of their training camp. Mark brought an old, unused dark green board from the storage room, which was written on with special chalk, and Pahn took care of everyone's drinks and snacks.
Fourth pulled the pillow off Mark's roommate Poon's bed and sat down between his friends.
Poon Mitpakdee was Pahn's twin brother, although they did not look much alike. But they definitely had one thing in common: they were adorably clumsy and wonderfully romantic. Fourth loved talking to them and spending time with them, even though he had only met them two weeks ago on the first day of training camp in the countryside. He liked them immediately. All three of them had a positive approach to life and were always looking for a solution to a given problem instead of sitting and complaining about the fact that something could not be done. Fourth was very impressed with them.
Mark Pakin was the most mysterious of them all. He didn't talk much about himself, but he could talk for hours on scientific topics, especially those related to physics or astronomy. In all fairness, he was so handsome that Fourth questioned his own feelings for someone else he had known for much longer.
“Well, Gemini is like that, don't worry about this. I'll deal with it somehow”.
Fourth assured them, although he didn't really feel reassured at all. Gemini aroused conflicting feelings in him.
“Definitely? Because if you want, you can live with me and Poon, I'm sure Poon won't mind, but I can ask him when he'll be back”.
“No, you don't have to, but thank you, it's very nice”.
“A little thing, that's what friends are for, right?”
Friends?
Fourth didn't expect to hear something like that at all. So he found new friends? So easy?
Fourth couldn't believe his luck. Pahn and Mark gave him the peace and respite he needed so much. But Nattawat couldn't smile sincerely. He forced himself to do something that looked at least a little like a smile. But the truth was that there was only one person who could make him smile sincerely. The problem was that this same person made him cry at night and made him feel like he wasn't manly enough to call himself a man.
Fourth didn't know who or what he really was anymore. He wanted to let it all out, to cry, but he was taught to never show any emotions. Instead he forced himself to hold it all inside.
Mark wanted to interject, seeing his moody expression, but Pahn nudged his shoulder and whispered softly.
“Leave him alone, give him space, let him catch his breath. He got Gemini as a roommate, I think that in itself is very difficult for him, let's not make it worse”.
Mark nodded, agreeing with her.
Pahn safely changed the topic, starting to talk about what they had already learned about the case that was the focus of their presentation. Fourth breathed a sigh of relief when he realized that his new friends would not force him to talk about what had been so difficult and painful for him. He knew one thing for sure: that he didn't want to go back to his room, which was now suddenly no longer his safe zone, where he could hide from the whole world, licking his wounds like a wounded wolf.
