The Move
After James's painful goodbye I promised to write and went on the train. I took a seat by the window and looked out. A minute later a young woman about the age of 26 and her three children stood by my side. "I'm awfully sorry Miss, but the rest of the train is full. Do you mind if we sit with you?" She asked.
"No I don't mind. Go right ahead." The woman and her youngest two, both girls sat in the booth across from me. Her last child, a boy most likely about the age of 8 stood by her side. He couldn't fit in the booth with his mother and sisters. The woman looked at me uncomfortably.
"Is it alright if Walter sits with you?" I nodded and Walter sat down next to me. I turned my head back to the window and dazed off for the hour long drive. Once we pulled into the train station the woman stood up and held out her hand. "By the way I'm Caroline Vincent, you seem to be new to the city, if you came to work here's my address, my husband posts job listings in the newspaper. So I may be able to help." She handed me a little slip of paper with an address typed on it and the name Edward Vincent.
"Thank you." I replied politely and Caroline and her children left. I then myself left the train and went to collect my truck. I got a cab to bring me to Mary's house and in 10 minutes I was there. I went up to the door and Mary let me in. She played as a gracious hostess and asked me how I was. Mary had a servant show me to my room and said her husband will bring my trunk up when he returned. My room was simple but pretty. I sat down on my new bed and wondered what my new life will be like. I went downstairs to sit with Mary a bit when I heard her husband walk in through the door. He took one look at me and walked away.
"Oh just ignore Clarence, he's always in a bad mood when someone new is here. Helen will you go tell my husband to bring up Miss. Heaven's trunk when he can." Helen the servant girl walks swiftly up the stairs to go talk to Clarence. Helen came back down after a bit and tells Mary that Clarence will bring up my trunk after supper. After that she goes to help prepare the meal. Mary and I sit in silence while we sew. I know supper will only be in a hour yet time moves so slowly, I start to wonder if me leaving was a mistake, but too late now. Finally Helen gets us all for supper and we eat at a long table. During the meal Mary talks to Clarence to say certain things like "Did you know that Anna's brother John is running for mayor of my old town?" In reply Clarence would mumble something back. It went on like this forever. Eventually night came and I said goodnight to Mary and thanked her again for letting me stay. Helen followed me up to my room with a jug where she poured out a bit of water into a bowl so I can use in the morning. Then she left and I was left alone. I undressed myself and put on a nice nightgown. I set my dressing gown neatly on a peg at the door and neatly folded up my dress, bustle, and corset among with other things and tucked it into my truck with the others. I braided my hair and laid down in my new bed. I close my eyes and try to sleep, but I can't. All I can think of is that I'm already an inconvenience to Clarence and Mary. But eventually I fall asleep. I dream of when I was little girl, of better times.
