Art Competition: Color Palettes

TheKitkatqueen made a art contest, and I decided to enter and do a painting. It sounded like a fun idea, so I thought "Why not, let's do it!" Plus my other friend summoned/tagged me in the comments.

The color palettes they gave were:

And I chose to use the color palette "d".

I first copied by drawing on printer paper and tried out tbe color palette to see what it was like, and then once I was done I went off to paint the actual drawing.

The rough draft looked like this:

And here is the final painting I did:

(I took two photos they are in different lighting but are of the same painting. The reasoning for two photos is because I don't know which looks better...)

(This final version is the one that I enter into the competition.)

The whole process of the drawing and then painting it and finishing it took at least a month. About 32 days. (In the left bottom corner of the painting at the part of the page which isn't painted there is the date I started and ended: July 9, 2019--August 9, 2019) And I would add to it nearly every day. Drawing it out in my sketch book took about 12 days approximately (but I wasn't drawing every second, it was an off and on kind of process..) ...considering the day I took a photo of just the drawing.... But the final version of the painting took the most time. I think I worked hard on it.

I noticed that I changed a couple things from the draft to the final, such as I added more details in the final one. I also made the ocean larger, by making the horizon line higher up, to give the effect that the ocean is farther, and more vast. Another thing I did that I changed was the area behind the village, in between the mountainous castle and the village. In the draft it was just a long amount of purple water colorpaint there, but I changed it in the final painting to be a meadow of purple flowers, and I added more detail. The two versions are different, but I am very proud of my final version.

The materials I used were pencils, water color paint, and I mixed them to my best of my ability to look like the color scheme, and "Graphik line maker" pens. In a nutshell this is how I created it: I first drew it out, then I copied the drawing so that I could paint over it to see what the colors looked like, and then I actually colored the actuall painting, then added some details using the pens.

I like the painting, I think it is a great fantasy scene. And there is a lot of detail, and movement. I think the shading is nice, especially in the tree and in many parts of the elf-woman. I think the colors work well with the image, and I did a good job.

Overall I think I took the challenge and executed it well, and made a painting that used the colors in a way that I think looks nice. When I looked at the colors the blue, green, and purple, it reminded me of gems or dragon scales and I thought they would be a good color scheme for a fantasy scene that included a dragon. I liked this challenge, it was fun and interesting, because it helps an artist get out of their comfort zone by having the limitation of four colors. And though it is a limitation, it also creates many different options for things to do, and it opens up to a variety of possibilities. Because having a limited color palette it kind of allows an artist to think outside the box and think: "what can I do with just these colors that I can make look amazing, creative, and an art piece that one could be proud of?"

And that was what I did. I thought to myself about what I could do, and I think that is an important part of this challenge.

Overall it was fun making this piece, and I also enjoyed talking about it! I think I might do something like this again if it was suggested to me.

I hope you all liked my art! Thank you so much. It means a lot that there are some people, other than myself that also enjoy the art I make.
