'Threats of A Coward'

PHILIP LEFT in the same manner as he came; abruptly. I shrugged and continued watching the workers working on the different fabrics laid out on large tables before them.

After a long day, I closed from work at exactly 9:30p.m. I got stuck in traffic as I drove home, but despite that, I arrived home at exactly 10:30p.m with a terrible headache. While I fumbled with my keys after I stepped out of the car, I didn't know someone approached me until a hand was placed over my mouth, and another hand around my waist.

"We're coming for you..." A voice whispered in my ear causing me to shiver as they sent signals of intense hatred into my body.

"Let go of me, you...mmmph... coward!" The sounds emitted from my larynx were muffled as a result of the assaulter's hand clipped over my mouth. Twisting my body around, I was unsuccessful in liberating myself from his firm grip.

I bit deep into his palm over my mouth and he yelled, withdrawing it rapidly from over my mouth. While he was distracted by the pain, I raised my foot and swung it backwards, attacking his shin. Swear words rapidly escaped from his mouth as his hand draped around my waist was removed and used to support his leg.

"You'll pay for this, I promise you, you b**ch," He cursed and limped away.

I internally rejoiced for warding off his evil intentions. Strangely, his rough, calloused hands were familiar when they touched my skin, the voice, even though in whispers was also familiar, but I couldn't really tell who they belonged to.

I traveled back from my thoughts to reality when the front door was open cautiously.

Tamara poked her head out first and glanced sideward, first to the right and then to the left. She grabbed my arm and pulled me into the house.

"What was that? I heard a noise."

I ignored her statement and picked my way to the kitchen. I turned on the light and sighed.

"Florence." She called  sternly.

"There was nothing, I assure you." I lied again to leave no room for doubt, but she wasn't satisfied.

I didn't want to tell her about my encounter with the stupid coward, because she might react terribly to the information. Seeing she recently recovered from an emotional breakdown. Telling her would just add fuel to the already raging fire.

I huffed and grabbed a glass cup and drank water from the water dispenser.

"There was nothing." I laid emphasis on each syllable.

My sister gave me an odd look."If you say so. I went to the hospital, Doctor Michelle said mom's recovering rapidly and will soon be discharged, but even at that, she shouldn't be allowed to do any strenuous activity."

I nodded and listened to her talk about her day at the office. She asked about mine and I gave her a positive reply. When it was bedtime, I made sure all the doors and windows were securely locked before heading upstairs to my room.

In my bed, I couldn't sleep because every little sound startled me,  I even imagined a man clutching a huge stick next to my bed. Even the mere sound of the tree branches grazing the roof top awoke me.

💭💭💭

It's been a long day, without you my friend...

'See you again', my ringtone played on my phone, luring me from my troubled sleep. I yawned and tucked my head under my pillow.

My phone rang persistently, making me withdraw my head from under my pillow. I glared at the phone which was fully aware of my interrupted sleep. I had planned on sleeping in as the week has been too hectic for me, but my phone and whoever was calling had just shattered my plans.

Alright enough complaining, answer your call!

I flipped over and placed my phone on my ear without checking the caller ID. The stupid phone continued ringing, then I realized that I was actually the stupid one because I hadn't tapped on the answer button.

I hope whoever it is is worth my troubles this morning.

"Hello,  Angel."

Definitely not worth it.

Angel my foot. The unmistakable voice of the two-faced man I had once called my boyfriend resounded into my ear, it no longer had the effect it once had on me, instead, I found it repulsive.

"Yeah, good morning."  I resolved to maintain my composure and find out what he's playing at. Maybe he wants to confess.

"I made a promise that we'll talk when..."

"Oh, yeah I know." I cut short his statement trying hard to keep down my rising anger.

He has the audacity to call me after he's gone around playing tonsil hockey with his brother's girlfriend. An unmistakable emotion that spoke of hatred found it's way into my heart.

"You know I love you right?"  My intestines twisted unpleasantly as I listened to those words, the lies which rolled out of his mouth with ease.

"I know you love me..." My fist clenched on the bed as scenes from that 'day' replayed in my mind.

With every single word he uttered, I was inclined towards smashing my phone to pieces, but I restrained myself.

I listened to the bitter sweet words he spoke, I couldn't imagine anyone as deceitful as him. Cheating on me right before my eyes and wickedly stating his 'love' for me. That's really terrible, it's cruel. It's just like you sticking a knife in my chest and telling me that you love me, how on earth would I believe that? Fed up with his carefully selected lies, I hung up and tossed my phone away from me.

Sighing, I realized that I needed to destroy all the thoughts running through my head, I desperately needed to eliminate them. I hurried out of my bed and moved to the bathroom.

After wearing a pair of jeans trousers and a tank top, I combed my hair gently and packed it up in a Grecian bun, satisfied with my appearance, I picked up my phone and headed downstairs where I ate breakfast.  Tamara had mysteriously disappeared, I guessed she went out with Michael as she told me she  would.

After stuffing my stomach with food, I headed to the Orphanage located a couple of miles away from home.

Me, mom, Tamara and my 'dad' occasionally paid visits to the orphanage when I was much younger, my mom would bring along some clothes while my dad would buy toys for them, I and Tam would play with the kids there who always wore sad smiles on their faces. I always wondered what it was like to have no parents, or abandoned by them.

After the 'disaster'(you know what I mean), we entirely stopped visiting the orphanage because of the memories we had there, we stopped going not only to the orphanage, but every other place we've been to as a family, including the park. That was why when Peter brought me to the park, tears flowed from my eyes, I hadn't been there in a long time.

I stopped a taxi and gave the cabman my destination. He drove, bobbing his head up and down to soft music playing in the car. I subconsciously joined him in his 'act' while I gazed out of the window and watched everything going on outside the cab.

The road leading to the Orphanage gradually became bereft of human activity and all I could see was large fields playing around us.

When we arrived at the Orphanage, I paid the driver, after he had grunted in disapproval of what I had no slight idea about, he drove off.

I placed my feet carefully on the steps that led to the orphanage located in the midst of carefully tended flowers and tress. I noticed the children playing with differently coloured objects, some of them were building sand castles, others played pretend-to-be Kings and Queens.

Ah, finally, it's out... I intended for this chapter to be about 1700 words long, but knowing myself, I hate lengthy chapters.

Due to my numerous assignments in school(😞), I'll adjust my updating schedule. I'll update mainly on Tuesdays and Fridays.  I'm sorry guys, but school calls...
