Calm Before The Storm
Dew stretched her talons out, letting her pale scales bask in the warm sunlight. She blinked the sleep out of her eyes and sat up, her tail curled around her talons. Getting up from the rock she was resting on, she spread her white wings and jumped into the air, feeling the refreshing wind flap against her.
She glided over to a big tall tree with lush greenery, pink and yellow flowers covering the trunk. She tucked her wings in as she dived into an opening in the tree, where her mother would be.
Instead of landing gracefully like she had hoped, she tripped over her own foot when she had attempted to land, and tumbled into a patch of flowers
She blinked the stars out of her eyes and looked up at the four pairs of eyes glaring down at her.
One of the pairs belonged to a glorious rainwing, covered in sparkly pink jewels. She was pink with yellow dots around her eyes, her horns were dark purple, and her eyes were stormy grey. All the colors suggested that she was calm but the tip of her ear was blood red which meant she was aggravated.
Dew scrambled up and bowed her head.
"You're late." Snapped the dragon.
"Sorry, mother," Dew replied staring down at her talons.
The queen returned her gaze to the other dragons. "Well, come over here. We need to discuss the new threat of the Myriad." The queen said. Dew's mother was being tough in front of the guests which meant they were important. Usually if she was late all her mother would do is roll her eyes and chuckle. She looked around at the dragons. There was an icewing, Dew's father, a Sandwing, and mother's general, jaguar, who sat stone cold with no expression, her colors were not bright at all, black and greys splashed back and forth constantly flickering on her scales.
Dew stepped into the circle of dragons. They were In front of a stone table. On the table there was a scroll, probably the warning letter mother was telling her about earlier.
Mother opened the scroll to reveal scribbly writing written in blood red ink ( at least she hoped it was ink) that said:
We want your jewels.
We want your riches.
Bring them to the cave that leads to the Sandwing's territory.
We want your jewels.
We want your riches.
Don't make us want your blood.
Dew shivered even though it was sticky hot. The writing seemed to silence the whole Rainforest. The Sandwing spoke first.
"So it's true? The Myriad is really real?" He didn't need an answer, the silence answered the question and a million more.
Since the Jade mountain Prophecy the Rainwings had gotten extremely wealthy. Thanks to Queen Glory. Who had stepped down from her responsibilities when she became too old.
"What are we going to do Mother?" Dew asked the queen. Mother turned her gaze on her, nothing except courage shown in her eyes.
"Not give up." She responded. "We will not bow down to the Myriad because of some threat." She continued. "We will fight back."
The rainwing General lifted her head, as if to show her pride for her queen. She turned to look at Dew's mother. "should I go make the announcement."
"Yes, Boa." Replied the queen. And then to Dew she said "Why don't you go with her?" Dew scrunched up her snout. Of course she was too young to participate in 'queen' talk.
She was 8 for three moons sake!
Dew stomped away and jumped into the air racing after Boa.
Dew found Boa in the middle of the village, a dragonet sitting loyally by her side. That Must be her daughter, Dew thought. What was her name? Oh yeah, Amazon.
Boa had probably just finished telling them about the letter because all of their expression were filled with worry. As Dew glided down to where Boa was sitting, she notice that dark clouds were covering the sun. Storms are bad luck they steal the warmth away from your scales. That was what her Mother used to say at least.
This time Dew landed successfully and managed not to roll into the crowd of blue, black Rainwings.
Boa continued to explain that the queen would not give in and that they would fight back with everything they had. Dew's claws shifted back and forth, little raindrops landed on her head. She could hear the buzzing of the rainforest, the birds chirping, the bugs clicking, she could even hear the raindrops lading on leaves.
Her thoughts drifted to her mother. Why did she want Dew to leave? What were her and her father talking about? Finally she couldn't stand it, she glanced a look at Boa. She must have taken a hint and rolled her eyes and continued to answer questions from the crowd like, do we finally get to spit at people(that was a question from a dragonet who was two and had no idea how serious this matter was). That was as good enough as a yes Boa would give.
Dew swept away as fast as she could without running into something. Again Dew reached the giant tree, it took all her strength not to crash into it. She flapped her wings almost soundlessly So she was hovering over a branch. She landed on it and scampered over to a window.
She peeked her head in she was just out of veiw of her parents but she could still hear them.
"You should go back to the Ice kingdom. Who knows how bad it will get here, Sleet." Said the voice of her mother.
"No I won't leave you and Dew." Responded the strong voice of her father. Considering how they were talking to each other the Sandwing probably have had left by then. The Sandwing was probably a general of sorts, maybe the queen called him in after the letter. Probably for help.
"You can bring Dew with you.
"She hasn't gone to the Ice kingdom yet and this way she'll be safe." No,no,no! Dew thought. She couldn't leave the Rain forest now! She was extremely(unlike flying) good at aiming her venom and plus, she had her frost breath.
"No, I want to fight." Her father replied. Dew could hear her mother growl, but they didn't continue the conversation.
Then they went into battle tactics. Who to bring on the attack, who should stay behind.
Dew turned away from the window, this was even more boring the hearing Boa answer questions from a dragonet.
Dew's ears perked up. She could hear the voices of her parents. She could hear the distant chatter from the Rainwing Village. But the forest sounds of birds and beetles were dead silent. She strained her ears to try and catch some noise but there was nothing. No sound at all.
Calm before the Storm.
An ear shattering scream echoed through the forest, bouncing off trees carrying it's self all the way the Dew's ears. Everything blurred together for Dew from then on.
She remembered racing over to the village her heart hammering against her chest, her mother's wing beats behind her. She remembered arriving to the center of the village, seeing something that almost made her heart stop.
Sandwings, Seawings, Rainwings, Icewings. Every tribe Dew could think of, and even some that she didn't recognize, were there. Rainwings attacking Rain Wings, it was madness. The only way Dew could tell which Ranwings were good was that one half was completely night black.
Blood splattered the bright green under growth. Dew continues to flap her wings her heart about to break through her chest. She didn't want to go down their. She felt like the two year old dragonet. She never really understood how serious this was.
Dew's mother swept past her at a speed she could never achieve. She dove into battle immediately, like it was her first nature. Slitting throats and spitting venom on wings and snouts.
Dew shook her head and went to fly after her mother, legs shaking. When she reached the ground and landed without cracking her skull, she was immediately knocked down. She looked up at her attacker. A big burly Mudwing stood above her. Her purple cruel eyes bore into her's. Dew tried to scramble up but the Mudwing had a good hold on her. The purple eyed dragon was about to bite Dew's throat when a flash of blue and yellow clashed into the Mudwing.
A Rainwings tousled with the Mudwing who was at least twice the size of her. Out of nowhere the Rainwings spread her wings out and flashed purple, orange, yellow. Blinding bright colors, the Mudwings stood in awe for a moment before the Rainwing spit black venom on her brown face.
The Mudwings screamed and fell over writhing in agony. Dew looked away. But as her savior ran past her they shared a look. The Rainwing jumped back into battle, reminding Dew to do the same.
Dew was about to help a young Rainwing dragonet battle a Skywing but once again she was pounced on. This time Dew could tell this wasn't a Mudwing. It was fast and made quick and precise movements. Dew
Looked up and saw a dark grey dragon, with electric blue eyes. Black smoke billowed over its body like storm clouds. It wasn't a dragon Dew recognized. In fact, Dew didn't think it was any of the Tribe's. The grey dragon raised his talons and cut her face. Dew screamed in pain.
She tried to wiggle out of the dragon's grip but despite it's size, Dew couldn't move him an inch.
Dew roared In anger. She hated feeling helpless she hated feeling like she couldn't do anything right. Then she realized if this dragon wasn't recognizable to her, then he must not know what powers She had.
Dew took a deep breath feeling an icy chill in the back of her throat she paused for a moment, cherishing the look of confusion as the dragon saw the ice buildup in the back of her throat.
And then she let all her ice out. Just like Rainwing venom Frost breath is very painful. The dragon roared in pain and Dew was able to kick him off. Before Dew could finish him off the cowardly dragon took off, hardly able to fly away.
Dew, feeling rejuvenated, was about to return to battle when she saw the body.
White as ice, glistening with blood. Father. Was the only though that she could manage. She collapsed to the muddy ground. She nudged her father with her snout. No response. He was already stiff, he must have died at the beginning of the battle.
She knew she should be crying. Isn't that what dragons do when they lose some one? But no tears came. She simply felt nothing. There is no way to explain nothing. The only way I can put it is that all you are in the moment is there, you are not living, and you are not dead. You are nothing.
The roar of her mother brought her back to reality. Her mother was fighting a huge seawing, who was flashing his scale lights aggressively. The seawing was currently on top of the Queen biting into her shoulder with long sharp teeth.
Dew ran as fast as she could to her mother, talons slipping on wet mud. Dew crashed into the dark blue Seawing. Dew slashed her face with her claws and was Spitting venom on his wings when she heard another scream from her mother. Leaving the seawing to die from her venom, Dew raced over to her mother but stopped dead in her tracks.
Five wing spans away from Dew was her mother. Her kind, loving, funny mother stood with a sword sticking out from her stomach. Blood trickled out of her mouth and the queen of the Rainwings fell.
The attacker pulled his sword out of her mother and quickly rushed into another fight. Dew ran to her mother shaking her.
"Mother? Mother wake up! Don't leave me!" Dew whaled but the queen was already gone. Her grey eyes staring at something that wasn't there. The rain pounded on her lifeless body washing away her blood. And Dew wished that she could be washed away.
The battle raging behind her fell into silence, it was as if Dew's brain was saying. This doesn't matter, the battle is pointless.
But Dew remembered the Rainwing who had saved her, the young dragonet who was fighting by himself. And then, she realized that she had no parents. She had no mother, no queen. The Rainwings had no queen.
They have me.
She was the only Rainwing with Royal blood. Therefore she was the only one fitted to take the responsibility of being a queen. She could not give up. She would not give up.
The sounds of battle returned. Screams of pain and roars of triumph. Dew took one more look at her mother's broken body and bounded into battle.
She was like a hurricane, she lunged on one dragon and before they knew it their life was over. Then she moved onto the next dragon. The way Dew looked at it, if you couldn't feel nothing, you couldn't be hurt.
No matter how many dragons she took down, the attackers just kept coming. What if the whole entire Rainwing tribe just died out? Would the other tribes just inherit their territory? Would they just fade into existence?
Rain and blood cloud her eyes, when she saw a dark shape, she charged towards it. As she blinked the water out of her eyes, she began to realize that the black figure was a Rainwing. As she took a closer look she saw it was the Rainwing that had saved her. She was laying on the ground. She was midnight blue. Her eyes were closed and she looked almost... Peaceful. Then Dew saw the blood. It covered her neck down, all the blood made Dew woozy. Her talons dripped of blood and tail was the color of the ink on the letter. A screech made Dew turn around. She could only see a flash of black before a young Sandwing pounced on her. The Sandwing was fast and immediately had her pinned down, her mouth clamped, and his poison tail aimed for her eye.
This was it. The end of her blood line, the end of the Rainwings. Dew kept her eyes fixed on the black obsidian eyes staring at her.
She was just about to give up the struggle and welcome death when she heard a distant NO! Then bright blinking flash of green erupted from somewhere beside her.
There was a crack, and then a booming crash. And then something unexplainable happened, something like a mix between lighting and fire blazed across the muddy bloodstained land. Blowing the Sandwing of Dew and Dew her self tumbling.
Her scales crackled and pain seared through her body. She screamed in pain. And then as quick the blast came, it disappeared.
Dew staggered to her feet, wincing at the pain. She looked around to see the Myriad picking themselves up, glancing around and flying away. Bodies surround the Rainwing village. There were still many Rainwings but so many Rainwing bodies.
Dew turned around and followed the smoke towering over a figure. As Dew came closer she came to the Rainwing body. Dew resisted the urge to look away from the torn body because there was a new figure there.
A Nightwing dragonet stood there, tears streamed down her face, her scales were emitting some type of green some but otherwise looked unhurt. She was leaning over The Rainwing that had Saved Dew.
The nightwing dragonet looked up showing grey eyes. And vines curving up her black face, to her horns and down the little dragonet's back. Then she realized why the Myriad ran away. This little dragonet almost killed hundreds of dragons. Looking into her grey innocent eyes, Dew felt a chill run down her back. Her eyes were stormy grey, and storms suck the warmth out of dragons.
Could you guys give me feed back on the writing. Or maybe could you Tsunami_Holmes? Just because I really like your Secrets And Sand
