Cactus (Part 4/5)

Oh shoot, I shouldn't have said that, Succulentus thought.
Shoot, thought Fern, I should've been more thoughtful.
Minutes passed. Neither had the courage to say anything.
Succulentus had to do something. He couldn't just stand there. He was the one who snapped back at Fern, "Uh, do you wanna learnhowtowalk..?"
"Wha.. Huh.. Sure..."
"Uh, so first you.. Uh.."
"Uh... What?"
"Um... A-about earlier, sorry for yelling at you..."
"Sorry for being nosy.."
"I know."
"Oh."
"Fern, I'm not mad at you."
"But I was the nosy one."
"I kn- I didn't mean to yell at you."
"I know."
Fern and Succulentus knew they had both made a mistake. It was an awkward situation.
"So.. Do you wanna walk?" Succulentus asked.
"Okay."
"Um.. The power comes from your roots."
Fern tried to wiggle the tips of her roots. "Woah, this feels weird. I don't think I've ever moved my roots before.."
"Right, so then you need to push against the solid ground."
Fern tried to push against the dirt. Nothing happened.
"Focus on your roots. The root of your strength comes from your roots."
Fern wiggled the roots around. Nothing happened still.
"You need to move the roots one by one. Bend the middle so that the top part is parallel to the ground, then put the bottom part on the ground perpendicular from where it is right now."
It took a while for Fern to process everything.
"Riiight, so if you wanna move all your roots at once, you have to go in a sweeping motion."
It took a while for Fern to get used to moving her roots around, "This feels so strange. I don't think I should be doing this. I'm a plant."
Then, Fern finally felt the dirt being pushed out of her way, "Oh my," Fern leaned over and started inching forward, "How?"
Succulentus was amused, "It worked! Good job Fern!"
"I can't believe it! I did it! I didn't even know plants could walk! Thank you much Succulentus!"
Succulentus giggled. This was the first time he saw another plant walk. It was an amazing sight. "Well, let's get going," he reminded Fern.
"Right."
     Succulentus and Fern started walking.
Fern looked back. She knew she would miss her home, but if Succulentus wanted to explore the world, Fern could do it too.
Fern was still slowly inching towards Succulentus as they walked. She still didn't get the hang of walking yet. Her roots were moving in uneven amounts, and she struggled to push away the dirt.
"Here," said Succulentus, "Why don't we use the path I came in from?"
     Fern agreed, "Good idea."
     They both kept walking.
Fern started walking faster and faster.
Succulentus noticed, "Good pace, keep it up!"
After what seemed to be hours, Succulentus could feel the hot sun that glinted in bright rays where his home used to be. He took a moment to soak it all in. "We're almost there," Succulentus told Fern.
Fern looked around, "But.. I don't see anything..."
Succulentus was too excited. He walked faster and faster.
Fern tried to keep up, "Succulentus, wait! What's going on?"
"HHHHHHHHHH," Succulentus had never felt so relieved in his life. He could feel the familiar coarse, yellow ground beneath him. He could see the bright, yellow sun shining in his direction. He could see mounds of sand that arched up and down.
     "We're here!"
