Chapter 7 : Nothing

♡Jessica Woods♡

The teacher hasn't come yet and I was writing Samuel's name all over the last page of my book as I didn't have anything to do or anyone to speak.

I loved computer science and still do but that didn't mean I loved the computer science period too. There were only four students in this class including me. As it was an optional subject many students preferred photography and art more than computer science.

Roger and Grace didn't like me at all and I too decided not to bother them as they both were always making out whenever they get free time.

On the other hand, Michael who was an Asian boy and used to be my good buddy a few years ago but when he got to know about my crush I had on Samuel he stopped talking to me and always stayed alone in the class, reading something whatever was on his table.

I sighed and closed the book when I heard the door opening with a creak sound and I looked up to welcome our teacher but much to my surprise, Jace was standing at the entrance and glancing around the whole place as if he was planning to buy it while I was staring at him without blinking my eyes.

What is he doing here?

In no time his eyes locked with mine and he was holding an expression that was unreadable. When Jace approached slowly, the Asian boy looked up and quickly placed the bag on his adjacent chair before looking down at his book but Roger stood up and patted Jace's back.

"Hey man!"

"Hey Roger!" Jace greeted back and before Grace could stand up and flirt with him, he started to walk past them which meant he was approaching my direction.

No, no please. Don't come here.

He dropped his books on the table which was beside mine and pulled the chair before sitting on. Without sparing a glance at my direction, he opened a random page from the text book and pretended to read it while I was staring at him intently.

I was staring at him for more than thirty seconds and I found that he blinked his eyes thirteen times while reading. Suddenly he closed the book and stared ahead, tapping his fingers on the table and then turned to me, raising his eye brow.

"What?"

I swallowed the lump in my throat before speaking.

Now you noticed me huh?

Don't try to ignore me because you can't!

Why did you come here and sit beside me when you have so many seats to sit on?

Instead of asking what my mind said, I whisper-yelled. "What're you doing here?"

"Uh.. to study, maybe." he shrugged and I grumbled.

"I'm serious."

"Oh, hey serious!" he nodded at me before opening his book. I gritted my teeth and closed his book harshly which made him turn at me with a frown on his face.

"Jace, I'm really serious. What are you actually doing here? This is not your grade and you're elder than us and how come you-" he interrupted my rant.

"No one informed you?" he asked and I shook my head in confusion. He let out a sigh as if I was annoying the hell out of him.

"I failed." he mumbled, looking at his books.

"Pardon?"

he looked up and glared at me whether I didn't hear it properly or wanted to hear that one more time.

"I failed okay?"

"You WHAT?" I shrieked and everyone even the Asian boy gave us some weird looks. Jace sighed and waved his hand in a 'it's nothing' gesture and they nodded before getting back to their works.

Jace clenched his jaw before turning to me.

"Listen, last year I didn't get good grades in computer science and the teacher insisted me to redo the exam as I can't leave the school with a big F." he explained.

"But why did you come here?"

"Because I failed, Goddamnit." he groaned.

"No no. I mean, why can't you do the exam without attending these classes again?" I asked and he bit his inner cheek as if he was in deep thoughts.

"I'm not good at either practical or theory and I didn't attend most of the classes last year so I should learn something about it before doing it." he told and I noticed Grace peeking glances at our direction now and then but I pretended to ignore it.

"Oh."

"Y'know, computer science is very hard than we think." he stated and I shook my head.

"Not for me."

"What do you mean by that?" he asked, furrowing his eye brows.

"I always get good grades in this subject." I stated proudly and he raised his eyebrow.

"To be honest, it's really hard to believe." he told. "But anyways, I hope I made a good decision by sitting beside you then."

"Absolutely, unless you don't want me to be your tutor." I beamed and he rolled his eyes.

"Alright! I'll ask you if I have any doubts." he stated and I leaned closer to him.

"Really?"

he jerked his head backwards as if I was some kind of alien. "Woah. Everyone's gonna think that we're making out." he hissed and I leaned back, looking down as I couldn't hide the flush of embarrassment that was rising on my cheeks.

"Dramatic ass." I muttered, peeking a glance at him and he was giving me an unamused look.

"You're not a good girl I thought, are you?" he asked and I raised my eye brow.

"I never said I'm a good girl, did I?" I retorted and before he could speak, the teacher entered in.

"Sorry for the delay, I had- Oh, welcome Jace!" Mrs.White beamed and Jace stood up. I was surprised that this teacher was with him on a first-name basis while she didn't know the four of us names properly.

Jace must be the definition of popular.

"Nice to meet you Mrs.White." he greeted politely.

"Happy to have you in my class." she smiled at him but sooner her smile vanished when she glanced at me. "Well.. Jace, why don't you come and sit beside Micheal or Grace?"

I sighed as I knew that the whole class hated me even the teacher too as she knew that I was extremely good in this subject rather than her.

Jace looked down at me but I stared ahead eventhough I could feel his gaze on me then he glanced back at the teacher and told. "Is there any problem if I, uh, sit with her?" he gestured to me and Grace frowned at me for no reason and the teacher gave me a dirty look before shaking her head at him.

"No. You can sit wherever you want." she stated and Jaced nodded, giving her a tight lipped smile before sitting down. He was much taller than me while he was sitting too.

The teacher started the lesson and Jace leaned closer to the table, laying his intertwined hands on the table as if he was listening to each and every word she provides. Whenever she asked 'got it?' or 'understood?', he would nod his head like a kindergarten boy.

"Stop staring at me." Jace hissed, focusing his gaze ahead and honestly I didn't know I was staring at him until he said and I thanked God that the teacher hadn't noticed it.

"Uh, sorry." I averted my gaze to the teacher where everyone was looking at and listened to her boring lecture.

When Mrs.White gave us some works to do regarding the lesson she taught today, everyone opened their books and eventually started to do it as she was staring at each and everyone intently, adjusting her eyeglasses.

Suddenly Jace's phone vibrated and he glanced at the teacher whether she was looking at but she was standing infront of Michael's desk and reading the book that he used to read.

Jace sighed in relief before taking his phone out of his pocket and I realized it was from Samuel when I peeked a glance at his screen where the name was popping as 'Sam'. Jace hung up and quickly typed 'can't talk. What's up?' before sending it. In a few seconds the reply came as 'Coach needs you right now. Come soon.'

Jace stared at the screen before locking it and tucking inside his pocket. I pretended to do my work when he glanced at my direction.

As soon as the bell rang, he darted off grabbing his books. He didn't even say anything to me before he leaves and if I said it didn't bother me at all, I'd be probably lying.

But today, besides the subject, I found this period really interesting and somewhere in my heart felt warm when I thought I could spend more time with Jace hereafter.
----

Louise texted me to come over the parking lot after the last period's bell rang as there'd be a prefects meeting about something. I said okay as soon as I read the message but now I didn't think I could be on time as that old grumpy physics teacher gave us a sudden test and didn't collect the sheet till everyone finished it and I hoped Jace wouldn't mind if I arrived late for the meeting.

I hung my bag over my shoulder as I rushed outside shoving past the people who were blocking my way but I stopped running when I reached the basketball court in case Samuel was playing on the court and passing out on the spot when he saw me running.

I know I'm overreacting but it's true though.

I slowly walked past the basketball court as my eyes searched the extraordinary player whose name was Samuel Collins but he was nowhere to be seen at the court where every players were running and chasing the player who was having the ball in his hands.

Out of the blue, the big orange coloured ball flying dangerously fast towards my direction and I was staring at the ball in widened eyes not moving an inch.

Before it could contact with my face, a large hand tossed it away and the ball bounced up and down a bit before calming down.

Thankyou Jesus for saving my pretty face!

"Can't y'all see there's a girl here?" a very familiar voice echoed the whole place and some of the players raised their hands in apologize and some of them asked me to throw the ball but instead of throwing the ball and going away with a smile, I quickly turned behind and bumped my forehead with his chest.

I looked up and my heart fluttered when I saw Samuel standing infront of me very closely on his basketball jersey and gripping the strap of his duffle bag which was hanging over his shoulder loosely.

"You okay?" he asked and I felt my heart was racing nineteen to the dozen.

"Y-Yeah." I stammered as I haven't experienced the soft side of Samuel much. He was coated with sweat but still he smelled of lemon.

"What are you looking at over there?" Samuel questioned and I quickly started to think a good lie.

"Err, Jace." I lied and he knitted his eye brows together.

"Jace?" he repeated in confusion and I slowly nodded.

"Uh, he's inside." he gestured over his shoulder, pointing to the changing room. "Do you want.." he trailed off glancing behind as he was checking whether Jace was coming out or not.

"No, no. I gotta go." I said hastily and started to move away from this place but my heart refusing to move away from him so while walking I looked back and Samuel was standing where I left and staring at me. Crossing my fingers mentally, I waved my hand slowly hoping he'd wave me back and luckily he waved me back.

Grinning like an idiot, I turned back and headed towards the parking lot before Jace comes so he couldn't find that I was pretty late. I saw a large group formed in the middle of the parking lot. When I found Louise's blonde hair, I quickly approached towards it and the more I got close, the more I heard Oliver shouting.

Suddenly Oliver's eyes met mine and he clenched his jaw as he gestured me to come closer which made everyone's eyes turn towards me. I slowly approached and everyone moved aside making me a path to go which seemed really weird but eventually I approached till I stand infront of Oliver.

"What's the time now?" he gritted his teeth and I glanced at my wrist and then back at him.

"I don't have a watch." I replied nonchalantly and everyone tried to hold their laugh but some of them couldn't so they laughed louder which made Oliver even more angry.

What's his problem?

"Ha ha. Very funny." he stated flatly and glanced at his watch. "You're twenty minutes late but instead of apologizing, you're trying to make me laugh by your stupid remarks." he spat and I blinked twice trying to realize why he was mad at me.

"I'm sorry." I apologized quietly and he narrowed his eyes.

"You're sorry? If I'm correct you have to apologize to the prefects board atleast two hundred times." he stated and I furrowed my eye brows.

"For what?"

"For not being a prefect. At all." he said through his clenched teeth and I bit my lower lip.

"W-What do you mean?"

"Do you think you deserve this badge?" he pointed to my badge which was pinned on my shirt collar. I ducked my head down as I held back the tears that were threatening to fall down.

"Excuse me Oliver, but don't you think it's irrelevant?" I heard Louise say.

That's my girl!

"Shut up unless you want me to make your life miserable." Oliver threatened and that made the whole crowd to listen to him in pin-drop silence.

"See.. you don't even try to defend yourself. Still I couldn't understand why the hell the prefects board has selected a coward like you. You deserve nothing. Absolutely NOTHING. That's why you're alone always." he barked and I heard the gasps but no one were on my side as they couldn't do anything other than witnessing it. I bit my lower lip harder and quickly wiped off the tear that rolled down from my eye.

"You jus-"

"Can you tell me why did you bring up this?" I snapped, looking up at him and I patted my back mentally as the phrase was much stronger than I expected.

"Because you were late and I have to repeat the same words I said for the whole twenty minutes because of your unpunctual." he fumed and I shot daggers at him.

"Did I ask you to repeat the words?" I fired back.

"Don't use that tone with me." he warned.

"Then don't stick your shitty nose in my business." I retorted and he tilted his head and smirked evilly as if he was planning to kill me which makes me nothing but painful.

"Did you forget that I'm the deputy head prefect?"

"So? does that mean you could tell me that I don't deserve this badge?" I asked and his glare deepened as he kept a step towards me which lessened the distance between us.

"Actually, I'm stating the obvious." he said coldly.

"Oh, I don't care." I said flatly.

"You'd care when Samuel says that." he scoffed and I gritted my teeth at the mention of Samuel.

"Don't you dare bring up my personal matters into this." I warned, jabbing my index finger on his chest.

I noticed that he was clenching his hand and unclenching it as he asked challengingly. "Or else what?"

"I would.." I paused, wondering what actually I would do to this intimidating arrogant guy.

But before I could finish my sentence, he grabbed my arm painfully and crashed my chest with his.

"Let me go." I winced but that made him tighten the grip even more.

"You're just piece of shit with a pretty face." he hissed and let me go off of him and I stumbled backwards and wiped the wet tears away from my face furiously as everyone gave me pity looks and evil smirks.

"Fuck you, Oliver." I scowled at him and dashed away.

Hey Lovely Readers!
