The assignment was to write a short story starting with "I never knew unicorns existed until.....". It had to be turned in at the end of the hour, so I typed up whatever popped into my head.

I never knew unicorns existed until I chewed 5gum.

I was soaking in the warm sunshine as I sat on a park bench. My eyes were skimming over my history book and I was minding my own business, when this annoying, screechy voice disturbed my eardrums. “What do you want, Alyssa?”

“I need some money.”

I looked up.  Alyssa stretched her arm out while her boyfriend, Xander, like the lackadaisical bum he was, stood in the background, watching a butterfly go by. “No.”

“We need some food, Ethan!”

“Why are you here anyway? Shouldn’t you be your friend’s house, studying like you told Mom you would?”

She rolled her eyes. “I was until she had to leave for her grandma’s funeral. Now, please lend me a ten!”

“Hm, let me think, no.”

“Oh come on!”

“Come on, man. Harmony is hungry too,” Xander said.

I didn’t know who this Harmony was until I noticed the little chubby hand grabbing his pant leg. A little girl, with big brown eyes, hid behind him. “May we pwease?” She said and she stared down at her feet. No happiness was on her face. I couldn’t say no  and I wanted to bring up her spirits.

“Alright.” I shoved my hand into my pocket and I handed Alyssa a wadded ten. “You owe me.”

“No promises!” 

“You want to go to Taco Bell?” Xander asked and Harmony shrugged.

I sighed and I pulled out a pack of 5 gum from my pocket. I popped a slice into my mouth and a peppermint flavor coated my tongue. My attention was on reading the Renaissance Era, hoping they caught the hint I didn’t want them here. As I tried to block out their voices and read at the same time, my mind lingered on to Harmony.

I glanced up. Her eyes were still on her feet. I thought about what I could do to put a smile on her face. I had no idea what to do. The idea of a unicorn popped into my head, but I knew that was impossible.

All of a sudden, white fur grew on the park bench. An explosion of glitter clouded my vision. I felt myself rising into the air. Once the glitter smokescreen disappeared, I saw Alyssa, Xander, and Harmony gaping at me. I looked down and I was sitting on a magnificent unicorn. Harmony’s face lit up and she showed her buck-tooth smile.

I smiled back and I yelled,“This is how it feels to chew 5gum!”
