39: Threats of a Mirror
💭💭💭
"If I should ask, what were you doing at the orphanage? I don't count you as that kind of person." I demanded while securing myself with the seatbelt in Philip's sleek car.
After we left the orphanage, he offered to drop me off at my house, I reluctantly agreed, only because I would have no other ride home if I rejected his offer.
"I've been visiting there for awhile." he replied casually.
"How long is awhile?"
His eyebrows were knitted tightly.
"Seven years."
I gasped. I could never have believed if someone else had told me this, but with this coming out from his own mouth, I definitely believed him.
"You don't seem to believe me." His eyes fixed on me for some seconds before he shifted his gaze back to the road.
"I...I believe you... it's just that..."
"I don't look like that kind of person." He completed my statement and I nodded slowly. A little smile played on his lips. I tapped my fingers on my thighs as I looked out the window.
"There are a lot of things about me that you have no idea about."
A sad smile appeared on his face, the kind of smile that the children at the orphanage possessed.
What was it that I didn't know about? Other than him being a jerk to me and others, was there another side of him I haven't seen?
"There are several sides to different people, we just don't notice because we don't want to."
"That or we just don't want to know their other sides because you know, first impression counts." I was indirectly directing my statement at him, fortunately, he didn't seem to catch on, or pretended not to.
"I know first impression matters, but don't you think it's a little bit overrated?"
I glanced at him, he had his eyes fixed on the road before us. I seized the opportunity to study his perfectly structured face.
What's so overrated about first impression?
My phone beeped, rescuing me from an avalanche of thoughts.
Tamara

Hey sis, where are you? I just got home now.
📤📤📤
I went somewhere..
📥📥📥
😈😈 With our dear boyfriend?
Did I forget to mention that I hadn't told Tamara about my break up with Peter, though it wasn't official, but the break up took place internally. She would freak out, not to talk about when I tell her I caught him kissing someone else who happens to be his brother's girlfriend, she'll go gaga.
📤📤📤
No, not with him...
📥📥📥
😠😠Don't tell me that you're cheating on him already!
I sighed and Philip gave me a look.
📤📤📤
😑There's no way that'll happen.
📥📥📥
If you say so, by the way, while you're at it, stop by the Mart and get me some toiletries, I forgot my supplies were exhausted... Please..
I rolled my eyes.
📤📤📤
Fine, so long as you keep your hands away from mine.
📥📥📥
Oops, I already touched yours , I'm just heading out of your room... BTW, Michael and I agreed that our wedding will take place as soon as mom's discharged from the hospital... Preparations will begin next week, and you my dear baby sister, will help me... Catch you later.
And, she went off, just like that.
"That was my sister." I spoke, in order to satisfy the curiosity built up on his face. His shoulders relaxed and I wondered why they were initially rigid. Maybe I was just imagining things.
"Oh, how's she doing?"
"She's OK, troublesome as always."
He smiled, that smile which everything managed to stop my heart's business for a few seconds.
"Just like Peter, he's always been like a pest."
I grimaced at the mention of Peter's name. My facial expression didn't escape Philip's scrutiny.
"I haven't seen the both of you in awhile."
Yeah, because he's been busy with your girlfriend. The sneaky bastard.
"I...I...uh...I." I stammered and pursed my lips, keeping my eyes fixed on my thighs.
"It's okay, you don't need to tell me anything. " He replied calmly and we drove in silence till we got to the intersection that led to my house. He was about manoeuvring the car in the designated direction.
"I'll stop here, I need to get a few things from the Mart." I spoke, tucking my phone into my pocket. He changed the car's direction and drove towards the Mart.
We got out of the car at the same time and I made for the entrance. I noticed Philip walking briskly towards me so I halted and faced him.
"You needn't come along, I'm fine."
He shook his head and grabbed my hand, pulling me towards the entrance. He let go of my hand once he had opened the glass door.
I stared at the numerous shelves in front of me. I sighed and marched towards the shelf for toiletries ignoring the stares thrown at us by the other customers.
"How did you know the exact shelf for what you needed?" Philip asked as I threw some bars of soap into the trolley beside me.
"Years of practice." I mumbled, reaching out to a toilet roll above my head, I stood on my toes, but I couldn't get to it. I jumped slightly, but it made no difference.
Philip snickered from beside me, I ignored him and huffed in frustration, still reaching out to the illusive toilet roll.
I felt his presence behind me, his chest was pressed against my back which made me feel fuzzy, he stretched his arm above my head and grabbed the toilet roll with ease. He lowered his arm and dumped it into the trolley.
I acted like I felt nothing and busied myself with fishing out the other items I needed. I noticed Philip's eyes were no longer on me, his eyes were fixed on the shelf a couple of feet away, no, not on the shelf, but on Peter and Maya! who were at 'work'. By work I mean playing tonsil hockey.
Can someone please tell me why I keep running into the two of them?
I saw the sides of his mouth twitch, his fists clenched, and a frown creased his forehead.
He closed his eyes and opened them again, probably trying to contain his anger.
When his eyes finally opened and planted themselves on me, I heaved.
I expected him to confront his brother or something, but he didn't. He waited patiently till I was done with dumping different items into the trolley. He followed me to the cashier and before I could teach for my credit card, he got to his and paid for the items. The cashier gaped at him and he gave her one of his enchanting smiles.
Before the others could reach out to their cellphones to take pictures, he grabbed the bags and pulled me gently out of the Mart.
"Let's get you home." He held the door open for me and I climbed in. He placed the shopping bags on the back seat and slammed the door shut.
"Aren't you going to talk about what happened back there?" I demanded when he started the car.
"No, there's nothing to talk about."
I looked out through the window, imagining what could possibly be going through his mind.
He drove me home in silence and drove off when I stepped out with my shopping bags, not even sparing me a 'goodbye' or something. I feared what he'd do to Peter or Maya.
I had no energy left within me to think about Peter or Maya, the two of them were seriously crazy.
When I got into the house, I handed the items to Tamara who was watching a movie with Michael. She thanked me profusely and later, Michael exchanged a few words with me, enquiring about my well-being.
After eating, I headed to my room while they continued their movie.
I flipped the light switch and the light from above my head illuminated the entire room. I headed to my dresser and froze when I saw some words scrawled on the mirror.
YOU ARE NEXT, WE'RE COMING FOR YOU.
OMG! I'm so scared to death...
Who on earth has done this? And how did they get into her room?
How did this chapter go?
