Quite Informal
As the three couples stepped into the gym where the formal was being held, their ears were immediately attacked by the blaring music and the sounds of their classmates chatting near the DJ at the front of the dance floor. The gym was decked out in winter-themed decorations, which had been set up and organized by the group of Nordic kids that Matthew didn't really know well. There was a food and drink table on the right of the gym, and on the left, a photobooth. Matthew was impressed by how nice it looked, even though the gym was dark and the DJ's lights were blinding.
Their eyes fixated on the waves of students who had flocked to the dance floor for a few moments before Kiku appeared in front of them, camera in hand. The six of them didn't even have the time to say hello before Kiku snapped a picture, blinding them with the bright flash of his DSLR. "Sorry, I need these for yearbook" he apologized, giving them a polite smile as he snapped another shot, this time with the six actually smiling. After getting the shot, Kiku scurried off to snap a picture of the next set of kids walking through the gym doors.
As soon as the senior left the six snapped out of the trance of the LEDs and decided to join the rest of the school on the dance floor. In an attempt to outdo Gilbert and Matthew as the cutest couple, Alfred immediately grabbed Arthur's hand and began dancing around with him ridiculously, eliciting a fit of giggles from the Brit. Matthew and Gilbert both watched on in surprise as Arthur dropped his usually cold, sarcastic demeanor and unapologetically enjoyed himself.
Matthew looked at Gilbert with a baffled expression and Gilbert returned the gesture, not having a single idea what had gotten into Arthur as he cheerfully danced around with Alfred. Looking around, Matthew noticed Lovino and Antonio had vanished.
"Well I guess it's just you and me now" Gilbert shrugged, chuckling as Alfred and Arthur dissapeared into the crowd of students.
"That was like watching dog walk on two legs" Matthew responded, still staring at the space where Alfred and Arthur had been dancing a few seconds before. Gilbert laughed at the thought and grabbed Matthew's hand as they inched farther into the crowd towards the music. As the two slipped through the crowd Matthew noticed Ludwig and Feliciano a few feet away from them. Wanting to say hello, Matthew tugged on Gilbert's hand and the two headed in their direction. Feliciano immediately squealed when he saw them and hugged them both as Ludwig gave an awkward wave.
"Dance with us!" Feliciano yelled, trying to be heard over the blaring music. Gilbert and Matthew both nodded and began dancing to the rhythm as Ludwig stood there, not exactly wanting or knowing how to dance. As Ludwig awkwardly bobbed up and down beside them, more people came to join their little dancing cluster until a dance circle was formed. As more and more people joined their circle, Feliciano hopped in the middle and danced for a while before hopping back out to give someone else a chance. Feliciano seemed to start a trend as kid after kid hopped in the circle, pulled their best moves, and hopped back out.
Matthew hysterically laughed as Gilbert forced himself into the circle and pulled the most ridiculous dance moves known to man before hopping back out with a grin on his face. Matthew continued laughing until Gilbert shoved him into the circle, where everyone's eyes were immediately drawn to him. Matthew stood there for a moment with his eyes wide in fear before quickly running back into his place at the perimeter of the circle.
"Oh c'mon Matthew!" Gilbert exclaimed as Matthew glared at him angrily, "Show them your moves!"
"I'll actually kill you" Matthew shot back, his face red as the kids who wanted to see him dance began chanting his name. Before he knew it, the entirety of the circle was cheering his name, and Matthew realized he had no choice but to give in to their demands.
"Don't be a party pooper Birdie!" Gilbert cried, using the cute nickname he had given Matthew as leverage. Matthew continued blushing as he took a deep breath to prepare himself for what could possibly be the most embarrassing moment of his entire life. With his palms sweaty and his face red, Matthew made his way back into the middle of the circle, earning cheers from the crowd that surrounded him. Matthew took one last deep breath before he began dancing. He was only about a second or so into dancing before he was shoved back out of the circle and into the arms of his boyfriend.
Surprised at the harsh shove, Matthew turned back to look at who had just saved him from having to dance in the circle. He snorted as he realized it was Alfred.
"A true American hero..." Matthew uttered sarcastically, smiling as he watched Alfred whip out his best dance moves. The crowd seemed to completely forget about Matthew as they cheered on Alfred, and Matthew could not be more grateful. As soon as Alfred hopped back out of the circle, another kid hopped in, and the cycle continued. Wanting some fresh air after getting so flustered, Matthew pulled Gilbert off the dance floor and to the snack table.
After pouring himself some punch, Matthew took a sip but immediately spit it back into the cup. Gilbert looked at him in confusion as he watched Matthew throw the cup in the trash. "What's wrong?", he questioned, watching as Matthew scrunched his nose.
"Someone spiked the punch" Matthew exclaimed, eliciting a laugh from Gilbert.
"I mean, what do you expect? We're not exactly a school full of angels" Gilbert exclaimed, chuckling as he grabbed a cookie for himself and a cookie for Matthew.
"Trust me, I know. But couldn't they just save that for the after party? It's not like there's going to be a shortage of alcohol at Francis's house" Matthew responded, rolling his eyes as he took a bite of the cookie Gilbert had given him.
Gilbert opened his mouth to respond but was cut off by the sound of the DJ's voice on the speakers. "Alright, this next one's for you couples out there! It's the slowwwww daaaaance!"
"It's our time to shine!" Gilbert exclaimed as the couples found each other and began dancing and the others flocked to the concession stand.
"Oh no Gilbert. I don't know how to d-" Matthew was cut off as Gilbert grabbed him by the wrist and yanked him onto the dance floor. Matthew opened his mouth to protest but couldn't find a reason as Gilbert put his hands around his waist. Not wanting to dissapoint his excited boyfriend and also kind of enjoying the feeling of Gilbert's arms around his waist, Matthew placed his hands on Gilbert's shoulders and followed his lead as they slowly danced through the crowd.
As they continued dancing, Gilbert stared at him like he was worth the world, and Matthew felt his face grow hot as he realized that he never wanted the song to end. In an attempt to try not to show his two left feet, Matthew repeatedly whispered "heel, toe, down up up" under his breath until he could finally move smoothly to the rhythm. Once Matthew had finally gotten it down, he smiled at Gilbert, and Gilbert blushed as he realized something he was far too afraid to say in the moment. He nearly opened his mouth, but was interrupted again as the song came to an end.
Once the song ended, Matthew slid his hands off Gilbert's shoulders and waved a hand in front of his boyfriend's face to bring him back to Earth as he zoned out and continued holding onto Matthew's waist. "Earth to Gilbert!" Matthew called out as the EDM music began again and the kids at the snack table made their way back onto the dance floor.
"Ah! Sorry.. I just- was thinking about something" Gilbert blurted as he let go of Matthew, causing Matthew to tilt his head in curiosity.
"What?" Matthew questioned, smiling at Gilbert and causing Gilbert to turn red in the face for the second time that night and possibly the sixth time in his entire life.
"Nothing. Wanna get another cookie? I don't know which PTA mom made them but we are going to hunt her down and steal her recipe" Gilbert asked, earning a nod and a chuckle from Matthew as he imagined them chasing after some poor mother for her cookie recipe.
As soon as they got to concessions they saw Alfred and Arthur, who were both figuring out that the punch was spiked and proceeding to throw their cups in the trash. "What, neither of you like the punch?" Gilbert asked facetiously, eliciting a laugh from Alfred.
"I saw you guys dancing out there, you looked pretty good. But definitely not as good as us" Alfred bragged, staring at Gilbert as he remembered the provoking wink the German had shot him earlier in the night. Gilbert furrowed his brow for a moment before he remembered the accidental competition he had begun back at their house. Deciding to tease his best friend, Gilbert draped his arm over Matthew's shoulder and smiled.
"That's funny, considering the last time I checked you couldn't dance" Gilbert shot back. Both Matthew and Arthur rolled their eyes, being far too mature to play into the two best friends' silly competition.
"Oh, really now? I can't dance? Then what do you call this?" Alfred asked as he grabbed one of Arthur's hands and wrapped an arm around the Brit's waist before dipping him like a ballroom dancer. Arthur wasn't expecting the gesture and yelped before wriggling out of Alfred's grasp and falling backwards onto the snack table. Matthew and Gilbert watched in what seemed like slow motion as the table collapsed and Arthur fell, the punch bowl flying over him and spilling its contents over his entire body.
Alfred gasped and Matthew and Gilbert hysterically laughed as Arthur sat on the floor covered head to toe in alcoholic fruit punch. As one of the PTA mothers rushed over to help Arthur out and clean up the mess, Arthur shot Alfred a murderous look. Matthew and Gilbert stifled their laughter as Alfred quickly helped Arthur off the ground. As soon as he was on his feet, Arthur gripped Alfred's wrist and angrily dragged him out of the gym towards the bathroom.
"He is a dead man walking" Gilbert exclaimed, laughing as he and Matthew helped the mother clean up some of the cookies on the ground.
"I'm genuinely worried for his safety" Matthew said, eliciting a laugh from his boyfriend.
"Should we go check up on them?" Gilbert asked as he threw a few cookies into the trash.
"No way. I'm not getting killed tonight" Matthew joked. Gilbert gave him a worried smile before shrugging and dragging Matthew back onto the dance floor. This time, the two danced around with Ivan, Francis, and Yao, who seemed to have had their fair share of fruit punch.
After an hour or so more of dancing around with their friends and talking, people began clearing out and heading to Francis's house. Matthew and Gilbert looked around for Alfred, Arthur, Antonio, and Lovino but none of them were anywhere to be found. Figuring the four had ventured somewhere other than the gym, the two headed out into the hallway to find them. They technically weren't allowed to wander outside of the gym because it was against the dance rules, but the PTA parents weren't exactly the best chaperones, so sneaking around them wasn't very hard.
Heading into the bathroom, the two found Alfred and Arthur washing out Arthur's hair, which was still sticky and a little red from the punch. "You guys are still in here?" Matthew asked, wondering why they were still cleaning Arthur up after an entire hour.
"Well it took me 30 minutes to scream at him, and another 30 to clean up" Arthur explained, gesturing towards his sopping pile of clothes on the ground. The Brit was wearing Alfred's dress shirt and pants, and Alfred was wearing nothing but his boxers and his blazer, due to the fact that neither of them had brought a change of clothes into the building. Gilbert and Matthew laughed at the Alfred, who looked ridiculous as he attempted to dry Arthur's hair with the hand towels intended for drying skin, not sopping wet hair.
"Well we want to get going, everyone is heading to Francis's" Matthew spoke as Arthur shook his head like a dog in an attempt to dry it out quicker.
"The only problem is that we can't seem to find Antonio and Lovino" Gilbert explained.
"I think we saw them in the cafeteria" Alfred responded as he buttoned he threw the paper towels in the bin.
"Okay, perfect. Meet us in the car and then we'll all head to the party together" Matthew said as he and Gilbert headed out back into the hallway. The two continued walking down the hallway towards the cafeteria before they saw Antonio and Lovino heading towards them.
"Oh, perfect! We were just looking for you two. Where were you?" Gilbert asked obliviously. Matthew jabbed him in the ribs at his stupidity and Gilbert let out a yelp as Lovino's face turned red.
"We.. were.. um..." Lovino began, his face burning as he tried to spit out the words he was looking for.
"We were looking for Lovino's Othello book! He left it here earlier and we decided to check the cafeteria but it wasn't in there" Antonio quickly interrupted, reaffirming his title as the "King of Smooth" as he provided an excuse for their absence. Matthew tried not to laugh at their attempt at a cover up and winked at Lovino, who, in return, shot Matthew a death glare.
"Oh, well we're heading to Francis's now" Gilbert said, trying not to grin as he finally figured out why Matthew had jabbed him in the ribs so hard. As the four walked back down the hallway towards the entrance, Matthew and Gilbert refrained from teasing Lovino about his red face and Antonio attempted at creating a conversation about how nicely decorated the gym was.
When they finally reached the car after possibly the most awkward walk through the hallway of their entire lives, Alfred and Arthur were already there. Not wanting to waste any time, the four hopped in the car and buckled up before heading off to Francis's house. It was going to be a wild night.
