30: High expectations

RELUCTANTLY, I DIALED Peter's number and after a few beeps, he answered.

"Hey Angel" He said in his usual manner. A small smile appeared on my lips. I heard shuffling in the background.

"Hey"

"Missing me already?" He teased and I rolled my eyes.

"You wish," I scoffed.

"So what's wrong?" He asked and my throat instantly became dry. I didn't know how he'll take the news of my leaving to London. I was frightened of what he'll say in return. But then, Peter's an understanding man, he'll understand.

"Hello, Angel, are you still there?" He asked and I shook my head free of my thoughts.

"Um...yes" I twiddled my fingers nervously and bit my lips, something I did only when I felt uneasy.

"What's going on?"

"I'm going away to London, I'll be there for awhile." I closed my eyes expecting to hear a crash but I didn't. All I got was silence.

"Hello?" I brought my phone to my face to check if he hung up, but he hadn't. The next thing I heard was a beep signifying that he hung up on me.

I paced around my room, still not believing that Peter hung up on me.

I expected him to understand just like I always did when he suspended some of our dates for work. What pained me most was that he didn't try to find out why I'm leaving to London, I expected better from him, but then, expecting so much from people always hurt.

Sighing, I commenced packing my things as my flight was in two days.

"So you're seriously leaving?" Alice asked with sadness filling her face.

I had called her to tell her about my trip to London and she said she needed to see me in person, so I asked her to meet me here.

"It's not going to be for forever, I'll come back," I replied and looked around the coffee shop to see if I could recognize anyone.

"Still, Five months is such a long time," she cried and placed her head on the table. I reached out to pat her back, but she raised her head before I could do that.

"Have you told Peter?" Her eyes burned into me. I merely pursed my lips in response and she raised her brow questioningly.

"Why haven't you told him?"

"I called him earlier to tell him, guess what he did?"

"What did he do?"

"He hung up on me."

Alice's eyes widened in utter shock. When the shock in her eyes vanished, she twisted her lips in displeasure.

"Why would he do that?"

I shrugged. She lowered her gaze to the empty coffee cup before her and immersed herself in her thoughts for a while before speaking up.

"Where's your phone?"

Before I could reply, she snatched my phone from my bag. She typed furiously on my phone and I assumed she was trying to call Peter. My assumption was right when she gently placed my phone on the table and motioned me to be silent.

I peered into the phone and saw that Peter's face was on my screen alongside his name and number.

"Hey, this is Peter, you know what to do, leave a message."

His voice which I had already started to miss, spoke up indicating that my call has been ignored.

What can I possibly do?

💭💭💭

"I'm gonna miss you Mom," I hugged my mom, allowing tears course down my cheeks.

Presently, we're at the airport, by we I mean me, my mom, Tamara and Alice, and they're all emotional, hugging me like this would be the last time they'll ever see me.

Tamara cried on my shoulder and stepped aside later to wipe her teary eyes and to blow her nose with a handkerchief she brought along with her; seems she came prepared.

Alice said she'll miss me and my mom managed to maintain her composure, but inwardly I knew how she truly felt.

After our little emotional moment, I finally got aboard the plane headed to London.

I looked down at the papers in my hand, which included my admission letter from the Fashion Management School, and the other paper was a form for my accommodation whilst attending the school, I imagined how it would be like.

My thoughts switched from thoughts of London to thoughts of Peter. I wondered how he was doing, I missed him already, but sadly, I wasn't sure if he missed me too. Although his behavior over the phone shocked me, my mom would always say 'Never expect so much from people, they might not live up to your expectations at some point'

And I agreed very strongly with her. Getting a hold of my thoughts, I looked around me and observed the people seated around me. I hadn't taken notice of anyone or even the stranger seated beside me, because I was swimming in my thoughts.

The stranger beside me was holding a book in his hands, and from the way his eyebrows are furrowed, I concluded that he was lost in whatever the book held.

Sighing, I leaned farther into the seat and stretched my legs before me. Allowing the calmness of my environment capture me, I fell asleep.

Don't hate me people, but I had to do what I did in order for the story to proceed as planned. Maybe I'll do an alternate ending, that'll be at the end of this book. Until then, sit back and enjoy....
