'Let's Celebrate'
6:00a.m
"Florence, wake up or you'll be late!" My sister Tamara yelled, barging into my room. I groaned and turned to the other side of my bed, relishing the comfort of my furry pillow and white blanket.
"Canon ball!" She jumped on me causing me to wince in pain. For a moment, I feared I might need to make an appointment with a doctor.
"Get off me you freak!" I grunted and pushed her full weight off my body.
Tamara and I are not a bunch of crazy teenage girls, in case you're wondering. That's the way our sisterly bond was fortified. Since we were kids, we were always pulling absurd pranks on each other so I guess we got accustomed to it.
The consistently renewed bond between us is so tight that I greatly doubt that anything would come between us.
We're quite fortunate you know, because from what I've heard and seen, having siblings could be quite stressful. They could be so annoying. Although, my sister annoyed me some times by taking my stuff without telling me, she was still the best sister I could ask for.
Our dad's out of the picture. He divorced my mom a couple years back after cheating on her with her younger sister.
Ridiculous right?
But things like that happen in real life, life's not a fairytale where everything's perfect. It's not a Cinderella-meets-her-Prince-and-they-lived-happily-ever-after story, wake up, this is reality, reality sucks but you must accept the truth.
He went ahead and got married to her younger sister and then whisked her off to Canada leaving our mom who was torn apart emotionally.
As kids we were also devastated by the abrupt exit of dad, our lives became bleak, miserable, dismal, dull, add whatever adjective you want, it won't still describe how badly our lives were ruined.
Mom seeing the precipice that we were at risk of falling from, picked up the shards of her shattered life and glued them back. She built us up into resilient young women that would be capable of handling the Test of Time, whenever it comes knocking.
Presently, she runs a string of fashion stores and I wouldn't be wrong to say that we lived comfortably without dad. We were fine without him.
My sister worked in a law firm even before she finished her Masters degree in law a couple of months ago.
Let's get back to the present, shall we?
I recently bagged a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from the Mississippi State University and barely four months after, I became uncomfortable with staying at home unoccupied. Hence the big 'job hunt'.
I carefully scrubbed my body under the shower, letting the water glide down my body in intervals.
Satisfied with my hygiene, I stepped out of the bathroom to pick my outfit which my dear sister had already taken care of.
"Come over here and sit." She ordered, indicating the chair at my dresser.
Bossy.
After satisfactorily rolling my eyes and marching to the dresser, she forcefully shoved me into a chair, making a grunt escape my lips.
I winced as she began combing my long black hair without mercy.
"Ouch! Tam, you're gonna pull out my scalp." I protested and supported my head with my left hand. She slapped it away and continued pulling my hair.
"Stop being dramatic, your hair's just fine." She chided, patting my head for emphasis.
For once I wished I had remembered to lock my door before sleeping. But then, despite the countless reminders I set, I always forget to do that.
"I've picked out your dress, go try it out."
She dumped the comb, pushed me out of the chair and shoved a corporate attire into my arms.
A dressing session with Tamara was equivalent to working out in a gym.
Scoffing, I held the dress in front of my frame and stood before the mirror.
"It's too corporate." I whined and shot her a beseeching glance which she ignored.
Tamara stamped her foot impatiently and I sighed before putting on the gown.
I stared at my reflection in the mirror and was stunned at the lady I saw there blinking back at herself.
The gown totally enhanced my figure and made me look like a lady on a mission.
When my sister's 'job' on my body was done, she pushed me out of the house and into a cab she had called.
"Bye sis, catch you later." I waved at her and she waved back as the cab man drove away.
I checked on the credentials I had tucked away in a file to be certain that none had been tampered with.
We drove in silence till we arrived at Nicholas Corporation.
I stared at the beautiful skyscraper as I stepped out of the cab after ensuring I had left nothing behind.
My sister had already paid my transport fare so the cabman sped off.
Stepping in through the glass sliding doors, I take notice of how organized everything is in here. Surprisingly, I didn't see security men at the entrance.
Looking up, I figured out why. Peering down at me were several security cameras.
How welcoming.
I adjusted my gown before walking up to a receptionist who guided me to a conference room that was unoccupied, and asked me to wait there.
Still standing, I studied the large slace and noticed how it was tastefully furnished. Whoever designed this place did a great job. Plus the view of the city from up here was breath-taking.
A man walked in through the door, making me snap out of my drooling over the landscape.
I suppressed the urge to roll my eyes when I noticed his predictable attire; a grey suit, a matching pair of shoes and a tie.
My dislike for dressing corporately was so strong. It made me feel imprisoned and at times I wished I could forfeit my meal for a day in exchange for a day without corporate dresses.
I wouldn't be in these pump heels and this stupid gown if Tamara had not forced them on me.
"You must be Miss Florence Steel."
He locked his eyes with mine for a few seconds and I averted my gaze, not being able to handle his intense stare which was entirely innocent.
"Yes, I am." I replied and he nodded and offered me a seat which I took gladly.
"From your resumé and the other documents, you appear to be a lady with a charming personality." He sat in the seat opposite mine and fixed his eyes on me.
"My brother's in a meeting, so he asked me to interview you on his behalf." He continued and leaned towards me.
Wait, so he's not the owner of Nicholas corporation and I'm drooling already...
I listened to his lecture on things expected from me as a personal assistant to his brother. I would stand in the role of his schedule manager, personal accountant and other stuff.
Not stuff like stuff, you know.
"I'll see you tomorrow Miss Steel and hopefully, my brother will." He said, leading me to the door and to an elevator which I wished the receptionist had shown me earlier instead of making me climb a flight of stairs.
Why didn't she?
"I'd like to be addressed as Florence, sir."
I disliked my last name, because it belongs to my father and I hate being reminded of him.
Why mum insisted we keep our last names is a mystery to me.
"That's duly noted, I'm Peter Ross, call me Peter." He replied smiling warmly. I nodded and flashed him a smile before stepping into the elevator. As the elevator's door closed slowly, he spun round and walked away.

When I got home, Tamara was seated on the porch reading a fashion magazine. When she saw me, she flung the magazine away and scurried towards me. She didn't go to work today because, she asked for permission to be away because she wasn't feeling too good. But her random bursts of energy made me doubt her being ill.
I braced myself for the 'hug of the century'.
She hugged me forcefully and I almost fell to the ground.
"How did it go?"
"I got the job." I mumbled, pulling the pair of heels off my feet.
She jumped in ecstasy and dragged me into the house. She pulled out a bottle of champagne from the tiny bar that stood at a corner.
I groaned as she shouted. "Let's celebrate!"
"Party freak." I mummured.
