The First Day
Mary was shocked last night when I told her where I would be working. She didn't believe me when I told her that I was working a Blueson's shop. Mary then proceeded to tell me every piece of gossip she's heard about him. This includes the rumor that Mr. Blueson has not left his shop in three years, and that his only friends are his assistant, Mr. Seer and the dead people he takes pictures of. But nether less this morning I got up, and went to work. Mary wanted me to take a cab but I insisted on walking. The walk took me about ten minuets. Which leads me to now, as I stand underneath the little sign that says "W. Blueson Photography." I take one more deep breath and walk in. Everything happened so fast, I hope I will be okay at this job. The same man is at the desk today, Mr. Seer. "Ah Miss Heaven! It's nice to see that you haven't been scared off yet. Let me show you around." Mr. Seer got up from the chair and started leaving the room. I was still holding my purse and had my bonnet on and I must admit it felt weird walking around with that stuff but it was clear Mr. Seer wasn't going to notice. He took me into a side room that looked like a small parlor with lots of chairs "This is our waiting room for our clients family's." He then quickly walked out almost doing a spin and went to a door across from the one we went in. Inside was a staircase that Mr. Seer didn't walk up. "This is the staircase to William's house. I wouldn't go up there unless told to." He then spins around again and goes to the door where he found Mr. Blueson yesterday. Mr. Seer knocked on the door and Mr. Blueson poked his head out.
"What are you doing Charles?"
"Just showing our lovely secretary around. May she come in?"
"No I'm just about to take a picture. Speaking of which, why aren't you helping me?"At that Mr. Seer then took me back to my desk and explained what I had to do.
"Just write down the name of the deceased or almost deceased and when they died. It's one dollar for every picture and one fifty if the person is past one day dead. Usher family to the waiting room. Widows usually like tea by the way. If someone comes in just go and knock on the back door. That's where I'll be. Oh and if a young woman comes in asking for me just tell her I died, or something. Do you get everything?"
"Yes, Mr. Seer."
"Please call me Charles, but don't call William 'William', he won't like that." Then he leaves and I end up sitting alone. I spy a coat rack in the corner of the room with one top hat and a coat sitting on it. I go up and gently set my bonnet on that too. I go back to my seat and look at the door waiting for someone to walk in. Mr. Seer, I mean Charles, sure is a character. I didn't want to say it but who could the young woman be? He was wearing a ring, maybe it's a mistress. Sadly it wouldn't surprise me. After a while Charles comes back. "Any new customers?" I shake my head no. "Good then you can write some letters for me. Write one to Mrs. Smith to tell her that her father's pictures are done, and one to the Ferguson Funeral Parlor and tell them that to come pick up a Mr. Arthur Rowe." I find some paper in the desk and I get out some ink and write. Charles walks away but I don't know which room he went in. I finish the letters right as someone walks. It's a man who looks like he's been crying for a while.
"Hello." I say politely to try and make him feel better. He just nodes. "I'm assuming you're here for a photo?" He nodes again. "What is your name? I need to know for records."
"Richard Carr." He says in a cold, sad voice. I write down his name on my paper.
"And who has died and what is their name?"
"My daughter, Alice Carr. She was only seven." I write it all down and when I look up Mr. Carr looks like he might start crying here.
"I'm very sorry Mr. Carr. When did your daughter die?"
"Last night."
"And finally where is she?"
"Out in the front."
"Okay thank you very much. Please follow me." I get up and lead him into the waiting room he sheepishly sits down and I walk out leaving the door open. I then go to the back door where I'm guessing Charles is. I knock on the door and Charles answers. "There is a man who's daughter died last night she's out in the front and the man is in the waiting room." Charles then goes and gets the man and together they carry Alice's coffin in to take a picture. I go and sit back down. After a while Charles and Mr. Carr and carry Alice back out side. He then gives Mr. Carr the picture then he leaves. Time goes by and Mr. Blueson come out of the back room and talks with Charles by my desk. Then they go upstairs for some reason. A young woman who is very pretty then walks in.
"Hello Miss. Is Charles Seer here?" This must be the woman Charles told me about.
"Umm he's dead." I say with a smile in hopes of her not being mad at me.
"Oh Charles, I know he's not dead. I'm his wife, Margaret Seer." She extends her hand for me too shake.
"I'm sorry he told me to say that if you came."
"Yes he's such a jokester."
"I'll go get him." I get up and walk up the stairs just to see the men walking back down.
"What are you doing Miss Heaven?" Asks Mr. Blueson.
"Mr Seer's wife is here and looking for him." Charles runs down the rest of the stairs almost knocking me over. He yells behind him,
"Sorry my dear!" When Mr. Blueson and I walk down the stairs we see Charles holding his wife talking to her. It was clear just by sight that they were in love. "I'll see you tomorrow William." He said with a smile. Then Charles turned to me. "Have a wonderful night My dear Miss Anna." Charles and Margaret then left. I looked at Mr. Blueson and said,
"I'll see you tomorrow Mr. Blueson." I grabbed my stuff and left.
